Are you looking for a new plant baby?

Stop by for our Honor System Plant Sale. We know we can’t always keep our nursery open because our team is so often out in the field on project sites. So we’ve opened up a new plant sale method to make sure you always have access to some pretty exciting desert plants!

How it works:
1. Pick a plant…or two or three (you can never have just one, they need friends).
2. Add up your total and scan the QR code for Venmo or CashApp.
3. Send us your money!
4. Take a photo of your purchase and a screenshot of your Venmo/CashApp Confirmation and send those to 915-490-7034.
5. Take your new plant babies home and enjoy!

Chihuahuan Desert/Texas native plant highlight: Texas Mountain Laurel (Sophora secundiflora).
Our office sits across the parking lot of . We are often in the gardens and wetlands doing maintenance and restoration work. One of our staff members, Syd, came across a blooming Texas Mountain Laurel today. Their flowers are a bright purple with a sweet aroma that remind you of grapes! They’re very attractive to pollinators, as you can see here!
The seeds of the TML are in a pod that look like peanuts and when you crack them open, they’re a beautiful crimson color (sometimes orange, sometimes pink). But be careful not to eat them! The seeds are toxic if ingested. They have been used in indigenous spiritual practices as a hallucinogenic agent, but we would not recommend trying that at home! Planting TMLs is a great way to attract birds and pollinators to your yard/garden though!

Title:
Secretive Serpents: Following Rattlesnakes through the Chihuahuan Desert

Abstract:
Snakes are a vital component to ecosystems across the world. In the desert southwest of the United States, this group of legless reptiles reaches its highest diversity in the nation. Due to their relatively small size, many mammals and birds will eat snakes. This leads snakes to a relatively secretive lifestyle. To gain further insight into the ecology of these important desert dwellers, we surgically implant them with radio transmitters. This allows us to reliably locate individuals and peer into their secretive lives. We will discuss research on the Western Diamond-backed, Eastern Black-tailed, and Rock Rattlesnakes in far West Texas, as well as other local snakes and the cultural perceptions of our limbless friends.

Biography:
Joshua Mead is a Doctoral Candidate at The University of Texas at El Paso, where his current research focuses on the spatial and thermal ecology of three species of rattlesnakes in the mountains of West Texas. Josh earned his Bachelor’s degree in his home state at the University of Nebraska in Fisheries and Wildlife. He then completed a Master’s degree at Fort Hays State University in Kansas. His research at FHSU looked into the spatial ecology of the Western Massasauga rattlesnake. Josh’s other research interest include occupancy and general ecology of amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. He has a passion for outreach and education, including teaching labs such as Herpetology, Vertebrate Zoology, and Mammalogy during his collegiate career. In his free time Josh enjoys hiking, wildlife viewing, reading, wood working, and spending time with his dog, Lucchese.
