Showcasing innovative performers in the Philanthropy Theatre, an intimate "jewel box" of a venue in the Plaza Theatre Performing Arts Centre.

A local performing arts series created in 2014 by the El Paso Community Foundation, in partnership with El Paso Live, to promote community arts groups and the intimate Philanthropy Theatre in the Plaza Theatre Performing Arts Centre.

This Sunday, celebrate Mother's Day with "Arabica," a unique blend of music by Doug Adamz and Light Rain and belly dance, featuring Sisters of the Moon, a group that has been revived by the daughters of two of its founders, Leilainia Marcus and Kareesha Willow. The El Paso Community Foundation Jewel Box Series at the Philanthropy Theatre returns with Teatro Neplanta's play AL'S CLUB at 2:30 pm Sunday, March 10 in the Phil. El Pasoan Mathew Bianchi's play emerged from Teatro Neplanta's 24-hour play festival 2022 and has been fleshed out into a full-on production directed by Adam Zarowski. It focuses on the interactions of three people in a bar and deals with ego, faith, addiction and universal questions. Border Theatre is back with an all-new, interactive show called "Dare (Me) to be Stuspid!" at 2:30 pm Sunday, Feb. 11 in the Philanthropy Theatre.
Written and directed by Austin Savage and students from the Border Theatre acting labs, the show is about a 16-year-old struggling with identity amidst family and social media pressures.

The eighth season of the El Paso Community Foundation Jewel Box Series at the Philanthropy Theatre continues with the Star on the Mountain Theatrical Productions' staging of Ellen Struve's comedy-drama RECOMMENDED READING FOR GIRLS. It's about a beleaguered woman who begins to see the heroines of her favorite childhood books — in the flesh!

Tickets for the El Paso Community Foundation Jewel Box Series in the Philanthropy Theatre's eighth season go on sale Tuesday, Sept. 26 at the Plaza Theatre Box Office and Ticketmaster.com.

The season opens at 2:30 pm Sunday, Oct. 8 with Jan H. Wolfe's OUT OF THE CLOSET, INTO THE FIRE, a series of real-life stories of gay and trans people, which will be delivered by stage actors.

RECOMMENDED READING FOR GIRLS, Star on the Mountain Theatrical Productions, 2:30 pm Nov. 12 — A comedy-drama about a distressed woman who gets a little help from friends — the title characters of her favorite childhood books.

AN AFTERNOON OF COMEDY, Lando VC and Friends, 2:30 pm Dec. 19 — Featuring the Church Bar comedy night host and others in an unusual setting (hint: it's not a club).

GARY JOHNSON, LIVE!, Gary Johnson, 2:30 pm Jan. 14 — The singer, songwriter and flatpicking guitar stylists offers an intimate performance of a range of music styles, rooted in folks, blues, country and rock.

DARE (ME) TO BE ... STUSPID!, Border Theatre, 2:30 pm Feb. 11 — Three one-acts connected by a 16-year-old girl trying to figure out who she is among a variety of societal and personal pressures.

AL'S CLUB, Teatro Neplanta, 2:30 pm March 10 — El Paso's newest theater group presents an original play by Matt Bianchi that grew out of a 24-hour play festival and workshops. It takes place in a bar and deals with ego, addiction, drunk driving and life's eternal questions.

THE SCARECROW, KESSTO Kreatures, 2:30 pm April 14 — An original take on 'The Wizard of Oz' from another point of view in this mixture of musical and puppetry from playwright, teacher and Jim Henson Foundation grant recipient Anthony Michael Stokes.

ARABICA, Light Rain and Sisters of the Moon, 2:30 pm May 12 — Doug Adamz and Light Rain, which launched in the 1970s, and Sisters of the Moon, Judy Marcus' belly dance troupe that now includes daughter Leilania Marcus, weave their magic in this afternoon of music and dance.

It's our lucky seventh! The seventh season of the El Paso Community Foundation Jewel Box Series at the Philanthropy Theatre returns — with seven shows. This year's productions range from a stage version of Mitch Albom's "Tuesdays with Morrie" to several original works, including the historical drama "NO MAS."
