Is seeing the new "The Color Purple" film on your Winter break to-do list? 💜

If so, you should know that Rose Library holds the papers of the novel's author, Alice Walker! Walker is a key figure in the major exhibition, "At the Crossroads with Benny Andrews, Flannery O'Connor and Alice Walker", now open on the 3rd floor of Woodruff Library. When you visit, you will be able to view the original, handwritten manuscript of "The Color Purple", as well as other items from Alice Walker's life and career. Learn more here: https://buff.ly/3RZ3zYJ

While not in the exhibit, you can also view the original script of the 1985 film, written by Alice Walker (which went unused), as well as props and photographs in our Reading Room.

Campus isn't the same without our students! 😴 Before we know it, though, the spring semester will be here and in full swing. We look forward to having even more students up in Rose Library, experiencing the magic of discovery.

One group that visited during the Fall semester was led by Kimber Clark, Assistant Director of College Advising, and Rebecca Rego, Associate Director of Advising. The pair brought new transfer students to Rose Library to learn about Emory's illustrious history. These students viewed items from Emory's past, including a Dooley suit, photographs, and campus publications.

Monday, Dec. 18, 2023 marks the 164th anniversary of Emory alumnus Young John Allen’s sail from New York to China (1859). Allen, a missionary who graduated from Emory College in 1858, published a small church magazine that grew into a national publication on history, politics, and other vital topics in China. He also translated Western publications into Chinese, which encouraged modern ideas about governing and society.

Significantly, he established schools to educate younger generations on modern ideologies such as democracy, equality, liberal arts and sciences. He became a supporter of women’s rights in China, strongly advocating against foot-binding and for educating women, even opening an all-girls school.

Emory’s Rose Library has a collection of Young John Allen materials, including personal papers, photographs, correspondence, diaries, and other items.

Happy last day of finals to our Emory undergraduates! 🥳 We have loved having our students in Rose Library this semester.

One of the classes we hosted was ARTVIS 120: Intro to Visual Art. Since students from this introduction to graphic design course would be making zines of their own towards the end of the semester, they viewed many zines and artist books in Rose. These items centered around DIY culture, music, social activism, q***r education. Specific materials explored during the session included "The ABCs of Beauty" and "The Unmaking and the Making of the World".

If you're lucky enough to find yourself in Palm Springs, California between now and April 8, 2024, you have to stop by the Palm Springs Art Museum to see their current exhibition - "Kali, Artographer, 1932-2019".

Kali Archibald was a housewife in Long Island until 1962, when she shed her old life and her old name (Joan) to become a photographer in Southern California. Her beautiful art mixes classic photography with experimental elementals, which she called "artography". Rose Library is fortunate enough to hold the papers of Kali, including hundreds of slides of her art, as well as polaroids, journals, and letters. Emory celebrates 50 years of ‘The Wiz’ with Rose Library collection opening | Emory University | Atlanta GA 12/01/2023

“It’s so neat to have the opportunity to see these artifacts in Atlanta,” said Goheen. “I love seeing original manuscripts and original artifacts. It takes me back and makes me realize, ‘[The Wiz] is great today, but the impact is just so much more than if it were just a nice musical.’”

The Emory News Center wrote a wonderful article about our celebration of the Holder-de Lavallade collection! Check it out now:

Emory celebrates 50 years of ‘The Wiz’ with Rose Library collection opening | Emory University | Atlanta GA To mark the 50th anniversary of the inaugural run of “The Wiz,” Emory students, faculty and staff gathered at the Rose Library to browse the papers of Geoffrey Holder, the show’s original director and costume designer.

Thank you to everyone who came out last month to celebrate the opening of our new exhibit, "At the Crossroads with Benny Andrews, Flannery O’Connor, and Alice Walker". This exhibit, located on the 3rd floor of Woodruff Library, is the result of years of hard work from curators, exhibitions team, event planner, preservation department, student assistants, and more. We hope that you'll stop by between now and May 18, 2024 to see it!

Did you eat your Wheaties today? If you haven’t, you might not want to try these.

Recently, a researcher stumbled upon a completely unopened box of Wheaties that expired in October 2002. We couldn’t let this opportunity go to waste, and decided to unbox them and compare them to a new box from 2023. Our Reading Room Manager Rachel did the honors.

Here are some of our observations:
⚾ The ingredients have changed in the last 21 years! The 2002 Wheaties have more ingredients, while the newer ones have only five ingredients total. The nutrition facts label looks very different, and current Wheaties are about 20 more calories a cup than the 2002 kind.

⚾ In terms of smell, we didn’t smell much of a difference between the two. The actual cereal itself looked only a little different in color, but was the same in texture!

⚾ This box of Wheaties is older than most of our current, traditional undergraduate students. For context, our current senior class were born around 2002.

After we had our fun, Rachel put the 2002 cereal in the compost bin. The box was flattened and put back into the collection it was found in, which is related to African American sports history.

To commemorate nearly 50 years of “The Wiz” on Broadway and the 50th anniversary of hip-hop, Rose Library and the Pathways Center recently hosted a private show-and-tell of items from the Geoffrey Holder and Carmen de Lavallade Papers. Holder was the Tony Award-winning director and costume designer of the original Broadway musical "The Wiz." Holder’s papers, along with those of his wife, acclaimed dancer and choreographer Carmen de Lavallade, were placed at Rose Library in 2018.

During their visit, guests explored a display of their materials, including letters of support, photographs, original programs, and gallery images, along with Holder's storyboards and portfolios of set designs and costume drawings for “The Wiz.” They also heard from Rose Library's Anicka Austin, who processed this stunning collection. Thanks to her hard work, the Geoffrey Holder and Carmen de Lavallade Papers are open to the public.

The Woodruff Library Building will be closed tomorrow, Tuesday, Nov. 28th from 3am to 4:30pm for the memorial for First Lady Rosalynn Carter hosted on the Emory University campus.

Rosalynn Carter was not only a friend of Emory’s, but a trailblazer in mental health awareness, housing, and women’s rights. We echo the sentiments of Emory’s President Gregory Fenves on the loss of this incredible leader.

"Yun Ch'i-ho was from Korea, but he actually didn't come directly from Korea; he actually came via China. And he came to Emory precisely because there was a missionary school in China run by an Emory alum named Young J. Allen. Allen recognized Yun as a very promising student, so he was able to fundraise to support his education in the United States. Initially he goes to Vanderbilt, and then he transfers to Emory and graduates in 1893." - Chris Suh, assistant professor of history, during the Emory College’s "First Fridays" series lecture, November 2023

We are thrilled to announce that Yun Ch'i-ho's papers are now available to view online! https://buff.ly/3sts6Lt

This is especially exciting due to the fragile nature of his original diaries, which are not able to be viewed in person for that reason. Work on this digitization project was enabled by an endowment and an agreement with Yun Ch’i-ho’s nephew, Ted Chung.
