Mount Joy Township Forest Fire Company & Natural Emergency Support Team
Fire department
At the Regular monthly meeting for June 2024, the members and officers in attendance voted regrettably, but unanimously to disband the organization. This has come to pass through two main factors. Firstly, the Lancaster County Fire service as it currently exists sees zero need for dedicated forest fire crews. This was key in our decision to reorganize into an all encompassing Wildland Emergency Response unit. However there is still little to no interest in this sort of resource being created as the various volunteer fire companies of the county are well equipped to handle any size Wildland conflagration, search, or technical environmental rescue....until they aren't.
Secondly, and more glaringly, financial insolvency. We sit here with tens of thousands of dollars of equipment that was paid for with tax and donation dollars that the State of Pennsylvania sacrificed when they refused to allow us a Warden due to the actions of people who haven't had anything to do with the organization in a decade. It was left to rot. Folks that is YOUR State taxes at work. That is the "Brotherhood" we have experienced over the last 5 years. In that time we have been funding the vast majority of the organizations bills OURSELVES. So when those same ex members go out of their way to sabotage what little fundraising we could manage, it has finally reached a point where it is no longer worth the sacrifices our families have been making. We believe in N.E.S.T. . But nobody else seems to.....and we accept that.
Liquidation will be a private endeavor. As far as equipment going to other organizations, we are aware of the wants and needs, and those decisions will be made in the next few months and those organizations will be contacted.
We very graciously thank those who have supported us through this endeavor.
