Yesterday, we had the privilege of hosting the annual Duke Caregiver Community Event, in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association, Dementia Alliance of North Carolina, and the Central Pines Regional Council.
This heartwarming event brought together over 600+ family caregivers and professionals, along with more than 100 exhibitors, 60+ dedicated volunteers, over 20 inspiring speakers. Our mission was to offer support, education, and compassion to those caring for loved ones with chronic illnesses in our community.
At Duke Health, we are deeply committed to prioritizing the well-being of our community and recognize family caregivers in partners in care. We look forward to extending our reach and helping even more people in 2025.

Giselle Olivas was 8 years old when she was diagnosed with an atrial septal defect, also known as a hole in the heart. At Duke, Giselle and her family opted for a less invasive approach and she was able to return home only two days after her procedure. Back to School Weeks After Minimally Invasive Surgery for Atrial Septic Defect Giselle Olivas was 8 years old when she was diagnosed with an atrial septal defect, also known as a hole in the heart. Her parents chose Duke for her surgery. Thanks to a less-invasive surgical approach, Giselle recovered quickly and was ready for her first day of school.
Eliana Vera González was diagnosed with an acoustic neuroma, a non-cancerous skull base tumor that grows near the brain and inner ear. She learned that removing it could potentially result in permanent hearing loss. Thanks to Duke surgeons, her tumor was safely removed and her hearing is intact!
Hearing Preserved After Surgery to Remove Large Acoustic Neuroma Eliana Vera González was diagnosed with an acoustic neuroma, a non-cancerous skull base tumor. Removing it could result in permanent hearing loss. Duke surgeons used an advanced surgical technique to safely remove González’s tumor and preserve her hearing.

After surgery and radiation therapy, Strahan underwent chemotherapy at Duke Children's Hospital. Gilbert and the Duke CMER team want people with misophonia to know they’re not alone and that there’s hope. They envision a future where doctors and other clinicians provide evidence-based clinical services for people with misophonia.
