Graduating students receiving Master of Fine Arts degrees will have their culminating work on display at Art and Design West. The MFA exhibit featuring the work of four artists will take place May 2-30, with the opening reception scheduled from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, May 2.

The SIUE Suzuki Strings Program includes 250 students ages 3 and up. Some students come from up to 75 miles away to learn violin, viola, or cello. The program has been a part of the Edwardsville community for more than 50 years! The Suzuki Spring Festival Concert is to take place on April 28, at 2 p.m. in the Meridian Ballroom in the Morris University Center.

This Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. visit the Wagner Potters Association/ Art & Design Pottery, Glass and Jewelry sale. The sale will feature more than 1,000 works in ceramics, blown glass, and fine metal jewelry made by students and faculty at SIUE. It will take place in the Art & Design East atrium lobby area.

The SIUE World Music Ensemble presents its spring 2024 concert, Tangos and More with special guest artist, Farshid Etniko. Etniko is well known in the St. Louis area for his stylized guitar playing that incorporates a swirling fusion of multicultural techniques and harmonies. This concert will highlight three styles of Tango from Argentina, Spain, Finland and will include other tunes from faraway places. The event will take place in Room 1115 of Dunham Hall on Sunday, April 21 at 7 p.m. Tickets are available through the provided QR code $5 for the public and free for SIUE students.

Some of Broadway’s most famous songs will be brought to life in the SIUE adaptation of “Gypsy” The Musical. “Gypsy” will be on stage April 17, 18, 19, 20 at 7:30 p.m., and April 21 at 2:00 p.m. in the Dunham Hall Theater. The story is based on the life of Gypsy Rose Lee and her ambitious stage mother. The show does contain adult content. Tickets are $15 or free for SIUE students.

This presentation led by Dr. Jane Hyo Jin Lee, from Stonehill College, will examine the membrane phenomenon called electroporation, diving into established research to shed light on how it begins. Through this practical example, the fascinating blend of mathematics and computational biology will be put on display. This colloquium will take place Thursday, March 28, at 1 p.m. in Science East 2262.

Concertmaster of the world-famous Philadelphia Orchestra, David Kim, returns to Dunham Hall this Sunday, March 24, at 7:30 p.m. to perform Bruch's colorful Scottish Fantasy. The program will begin with Verdi's Overture to Nabucco and end with Shostakovich's epic and dramatic Fifth Symphony. General Admission tickets start at $18, and are free for SIUE students with student ID.

Join the Department of Chemistry for the 47th annual William J. Probst Memorial Lecture. Dr. Steven D. Schwartz, from the University of Arizona will lead the lecture on Monday, March 25 at 7 p.m. in the Meridian Ballroom, Morris University Center. Gain excellent insight into how to succeed as a statistician in the pharmaceutical industry, including what roles to play at different stages of product/drug development, finding relevant sources, and application of statistics in clinical trials. Attendees will get a sneak peak at the various roles, responsibilities and ways statisticians can grow professionally in the field of pharmaceuticals. The colloquium will take place Friday, March 22, at 2 p.m. in Science East 2280. All are welcome to attend, and refreshments will be provided afterwards.

SIUE’s Department of Art and Design will feature renowned photographers and their work this week. The photos from more than 50 artists from around the world will be on display in the “New Realities” exhibit, which is affiliated with the society for Photographic Education conference. The opening reception is scheduled for March 21 from 5-7 p.m. Lastly, SIUE will host Sidian Liu, a photo-based artist, who will be hosting discussions and workshops throughout the day on March 25. Sidian is the recipient of Top 10 of 9th Annual Photography Rankings in China, 2022, “Kunpeng Award" of China Young Photographer Promotion Plan, the 21st Pingyao International Photography Festival, 2021, the top prize of First Female Photographer Competition by Miroir Project, 2021, and the top prize of Banshan Photography Award, 2020, etc.

A once in a lifetime discussion will be held tonight (March 19) at 6:30 p.m. in Dunham Hall. Join Viola Ford Fletcher, the oldest living survivor of the Tulsa Race Massacre, as she shares her story, and discusses how we can use the horrors of the past to create a more just future. Attendees will also get a look at a few excerpts from the upcoming Broadway production Selma The Musical: The Untold Stories. A book signing will be held at 8:30 p.m. after the conversation and performance.

Trish Oberweis, PhD, professor of Criminal Justice Studies, will present the 2024 William and Margaret Going Lecture today. Her research topic is the backlog of unresolved murders in the United States and the emerging tools to address them . The presentation will take place today (March 18) from 4-5:30 p.m. in the MUC International Room.

High school jazz ensembles throughout the region will swing their way onto the campus of SIUE to participate in a day of performances and workshops. The 7:30 p.m. concluding concert is open to the public and will feature participating bands, clinicians, and the SIUE Concert Jazz Band. Because of funding support of the St. Louis Jazz Club, student musicians will benefit from working with additional clinicians at no cost.

U.S. Poet Laureate Ada Limón will be on campus Monday night reading selections from her works. This free event is at 7 p.m. March 11 in the Legacy Room of the Morris University Center. Arts & Issues is partnering with the SIUE Lovejoy Library, the Edwardsville Public Library, and the Edwardsville High School English Department to present this event.

SIUE extreme weather expert Alan W. Black, PhD, assistant professor and Graduate Program Director in the Department of Geography and Geographic Information Sciences is hosting storm spotter training in Morris University Center Mississippi/Illinois Room, Wednesday, February 28 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Free parking will be available in Lot B starting at 6pm. The event is free and open to the public.

Black Theatre Workshop (BTW) is celebrating 25 years! Esteemed alums and current students are combining their talents to present multiple performances this week that reflect a quarter century of this theatrical legacy. This year will also mark Assoc. Prof. Kathryn Bentley’s final year as BTW’s artistic director; she is retiring at the end of this semester.
BTW performances will take place in the Metcalf Theater at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 20-22; 8 p.m. Feb. 23; 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Feb. 24; and 3 p.m. Feb. 25. Admission is free but reservations are required. Donations to Black Theatre Workshop are encouraged.
