What can ice dams do to your roof?
Abnormally cold arctic air will be funneling into the U.S. beginning this week. Temperatures will be below normal and remain extremely cold for several days. This typically indicates an increase of pipe bursts, and ice damming.
Ice dams can cause severe damage to your home. If left untreated, they can tear off your gutters, loosen shingles, and cause water to back up under the shingles and drain into your home. Water that cannot drain off properly works its way under your roof covering and flows into the attic.

SERVPRO of Eau Claire – Flu season is here, and it’s often marked by the offers of free flu shots in neighborhood pharmacies and stores across the country. SERVPRO cleaning pros—experts in cleaning and sanitizing building materials, surfaces, and contents after fire, water, or natural disasters—remind home and business owners how important it is to step-up routine cleaning efforts during this time of year. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the flu virus can remain viable on surfaces for up to 48 hours. Cleaning surfaces and objects that are frequently touched minimizes the likelihood of contacting the flu virus when you touch an infected surface.
• According to the CDC, CDC estimates* that, from October 1, 2021 through June 11, 2022, there have been: 8,000,000 – 13,000,000 flu illnesses 3,700,000 – 6,100,000 flu medical visits 82,000 – 170,000 flu hospitalizations 5,000 – 14,000 flu deaths
“As an emergency response company, we understand the hidden danger of contaminated surfaces in a workplace or home,” said Rick Isaacson, CEO of Servpro Industries, LLC. “This time of year, the flu virus can be a ‘hidden danger’ at home, at work, and in the community. It is a serious illness, and we want everyone to take it seriously.”
The CDC recommends the following to help protect yourself or your loved ones from contracting the flu.
• Get vaccinated. The CDC recommends a yearly flu vaccination as the first and most important protection against this serious virus.
• Thoroughly wash your hands (20 seconds or more with soap and water) or sanitize them frequently throughout the day, even if you are not infected, to help protect yourself and others.
• Beware of frequently touched surfaces, like handrails and doorknobs. Keep them clean at home using a bleach and water solution and clean your hands as soon as possible if you must touch them in public.
If you or a family member comes down with the flu despite these precautions, keep in mind the flu spreads primarily through droplets from a sick person when they cough, sneeze, or talk. With that in mind, the CDC offers the following guidelines to help control the spread of the disease:
• Stay home and keep your distance. Infected droplets from a sick person’s nose or mouth can travel up to six feet and land in the noses and mouths of people nearby, exposing them to the illness.
• Wait until you are fever free – without medications – for at least 24 hours before returning to school, work, or normal activities.
• Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue, your sleeve, or your elbow when you cough or sneeze. Dispose of the tissue and clean your hands with soap or a sanitizer with 60 percent alcohol.
There is no such thing as a foolproof flu protection plan, says Isaacson, but frequent hand-washing and conscientious cleaning practices at home, work, and in the community are precautions everyone can practice helping keep them and their loved ones healthy. Traveling for the Holidays? ‘Waterproof’ Your Home Before You Leave
SERVPRO of Eau Claire water damage remediation specialist provides a six-step plan for keeping your home dry and healthy while you’re away
Eau Claire, WI (Grassroots Newswire) ((11/22/2022)) - For many, the holiday season includes travel, whether it is to join a family gathering or enjoy a holiday vacation. These traditional holiday trips stand to amplify an already growing travel demand. The U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics* reports that for July 2022, the number of people boarding a U.S. airline plane for domestic or international travel grew to 69.9 million, up 8.6 percent from July 2021 numbers. As the holiday travel season approaches, the water and fire remediation specialists at SERVPRO® of Eau Claire, caution homeowners that they need to go beyond buying tickets and packing a suitcase before they leave on a trip. Homeowners need to “waterproof” their homes.
“Your home is subject to water damage from inside and out when you head out on a trip,” says Tom Hanaman-Owner of SERVPRO® of Eau Claire. “Leaking or burst pipes can wreak havoc on the inside of your home. Severe weather can pose a flooding threat inside and outside your home. If you are planning to travel this holiday season, there are six important steps you can take before you leave to help ensure your home will be ready and welcoming when you return.”
1. Ask Someone to Check on the House While You’re Gone. Taking the simple step of asking a friend or family member to stop by while you’re gone may catch a potential problem before it becomes a disaster.
2. Check for leaks. Inspect pipes under kitchen and bathroom sinks, check your water heater for cracks or rust, and ensure that hoses connected to dishwashers, refrigerators, and washing machines are leak free.
3. Insulate exposed pipes. Insulating exposed pipes can help prevent them from freezing in cold climates, but wherever you live, your home needs constant air circulation to help prevent water damage and mold caused by condensation. Keep the HVAC system turned on and open the cupboard doors under sinks to promote airflow.
4. Turn Off the Main Water Valve. If you don’t already know where this is, this is a good time to find out – and then shut it off if your home will be unattended and vacant during your trip.
5. Clear Gutters and Downspouts of Debris. Clear out debris, dirt, leaves, and sticks and position downspouts to direct water at least ten feet away from the home to prevent flooding.
6. Inspect and Test the Sump Pump. If you have a sump pump, test it before you leave by filling the sump pit with water and watching to see if the pump empties out the water. This can mean the difference between finding a dry or flooded basement when you arrive home.
“We specialize in water damage remediation so we know how difficult it can be to deal with flooding caused by burst pipes, failed sump pumps, or heavy rainfall, even if you discover the problem right away,” says Hanaman. “It would be even more heartbreaking to return to your home after a holiday trip to find that water has been creating chaos while you were away. Taking steps to ‘waterproof’ your home before you leave on your holiday trip can help ensure you return to a dry, safe home, rested, and relaxed from your time away.”
