We have another exciting day planned as we continue World Water Week tomorrow, including a talk session dedicated to the Rio Bosque Wetlands park. Join Park Manager John Sproul in a journey through time at the Park where you will see how water availability can completely change a landscape and the species it supports while learning how you can help in the effort to restore our El Paso wetlands. For the last 30 minutes of this talk, Visiting Assistant Professor S. Paola López Ramírez will join John to share the process of Experiencing the Bosque, an artist-led intervention that aims to support our reconnection to land and water through a deep embodied investigation of the park.
When: 1:30 pm–3:00 pm

Did you know 50-75% of the Rio Grande’s water flow comes from snowmelt from the San Juan Mountains of Colorado?
About 75% of this water is removed from the Rio Grande by Colorado and New Mexico for things like agriculture irrigation.
So, what does that leave for El Paso? And what does this mean for the Border Region in the face of climate change??
These are thought provoking questions we should ask ourselves.
If you want to join the conversation, come see us tonight for our Nerd Night where we will learn more about our regional water and explore ways we can be more water smart.

We are excited to invite you to the first of three One Water Cluster seminars to be held this semester on the 4th Thursday of each month, February (2/24), March (3/31), and April (4/28) at 3:00 pm in IDRB 2.204.
Each month a disciplinary expert on water will present their research for ~25 minutes, followed by a moderated discussion that will explore the multidisciplinary aspects and implications of the research, and potential for collaborations.
Our first presenter is Dr. Lixin Jin, an Associate Professor in the Department of Earth, Environmental, and Resources Sciences. Her research focuses on the complex interaction of water, air, biota, and rocks in natural and managed ecosystems in drylands. For this discussion, she will focus on “Opportunities and challenges of sustaining agriculture in drylands: an environmental perspective.”
We look forward to seeing you there to join your colleagues for an exciting talk and discussion. Also please forward this message and attached flyer to your colleagues.
We are excited for our upcoming exhibit, Water/Ways!
This exhibit highlights a very important topic for our region and for life, WATER.
Water/Ways explores the past, present, and future of water in El Paso and how it divides and unites us through historic, artistic, economical, political, and social lenses.
Water/Ways is part of Museum on Main Street, a collaboration between the Smithsonian Institution and The Centennial Museum and Chihuahuan Desert Gardens, and was adapted from an exhibition organized by the American Museum of Natural History, New York.
The Smithsonian portion of the exhibit explores the impacts of water on a larger scale and asks questions like, "As the world’s population grows and the planet changes, can we learn to become better stewards of water and develop sustainable ways to address the challenges of sustaining this crucial resource?"
The application window is now open for the Summer Institute program at the National Water Center! Deadline to apply is February 23rd! Details here ow.ly/p8Xo50HCwGT

After investigating aerosols and their effects on intricate and steadily changing summer storms over NYC, Dr. Hosannah’s desire to explore weather in the Caribbean; simultaneously a place that is on the forefront of global climate change and the region of the world where his parents hail from (Guyana) led him to take on a postdoctoral position at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez after receiving his Ph.D. from the CUNY Graduate Center. There, he investigated multi-scale impacts on weather and climate in the region.
This work led him to extend his analyses to season-long periods, within which Saharan dust intrusion, marine aerosol and smoke created from biomass burning take effect on climate and weather over the region. He has presented his work- related to understanding multi-scale impacts on rainfall in coastal urban environments such as NYC, and tropical environments in the Caribbean at numerous national and international conferences. He envisions his position in academia as a business- for which the research professor is tasked to hire, manage, groups of associates in order to produce a product.
In addition to his strong desire to continually eat from the plate of science, he also dined on the dish of entrepreneurship as one of two directors at Uppademics; a not-for-profit venture that seeks to support, educate, and empower NYC students who wish to balance their artistic passions with their academic goals.
Dr. Nathan Hosannah is faculty at LaGuardia Community College (CUNY) since 2018, and has been engaged in research focused on the effects of local and regional surface-atmospheric processes on weather/climate since 2008. During this discussion, Dr. Hosannah will explore the importance of building relationships with your classmates and professors, defining success for yourself while pursuing both career and personal passions, and the art of adaptation.
