We have an amazing award that is given out each year to the top performing schools for State Science Day. Recently, I have had the opportunity to catch up with the daughter of Harold Shaw, whom the award is named after. Thank you Gwen Sailer for these amazing images and the legacy your father bestowed on generations of Ohio's STEM innovators.
Here is the story from Gwen to explain the images:
My dad Harold Shaw taught all the science and math classes in our small high school, so during my junior and senior years, he was my teacher fully half a day. Of course, the science project was required every year, and the assignments related to the project began, as I remember, the first week of school when he required that we design our “name card.”
My undergraduate degree is from Miami University nearly fully funded (tuition was only $550/semester then) from a science scholarship because of my success with science projects. I was an educator my entire working life, retiring as Vice President of Student Services at Bates Technical College, Tacoma, Washington.
I unite occasionally with many of my childhood friends, and for those of us who can still remember, we always enjoy a groan about those required science projects and the knowledge and discipline they brought to our lives. My dad worked tirelessly to provide as much science and technology for his students as possible with the meager resources of a small community. He built the lab, Bunsen burners and all, in which we learned. I have appreciated his commitment so much more with the perspective and wisdom of age. He died much too young at the age of 77 in 1993 from leukemia. The attached pictures of me in 1961. I also attached one of my mother, Wilma Shaw. She visited State Science Day several times in the late 90s/early 200s. She passed in 2014. The other images are from 2018 when my sister Carolyn Lowry and I came in from Washington, and joined Lisa Eilerman, our cousin, who is the daughter of Elwood Shaw, daddy's brother, who also judged at State Science Day for many years.
Congratulations to the students from Tipp City Schools. Thank you to the Tipp City Rotary Club for supporting these students in their STEM endeavors! Students shown with recently inducted Ohio Academy of Science Board President, Dr. Martin English.
It's Teacher Appreciation Week and Ohio In-Demand Jobs Week. Thank you to Ohio's educators for preparing our future leaders in STEM and those that will fill critical openings in Ohio's workforce. In-Demand Jobs Week is the statewide celebration of the jobs, industries, and skills that are in-demand in Ohio. Community leaders statewide are encouraged to partner in planning events and engaging activities that will inspire excitement and awareness among students and job seekers. The theme for In-Demand Jobs Week 2024 is "Ohio, The Heart of Opportunity." This is a great opportunity to connect your students with their potential future endeavors!
