Zhouting Li, a M.S. in Accounting student has secured a full time position from Dell China, and she wants to share her experiences with us.

What career services have you received? What have you gained from those services?

I attended a global career trek where I learned the latest recruiting process information which is critical for me to be successful in the Fall recruiting season. Besides these, I did several mock interviews and resume revisions with Russel Palmer’s team which helped me a lot. They gave me a list of behavioral questions to work on and while doing interview practices with them, they gave me practical advice on the improvement of interview skills. These advice were extremely useful during job interviews.

How has networking assisted you in the recruiting process?
Before the interview, I contacted several MSU graduates who are currently working for Dell China. They shared with me their interview experience and some milestone within the organization. After each interview, I also sent out thank you notes to my interviewers. After I got the offer, HR told me that sending thank you notes left interviewers a deep great impression.

Thea Bruun, an accounting junior has received a summer intern offer from Hydro and she wants to share her experiences....

Position Type: Summer Intern in Finance, Global Process Design and Improvement
Company Name: Hydro
Location: Oslo, Norway

What career services have you received?
The Broad College provides excellent career services and resources for business students, and throughout my time at MSU I have made sure to take advantage of them! Russell Palmer’s team has assisted me with anything from resume building to cover letter writing and mock interviews. Yet, the career service that has made the greatest impact on me and my professional development was their Global Networking Series. I started attending this when I was a sophomore and it prepared me for career fairs and taught me how to connect with recruiters to build your network. and not to mention They also held immigration workshops to discuss international student related topics

What have you gained from those services?
Ever since I started utilizing the services that the Broad College and Russell Palmer provide, I became more knowledgeable about the recruitment process and what steps are necessary to take when job searching. Through these career services such as the Global Networking Series, I came to learn that networking and communicating with recruiters is crucial, and always the first step to success. Moreover, my resume underwent a substantial improvement after I took advantage of their drop-by stand in the Minskoff Pavilion, and this is important as well because it is one of the first elements a recruiter will see when reviewing your application online.

How has networking assisted you in the recruiting process?
Russell Palmer establishes great connections with companies all over the globe, and through the Global Networking Series events I have been able to network with multiple different firms, which has made me a better communicator, and thus more competitive in the job market. In addition, it was through these events that I was able to network with Deloitte, which contributed to me receiving the opportunity to intern with them this upcoming winter.

How has networking assisted you in the recruiting process?
I have learned not only about companies but also how to approach different situations during the interview process through networking sessions.

Gaby Cuellar, a Human Resource Management student received an offer from Dell Technology. She wants to share her experiences as below:

What career services have you received?

I have visited the Palmer Center for document review (resume and cover letter), career fair prep, and mock interviews!

What have you gained from those services?

Honestly, I gained more confidence. Personally, after encountering some rejections from employers during my first two years at MSU, I became discouraged and unconfident in my skills. But after utilizing some of the Russel Palmer resources and talking with some of their amazing advisors, I realized that I had the potential and the skills to land an internship. I just had to keep trying and not give up on myself.

How has networking assisted you in the recruiting process?

Networking is so important during the recruiting process! This semester, I had the opportunity to be part of the Global Networking Series and the Human Resource/Management Career Fair. By networking, not only do you get the chance to create relationships and connections; but it makes you noticeable, and it is an avenue for new opportunities in your career.

One-sentence motto/slogan: Believe in yourself and have courage! You are stronger than you think.

2. What has been your favorite part of this year’s networking series?
My favorite part of this year’s series was definitely connecting with many professionals working in the Finance industry during the Employer Networking Sessions. Meher Deb Roy , a junior student in Supply Chain Management, is going to work with Lenovo as their Global Supply Chain Intern in North Carolina next summer. Let’s see how she secured this internship opportunity!

---
• Networking
How did you network with recruiters and professionals?
Yes, I used LinkedIn to reach out to recruiters and people from MSU working at my target companies.

How has networking assisted you in the recruiting process?
I got one of my offers because I networked with the recruiters on LinkedIn, and they helped me through the interview process.

• Career services
What career services have you received?
I spoke to Naomi and Kristen from the Russel Palmer Center often.

What have you gained from those services?
Mock interviews, just general talks about where I am trying to go in life, what I should do to get there, and career fair conversations

• Career fairs & events
What event have you been to?
All career fairs when possible.

What did you do during the career fairs and events?
Talk to as many recruiters as possible and reach out to them on LinkedIn afterward.

What have you gained from those career fairs and events?
I have noticed at MSU career fairs there is not too much of a scope for international students, so I recommend researching on the internet to see which companies sponsor internationals. Apply to those companies and reach out to them on LinkedIn.

• Interview
How did you practice interviews?
Several mock interviews. I also listed 15 basic STAR format questions where I wrote the answer down. It helped to have them in written format, so I remembered all the points I need to cover.

What did you do before your interviews? (like networking or releasing nerves, etc.)
Listened to calming yoga music and drink tea.

What are your tips to succeed in interviews?
I think the interview is the main time to make a connection with the recruiters. Make them want to work with you by making a flowing conversation rather than a strict question-answer typesetting.

• Any other suggestions to peers? (applications, networking, interviewing, etc.)
Please do not give up. There has been a time when I got an offer from my dream company, and then they rescinded it a week later because of my immigration status. Don’t let things like this stop you. Try even harder. Reach out to people on LinkedIn; you have nothing to lose even if they don’t reply! And make sure to practice your interview skills.

Dhwani Jain , an acounting student, has accepted a full-time offer with EY as an Assurance Staff for their Detroit office. She successfully set her apart from other candidates and landed a job. Let’s check out her biggest takeaway!

---

The recruitment process was reasonably straightforward. Since freshman year, I was involved in the recruiting process, going to as many on-campus events and networking with as many people from the firm as possible. It helps that a lot of professionals from these big accounting firms come on campus often, giving students a chance to get to know them on various occasions, and in turn, making a relatively comfortable environment for us to get to know them. I was fortunate enough to be one of the few chosen to attend the firm’s Global Perspectives Conference (GPC) in Chicago my freshman year, which helped me connect with more professionals and build my network. Come junior year, I went through a similar recruitment process, with on-campus interviews and attending networking events that helped me get my internship offer and in turn my full-time offer.

My internship experience was very rewarding and was definitely one of the best learning experiences. As a Winter Assurance Intern at EY in their Detroit Office, I got the opportunity to experience the much talked about ‘busy season’ in the world of public accounting. I was the last intern class to have a hands-on internship experience of working from the client site before the pandemic hit. I had the chance to observe how audit procedures were conducted, transaction testing is performed, and all the work that goes into filing a 10-k. My internship experience was everything I had imagined it to be, and more, and I am very excited to start a full-time position in the firm in their Detroit Office in 2022 after the completion of my Masters in Accounting at MSU.

"Always be thinking of your end goal" by Karthik Rai , a second-year MBA student, has accepted the offer with Kearney in Chicago as an Associate. Let's see his event/fair experiences!

• Networking
How did you network with recruiters and professionals?
I always connected with them through some common interests; for example, I always attended networking events with different companies on campus and stayed connected with them through LinkedIn

How has networking assisted you in the recruiting process?
Networking helped me to get interviews and prepare for the recruiting process. Even during my internship, I set up several networking calls to get an understanding of the different practices and learn more about the company.

• Career services
What career services have you received?
I have received a lot of help from the career service team in form of career and peer coaches. These helped me gain more insight quickly, which is important as an international student. The year-long career coaching and the amazing career management team. who were always there to help, definitely had a positive impact. In fact, my internship with Kearney was through the career fair organized by the career management team.

What have you gained from those services?
As I mentioned above, the career fair helped get me an internship which in turn helped me get my full-time offer. My career coaches and peer coach were also very helpful in helping me prepare for the interviews and the recruitment experience.

• Career fairs & events
What event have you been to?
In the first year, I attended most of the initial career fairs, networking events with different companies, as well as informational sessions. The event that was the most productive for me was the MBA/MS career fair as I was able to get my internship offer through that.

What did you do during the career fairs and events?
During the career fairs, I prioritized the companies that I was really interested in by looking at the companies coming to the career fair before time. That helped me manage my time better during the career fair.

What have you gained from those career fairs and events?
I not only ended up getting my internship offer from the career fair, which converted to full time, but also got an opportunity to network with professionals and alumni representing different companies.

• Interview
How did you practice for interviews?
I practiced for interviews with my career coaches and my peer coach. I also had to do a lot of practice for the case interviews that are involved in the consulting interviews.

What did you do before your interviews? (like networking or releasing nerves, etc.)
I did network and speak to 2nd year students and others who would have previously interviewed with the firm I have an interview with. It helped gain some perspective and helped with gauging expectations.

What are your tips to succeed in interviews?
Be confident and don’t stress out about the process and the end result. It will work against you.

• Return offer (if applicable)
How was your internship experience?
I had a great summer experience at Kearney. I got to work on an engineering design strategy project which was super interesting. Even though the internship was virtual, Kearney made sure I got all the resources I needed to do the work and made sure I had an amazing experience.

What are your recommendations to receive a return offer?
Give your best during the internship. Work hard and make sure you exceed expectations and not just meet them. Don’t forget to set up time to understand your colleagues and the company.

• Any other suggestions to peers? (applications, networking, interviewing, etc.)
Don’t get bogged down by rejections. Things will work out in time. Don’t give up and keep trying!

Siyi (Jojo) Min, an MS in Accounting student, will be joining the Audit & Assurance Analytics Specialist Assistant with Deloitte in Detroit, MI after graduation. She put so much effort in position researching and interview preparation to obtain her dream job. Let’s see her experience sharing!

---

Hi everyone! This is Jojo and I am currently a second year graduate student majoring in Accounting and Information System. For me, as an accounting student, my core competence is the integration of accounting knowledge and programming skills. With that, I mainly searched for jobs with analytics component where I could utilize different coding languages to improve accounting efficiency.

I think Audit & Assurance Analytics Specialist Assistant at Deloitte is a good fit for me. Before the recruiting season, I started to enrich my professional experiences to align with the job description. I applied for the Information System Developer position at MSU’s Art Museum and the Accounting Intern position at Lansing Board of Water & Light, which made me stand out during the interview. I also scheduled several meetings with Russell Palmer Career consultants to refine my resume, practice small talk and my elevator speech.

During the job searching, I attended lots of career fairs and info sessions to have a better understanding of each company’s specialization and scope. Talking with different professionals at these events, I gained a lot of great insights about each company, which also helped me to prepare interesting questions during the interviews.
I am incredibly thankful for the support that I have received from many people around me throughout this recruiting season, and the connections I have made along the way.

Tips:
1. Try to conduct as much company research as you can before attending career fairs and prepare some good questions for recruiters and other professionals you may encounter along the way.
2. Be confident and be yourself during interviews.
I wish you all the best of luck!

11/18/2020

Joyce Wang, an MS in Accounting student, has accepted a full-time offer with EY as an Assurance Staff in their Detroit office. Her networking and interview skills helped her to secure the offer. Let us see her suggestions below:

---
• Networking
1. Ask professional questions
2. Be active even if you have to sit behind a computer screen

• Interview
1. Be yourself
2. Make it a conversational style

• Others
Learn. Learn. Learn. Keep trying and be proactive to seize the day.

Rita Shi, an MS in Accounting student, has accepted a full-time return offer with Dell Technologies as an Analyst, Financial Analysis in their Xiamen office. She received full career support from the Russell Palmer Career Management Center. Here are her takeaways:

---
How did you practice for interviews?
Picking a practice partner will be helpful for the interview. Focus on choosing a partner who has your best interests at heart. This may be your close friend or mentor. Bonus points if they have experience interviewing. When I was looking for a summer internship, I practiced mock interviews with Shinta. She was very experienced and provided me with some constructive feedback. I highly recommend utilizing the career center to anyone who is looking for internship or full-time job opportunities.

What are your recommendations to receive a return offer?
• Your mentors want to see how you would be as a coworker, so act like a coworker, not an intern. Recognize that your input is important and don’t just always expect to be given directions.
• Make sure you are prepared for 1:1s, schedule them if you don't have any.
• Ask your mentor questions, but don’t ask them too many. Really research what you have a question about, and make sure you’ve exhausted all internal and external resources beforehand.
• It's better to make a mistake early and get feedback rather than avoiding feedback until the end.

Any other suggestions to peers?
• Identify your core values and search for institutions which share the same with you
• Make a timeline for your job search and be sure to move forward
• Practice the interview with mentors or partners
• Utilize the career center
• Stay positive, and never give up

Good luck!!
