Stat! Another new Scholarship has been endowed; the Valerie Blackburn Memorial Nursing Scholarship. Valerie retired as an RN from Sutter Roseville Medical Center. She had 2 sons (Matt and Kyle) and a loving husband. Taka Blackburn has created this scholarship in memory of his beautiful, caring wife, Valerie.
Cliff graduated from Elk Grove High School in 1949 and spent 40 years in education in the fire service, 32 of those years with the Elk Grove Fire Protection District. During those years, he was instrumental in establishing the Elk Grove Fire District Fire Explorer Post which encouraged young people to pursue a career in fire service. He was also active with the Elk Grove Fire Muster team that promoted the preservation of historic firefighting methods and antique fire apparatus. Congratulations to Recipient: Osbaldo F.

ANOTHER NEW SCHOLARSHIP! Kathy and Dr. Suman Singha have endowed a scholarship through the Foundation. Preference is given for financial need and the student must be involved in S.T.E.M. with a GPA of 3.5. Must plan to be a full-time student at a 4-year College/University, or at a Community College. The student also must be involved with School activities (extracurriculars) and community service. 2 Letters of recommendation from your school faculty. Oh yes, the Scholarship amount is $1,000! Chris graduated from Sheldon High School in 2007, having enjoyed playing both the stand up bass and the electric bass in various bands directed by James Mazzaferro as well as at the Jazz Jubilee. He went on to study at several colleges where he studied engineering and then pursued a career as an emergencyy medical technician. He always had a love for music. Congratulations to Recipient: Sun-Valery Kim!
Christopher Marshall was born in 1986 and departed this life in 2005 at 18 years old. He was an intelligent young man; a GATE student starting in the 4th grade at Elk Grove Elementary School; a member of the Renaissance Club at Joseph Kerr Middle School; had a 4.0 GPA at Elk Grove High School and winner of the Oral Language Fair for Dramatic Interpretation for 3 years. Congratulations to Recipients: Arshdeep K. and Jake D.!
Cindi was a teacher at several school districts in California as well as an elementary grade teacher with the Elk Grove Unified School District. She was a mother to three children who attended Elk Grove schools. Cindi also was a volunteer seamstress for the Sacramento Ballet. After retiring, Cindi continued to volunteer in classrooms to encourage reading and academics. Congratulations to Recipients: Edgar F. and Noah R.!

Celesta Ann Simas loved animals. She and her husband moved to a small ranch in Elk Grove where they raised their family. Celesta raised many animals: horses, cows, goats, chickens, dogs and cats. Her love for animals and caring for them was her favorite pastime and she taught her four children to care for them as well. She was also involved with the Performing Animal Welfare Society - PAWS. Congratulations to Recipient: Isabella D.!
Reno and Chet Dawson were the first ever "husband and wife" teaching combination hired by Elk Grove Unified School District in 1961. They devoted their lives to the education and support of young people in Elk Grove. Chet, a champion of the "underdog," was a counselor, teacher, and coach at several schools who spent countless hours working with at-risk kids. Reno was a teacher and librarian who was recognized many times by the School Board and the State of California for her innovative teaching style and her successful library program.
