Johns Creek Public Works is participating in Georgia 811 Day (today, Aug. 11), reminding our community to call 811 before digging!
Georgia 811, a non-profit organization, aims to keep communities safe by preventing damage to underground utilities and enhancing public safety by connecting utility companies with those planning mechanized digging activities.
Why Call 811?
• While you don’t have to notify Georgia 811 for smaller, non-mechanized projects, it’s encouraged for your safety and the safety of those around you.
• Whether you’re digging with shovels or using heavy machinery, Georgia 811’s service is always free.
• Projects include: Installing fences, decks, swing sets, mailboxes, planting trees, and more!
📞 How It Works:
1. Call 811 before you dig.
2. Georgia 811 notifies the utility companies.
3. Professional locators mark underground lines at your site.
4. Dig safely around the marked lines.
By calling 811, you can help protect utilities and ensure the safety our community.

Each year, the underground utility infrastructure in Georgia is severely damaged due to digging without first locating underground lines, resulting in service interruptions, environmental damage, and threats to public safety.
In 2005, the Federal Communications Commission designated the phone number 811 to provide contractors and homeowners with a free and simple way to contact utility operators to request the location of underground lines at intended dig sites.
The Board of Commissioners is pleased to recognize Sunday, August 11, 2024, as Douglas County 811 Day and encourages contractors and homeowners throughout Douglas County to always call 811 before digging!

As summer projects continue, you may see more paint on the ground. Paint on the ground is an indicator that someone is digging nearby and called in a Dig Ticket as required before digging. Each paint color (flag) has a special meaning to those digging and represents the type of utility facility in the ground or that proposed work is being done (white paint).
Projects you may see in your neighborhood after the paint shows up include (but are not limited to) updates to landscaping, fencing, mailboxes and work being done by utility installers. Utility installation in subdivisions can be new services offered or often times, utilities are upgrading the lines to enhance services.
