Beyond Toxics
We are working to strengthen Oregon’s environmental health policies to better protect people.
We are a statewide environmental justice organization advancing policies that ensure meaningful participation and cultivating grassroots leadership from Oregon’s frontline and impacted communities. Established in 2001, we are a multicultural, inter-generational team dedicated to centering community leaders and building out the true diversity of our state’s vibrant Environmental Justice movement.
Join us this Saturday, August 31st, from 9-11am for a community work party at Golden Gardens! 🌿 We'll be tackling invasive species like Teasel, Canada Thistle, and blackberry near the protected area on the west side of the park. Now that turtle nesting season is over, it's the perfect time to help restore and maintain this beautiful habitat. 🐢
No experience needed—just bring your good energy and a water bottle to stay hydrated! Tools and gloves will be provided.

Joel Geier, a neighbor living next to Coffin Butte, recently spoke with California Senator Alex Padilla about the much-needed update to the EPA’s regulation on landfill methane emissions. Joel highlighted the risks that poor landfill management practices pose to nearby communities and emphasized urgency: "We need the EPA to raise the bar." Together, we’re pushing for stronger protections and a healthier future for all. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to fight for stronger waste management practices!💪
We're committed to uplifting community voices and advocating for environmental justice around the Coffin Butte Landfill! Our goal? To reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve air and water quality, and strengthen waste management practices across the state and the country!

In Benton County, Coffin Butte Landfill threatens our environment and community health. Nicknamed "Coughing Butte," it's a major methane emitter and a hazard to nearby residents. Hundreds of locals are standing against the proposed expansion, that risks increasing pollution and closing evacuation routes. We are on the ground, monitoring air quality and supporting community activism!

News Alert! Republic Services, which operates Coffin Butte Landfill near Corvallis, is planning an expansion. The landfill is currently under investigation by OSHA for worker safety concerns and the EPA for excessive greenhouse gas emissions. We're working with residents nearby who already face harmful impacts from the landfill to advocate against the expansion.
“We got involved in this because neighbors frequently had ‘bad air days’ where the air would smell so bad outside that they would be either afraid or unable to go outside," said Mason Leavitt, of Beyond Toxics. "We've heard reports from neighbors of people waking up with burning eyes.”

Beyond Toxics is happy to announce that we have been selected as a recipient of the Buffalo Exchange Tokens for Bags® program from July through December 2024!🪙 You can now donate to Beyond Toxics when you shop at the Eugene Buffalo Exchange.
Instead of a plastic bag, the Tokens for Bags® program offers every customer who makes a purchase one “token” valued at five cents (the cost to produce a bag) to donate to one of several local charities selected by the store. The program has saved over 19.25 million plastic bags from the landfill and raised thousands for nonprofits. Do your part and opt out of plastic bags next time you shop! And don't forget to drop that token in our box :)
We Need To Talk About Neonics
These Popular Insecticides Are Linked To Pollinator Loss, Water & Soil Contamination, Even Human Health Issues
Erin Brockovich and Suzanne Boothby (Jun 26, 2024)
https://www.thebrockovichreport.com/p/we-need-to-talk-about-neonics?utm_source=post-email-title&publication_id=174327&post_id=146019375&utm_campaign=email-post-title&isFreemail=true&r=itwt6&triedRedirect=true&utm_medium=email
A growing body of alarming evidence shows the high costs of needless neonic use far outweighs the rare and often nonexistent benefits.
“For a long time people thought there were only ecological impacts of neonicotinoids,” said EWG Senior Toxicologist Alexis Temkin at the Silent Spring 2.0 conference hosted in May 2024 by the Chicago Center for Health and Environment. “But there’s a lot of emerging evidence that they are impacting reproductive health and also evidence that they can be neurotoxic, potentially impacting children’s brain development.”
Did you know the Climate Protection Program aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2050? This program is crucial for clean air, job creation, and stronger local economies!
Why Support the CPP?

Our Story
Frontline Oregon communities, especially people of color, people of reproductive age, migrant workers and their families, and low income individuals and communities are disproportionately impacted and harmed by exposure to toxics in their communities and work. Because of industry's influence, and environmental racism, Oregon's regulatory and legal system are inadequate or non-existent to address and remedy these injustices.
