Glad to get to the NCMA on the last day of Phil’s exhibit, to introduce my daughter to great works he enabled, and to recall the joy of collaborating with him on his house.
The Tudor garage is coming along!
Humidity has finally broken and I’m back to going into my office, which is .7 miles from home. I took the windy 16-mile route though!
The interior of this garage is sculptural, as I hoped!
Art Howard's awesome photos of the Havener Residence are done, so it was time to rebuild my website (still need to add metadata/credits): www.blokarchitecture.com
Pandemic is over! Late night cleaning so I can return to office tomorrow. First meeting here on Wednesday in 1 year 3 months!!!!
The garage now has a concrete floor, which helped reduce the scale inside (it's still pleasantly cavernous). The exterior, however, is deceptively "small" and fits right into the neighborhood.
And a few more images of the Havener Residence during my recent recon:
Visited the Havener Residence on Friday for the first time since it was completed.
The garage that's like a house is progressing nicely!
No work this afternoon because this happened....
It's been a very long time since I've posted, but I was happy to see a very generous garage/studio/rec room building taking shape. I worked hard to match the existing house and break down the exterior scale of what's actually a sizeable building.
Got my photos of the Raleigh screened porch yesterday. Thanks for capturing great images!
Photographing a screened porch with Marilyn Peryer that I designed in Raleigh. I didn’t do CA so this is the first time I’ve seen it since I drew it!
Shutdown finally allowed me to tackle a long-standing project: turn the hallway outside my office into a gallery of past work.
The Havener Residence is so close to done I did my first punch list today.
NC mountain sunset!
My office for the next 3 days—had to make a “site visit” to the twisty mountain roads. I’m even going to “work” on the weekend!
Working from home requires a special Friday lunch: chili cheese dogs!
Slow work day = finish the brake job day!
A recent photo of the Havener Residence, with the lap pool installed.
Today I'll be on USModernist Radio LIVE ( on Instagram LIVE) with George Smart at 1 PM to discuss working with Phil Freelon to design his house. Tune in and share!
Among the benefits of working from home? Lunchtime includes proximity to a fridge with beer and a grill for hot dogs!
The current issue of Durham Magazine, just out, did a nice feature about my old house and how I helped my old neighbors/friends (who now own it) renovate it.
Durham Magazine April 2020 The Home & Garden Issue
Well, I wish I had more work to do but I cannot complain: I'm healthy, I get to drive top-down to go for a run around the golf course mid-day, and I might even drink a beer before 5!
Getting a jump on being "non-essential" (starting at 6 PM Thursday): BLOK is dark, you can fit all you need to practice architecture in one Honda Pilot, and the home environment ain't so bad!
Huh, that's funny...there's absolutely nothing on my calendar this week?!
I'm pleased to announce that efforts to "flatten" the curve have been tremendously successful already: a graph of my income is now totally flat. Who knew architecture is such an elective pursuit LOL?!
Dang, all my work is drying up and I cannot even watch some basketball?!https://www.heraldsun.com/sports/college/acc/duke/article241118991.html?
The ACC basketball tournament has been canceled due to concerns of coronavirus outbreak What felt inevitable has become a reality. The remainder of the ACC tournament has been canceled.
