Happy National Aviation Day from Air Station Elizabeth City!

Our story began 74 years ago on August 15th, 1940, when CGAS Elizabeth City was commissioned! Starting with only four Officers and 52 Enlisted personnel, our unit has grown to over 300 personnel! Our MH60T covers MD to SC and C130 crews conduct missions nationwide.

Denim Day 2024!!

Denim Day is a campaign on a Wednesday in April in honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month. It is internationally recognized as the longest running sexual violence prevention and education campaign in history. It asks community members, elected officials, businesses and students to make a social statement with their fashion statement by wearing jeans on this day as a visible means of protest against the misconceptions that surround sexual violence.

Congratulations to AMT1 Sullivan!

This week, the D5 Family recognizes AMT1 James (Sully) Sullivan with a long overdue !

When unexpected damage from malfunctioning electronic equipment grounded a critical Search & Rescue aircraft from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City last year, AMT1 Sullivan quickly and carefully designed a complex, structural repair plan to return the damaged aircraft to full service. 👏

Executing his well-engineered repair plan, AMT1 and his newly formed Tiger Team began work on a Friday to disassemble the affected area, remove damaged material, fabricate repair pieces and skillfully reconstruct the structure. 🔧

By Monday, the aircraft was ready for flap checks and final inspection. In only 4 days - despite an expected weeks-long maintenance session to repair the extensive damamge - the aircraft was mission ready.

Thank you, AMT1 Sullivan (and Tiger Team!) for sharing your technical expertise to keep operations running and for your unwavering devotion to duty and service to people. 🇺🇸

Check out this case and the press release below if you missed it! Our MH-60 crews assisted Station Fort Macon’s 47-foot Motor Life Boat crew as they navigated their way back to safety after rescuing 5 people from an anchored catamaran! Coast Guard teamwork at its finest!

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — The Coast Guard rescued five people Friday from an anchored 38-foot catamaran that was beset by weather conditions caused by Tropical Storm Ophelia within Lookout Bight in Cape Lookout, North Carolina.

The owner of sailing vessel Wanderful Life used a cell phone to call Coast Guard Sector North Carolina watchstanders on Friday evening at 7:13 p.m. and report his concern with local weather while being anchored within Lookout Bight. The owner of the vessel did not feel comfortable in the channel and requested to be rescued by the Coast Guard.

All passengers aboard were wearing lifejackets and three of them were children, ages 10, 7, and 4.

A Coast Guard Station Fort Macon 47-foot Motor Life Boat crew, got underway at 7:55 p.m. and transited through the narrow channel with the use of M127A1 parachute flares to illuminate their way due to the adverse conditions created by Tropical Storm Ophelia.

The station crew arrived on scene at 8:55 p.m. and began their personnel transfer from the sailing vessel to the station boat, getting all five passengers aboard by approximately 9:23 p.m.

A Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew also arrived on scene and provided an overhead light for the transit back to the station, arriving there at 10:22 p.m.

The sailing vessel was left anchored and will be assessed by local salvage crews, once Tropical Storm Ophelia passes.

The conditions at the time were 6-foot to 8-foot seas, with occasional 10-foot swells. The winds were 35 to 40 mph.

There were no reported injuries.
