$93 million. Thatās how much the General Assembly of Virginia allocated for trails this year ā the most in the stateās history!
And the Shenandoah Valley Bicycle Coalition (SVBC) was involved in the process through statewide coalitions and years of hard work.
In this guest-written blog, SVBC Executive Director Kyle Lawrence shares his experience in working to unlock this historic investment in trails and things the organization learned along the way.
And as evidenced by the photos, he does his work in style and with a great sense of humor. š

Colonnade Bike Park, located underneath Interstate-5, is a historical landmark for Seattle mountain bikers.
The park was constructed by the Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance (EMBA) in 2008, nearly 40 years after the freeway was built and divided the neighborhood. Colonnade created a much-needed connection in that community and it was also the first time riders were given permission to build MTB trails and features on public land in the city.
The park originally served as a training location for bigger, more technical out-of-town rides. The builders thought, āwhat better place to build epic features than under the I-5, close to home and easily accessible after work.ā
But as the mountain bike community in Seattle continues to grow, there is a need to renovate sections of the park to incorporate beginner and intermediate features.
IMBA has helped EMBA secure a grant to upgrade Colonnade for a new generation of riders. EMBA is working on upgrading I-5 Colonnade Park by adding durable, progressive features to make the space more welcoming for a diverse set of inner city users.

The parks department has made the decision to remove the wooden structures that we have installed at Arroyo Park.
Our original vision was to make the jumps more safe for all skill levels to use. Some community members saw the build as an impact to the nature preserve. We worked hard to bring the community together to support our cause and dedicated many volunteer hours. Although we would have liked to keep them, we understand that not everyone was a fan. We try and respect everyoneās opinion, and have exhausted all efforts to show our perspective. We ask that the MTB community also respect this decision.
MAS-EP will continue to move forward in other ways to help bring the sport to more El Paso community members.
Again, as a community we must remain positive and look for other ways to continue to bring the stokeš¤š½

El Paso, we need your input. Please reply to this survey:
The purpose of this survey is to obtain community input on the wood bridges recently built in the Arroyo.
Over the past year and a half the Park Partner groups have been demarcating the areas around the creosote and mesquite ābedsā within the sand bowl to help the regrowth of the arroyo vegetation, continuously blocking new trails throughout by using deadfall and debris, as well as planting and watering new creosote shoots.
There have been a number of cleanup days, and temporary signage put in that requests users not to disturb the progress towards slow regrowth. We are also working with the City on more educational and etiquette-related trailhead signs.
Most of the jumps have been removed (9 in total). The compromise by the Park Partners was to keep one main jump line, and to reinforce and maintain it (the jump line includes a total of 4 new bridges). These wooden bridges were installed to make this jump line safer and to cause less erosion. If these wooden bridges remain, 1 foot square pavers will be placed on the lip and landing of each bridge, so no further erosion takes place along these bridges. There will not be any further building or expansion of any more jumps/ramps or bridges anywhere else in the arroyo.
Which one of the following statements do you support:
Billy Rogers Arroyo Park is a Nature Preserve open for the whole county and should allow for all user groups: the wooden bridges should remain, and MAS-EP (Mountain Action Sports-EP, a Park Partner) agrees to maintain them.
Billy Rogers Arroyo Park is a Nature Preserve open for the whole county and should allow for all user groups to use in its natural state with no man-made construction allowed: the wooden bridges should be removed, and the underlying rock berms restored to their original state by the Park Partners.
