With temperatures climbing into the high 80s, this is a quick reminder regarding what to expect from your cooling system on these extra hot days.
Most residential cooling systems in the Pacific Northwest are designed to cool a home down to 75 degrees on warm days, up to 90 degrees. If you try to set your system is to 68 degrees on a 90+ degree day, it’s not a temperature that your system can maintain. It can even harm your system, especially if its older or running inefficiently.

While we retreat inside our homes to stay warm and dry, the cold outside can wreak havoc on our plumbing and HVAC systems without the proper preparation.

VOCs can be harmful to your health, and you want to keep them out of your home. Look for products marked as "Low VOC" or "VOC Free" next time you are remodeling to ensure you indoor air quality remains high.
With the Pacific Northwest again experiencing hotter days than usual, if you have an air conditioner or other cooling system, it’s probably seeing a lot of use. But what should you do if it unexpectedly quits on you? While we recommend contacting a professional like us first, here are several things you can check to try to restore your cool air:
Check your Filter
A dirty filter can restrict airflow and cause a lot of problems. It causes your air conditioner to work less efficiently, and if left unaddressed can cause the unit to stop working or damage the unit. If it stops working check on your filter and replace if filthy. Then, check the indoor coil for ice. If frozen, melting the ice with a fan can take some time, but is the safest method to restore your cool air.
Check your Thermostat
Check your thermostat to ensure that your unit is set to Cool and a realistic temperature. On days that are 100+ degrees F outside your air conditioner is working its hardest. It is likely not designed for temperatures this high, as these consecutive 90-100 degree are new to the Seattle summers. If you set the indoor temperature to something too low, like 66 degrees on a 99-degree day, it can cause damage to the unit and cause it to stop working. A good indoor temperature is about 20 degrees less than the current outside temperature.
Check your Circuit Breaker
If you’re A/C or Heat Pump breaker is tripped, reset it by flipping it off and back on after 30 seconds. If in a home with central heating, like a furnace-A/C or furnace-heat pump combination, flip the breaker for this indoor unit as well. If it’s not tripped, it’s still a good idea to flip it off.
Call an HVAC Expert
If you’re A/C stops working you should call a local expert, like GS Heating, Cooling & Electrical. If it stopped working but resumed cooling, it’s still a good idea to have it checked out. You don’t want it to die for good during this record hot summer. Visit us at www.gsheating.com or call (425) 341-4689.
Finding a new air conditioner for your home can certainly be overwhelming–there are just so many options to choose from! Fortunately, you don’t have to pick out a new AC all on your own, as we are willing to lend a helping hand!
