Dr. Pellom McDaniels III was a renowned athlete, a scholar, author, poet, professor and the curator of the African American collections at Emory’s Rose Library before he passed away in April 2020. Among all these talents and pursuits, he was also an artist.
Now his artwork will be exhibited at the African Diaspora Art Museum of Atlanta (ADAMA). This exhibition, “A Shield Against Darkness: The Art and Scholarship of Pellom McDaniels III,” focuses on McDaniels as an artist and showcases work he produced over decades. The pieces featured grapple with themes of memory, race, US neocolonialism, and spirituality. The exhibit was curated by Dr. Clint Fluker, senior director of culture, community and partner engagement for the Carlos Museum and Emory Libraries; and Dr. Fahamu Pecou, artist and ADAMA founder.
Exhibit opening:
Friday, May 10, 7-9 p.m. (exhibit runs through June 28, 2024)
Location: ADAMA, inside the Nia Building at Pittsburgh Yards, 352 University Ave, Atlanta GA 30310

On Jan. 1, 2024, thousands of copyrighted works from 1928 entered the public domain in the United States, along with sound recordings from 1923. Works in the public domain are free for all to copy, share, and build upon.
Among this year’s highlights are works that showcase cultural struggles of the early 20th century, many of which seem decidedly relevant today: there are books that were banned for obscenity (“Lady Chatterley’s Lover”), a critique of the inhumanity of capitalist society (“The Threepenny Opera”), a feminist classic exploring gender fluidity and sexuality (Virginia Woolf’s “Orlando”), and the first novel by a Black author to reach the New York Times bestseller list (Claude McKay’s “Home to Harlem”).
Films that entered the public domain this month include some of the last silent pictures as well as the first “all-talking” picture. Perhaps the most anticipated entry into the public domain is Walt Disney’s short animated film “Steamboat Willie,” featuring Mickey and Minnie Mouse.
For more details, read our annual post by John Morgenstern of our Scholarly Communications Office, adapted and customized from the blog by the Center for the Study of the Public Domain, Duke University School of Law. Emory University is honored to receive an ORCID US Community Award for Outstanding Outreach Effort for our campaign last fall that encouraged Emory researchers to sign up for an ORCID ID. Emory's promotional efforts, led by Jody Bailey of the Scholarly Communications Office, entailed collaboration among Emory Libraries, the Provost’s Office, Office of Information Technology, Research Administration, and the Emory Center for Digital Scholarship.
The team created faculty testimonial videos, flyers, digital signage, postcards, and other assets distributed across campus, and worked with university publications to highlight ORCID in various newsletters.
