Appalachian Center for Civic Life

The Center is not just about volunteerism; it's about creating positive social change and dealing with root causes of social inequities.

The Appalachian Center houses the Bonner Program, Appalachian Center Associates, Civic Leader Scholars, Civic Innovation major, Intentional Break Program, and Campus Service Programs. As part of Emory & Henry's mission to integrate education with service and citizenship, the Appalachian Center for Civic Life exists to help individuals and student groups with short-term and extended service activities, while establishing service partnerships between the college and local rural communities.

A BIG thank you to all in the community—on campus and off—who donated to the Spirit Week Thanks-Giving Back Food Drive. We collected 4 large overflowing boxes of food that will go to local individuals and families through Ecumenical Faith In Action and the Meadowview UMC Food Distribution program.

A special thanks goes out to the E&H Dining Services/Sodexo team and Beta Lambda Zeta for your large donations.

Thanks for giving generously!

Welcome new students and those able to be on campus with us this semester — you belong here! We will greatly miss all the faces of students who will be remote, but don’t lose your connection. You remain an important part of our Emory & Henry family whether or not you’re near or far. Here’s to a great academic year ahead— one in which we come together to overcome and hold up our Emory values!

We’re so proud of you and can’t wait to see how you change the world next!

It can be discouraging and overwhelming during this time of great need and physical distancing to feel like we don’t have a way to help our communities. Be encouraged...you can make a difference...no gesture of kindness is too small!

Keep in mind these 3 C’s in this time: Connection (stay connected to people and communities you care about), Compassion (step outside of your circumstances to show care and concern for others...you’ll find that you’re uplifted in the process), Creativity (don’t let isolation be a barrier...we have to think creatively in this time how to do our part in small, meaningful ways)

We’re in this TOGETHER right now, and together we’ll get through it. Please don’t hesitate to ask for assistance during this time.

Check out ways that you can reach out meaningfully to your communities. This list is by no means exhaustive. We’d love to hear from you if you have examples/stories about how you’re connecting to community and/or if you want to add resources to this list. Contact Maggie Obermann — [email protected] — to share.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the MLK Week Giving Back Day by donating items and money to the drive, making/facilitating care packages, and assisting with the YWCA TechGYRLS program. We really enjoyed having TechGYRLS girls and staff on campus — they are awesome! We estimate that 100 care packages of hygiene items were made and 3 large boxes of clothing donated ($600-800 worth of donations)! These will be given to Ecumenical Faith in Action, Abuse Alternatives, and the YWCA YW CARES program with a focus on distribution to women and teens experiencing violence, homelessness, and who are in need of basic supplies. Thanks for making this possible!

Spring Service Plunge '20 01/16/2020

Welcome to all new E&H students! Thank you to those students and to the Orientation Team for joining Spring Service Plunge '20. We had a great time together contributing to the mission of Ecumenical Faith in Action (Abingdon) by volunteering at the food pantry and New Life Thrift Store. We learned that hundreds of families in Washington County benefit from the food pantry every month and that sales from the thrift store allow EFIA to meet these needs and more. While Spring Service Plunge is our first day of community engagement this semester, let's not make it our last. Contact Maggie Obermann - [email protected] - to find out how you can be involved in giving back.

Res Life & Mary's Lunchbox Volunteering 01/16/2020

Thanks to all Res Life participants who volunteered with Mary's Lunchbox during spring training! The efforts of this group resulted in over 250 elementary school aged kids in our community getting food assistance over the weekends. A little bit of time and effort can make a difference. Please let Maggie Obermann - [email protected] - know if you'd like to volunteer with Mary's Lunchbox or a similar organization in our community.
