Attention all Struble Trail users!🚨

We've noticed increased hornet and yellow jacket activity at:
• The pedestrian bridge on Dowlin Forge Rd, near Fillman Rd
• The wooden footbridge connecting Dowlin Forge Park to the trail

Our Parks Department is on it and working to remove the nests ASAP. In the meantime, please stay alert and be cautious around these areas.

If you encounter hornets or yellow jackets, do not disturb them. Move away calmly and quickly.

If you're allergic to stings, carry your meds and inform others. 🐝

Thanks for your cooperation and stay safe out there!

A big thank you to our incredible volunteers! 🌟

Over the weekend, with just a few amazing individuals, our Uwchlan Township Environmental Advisory Council members and volunteers managed to make a huge impact on RT. 100!

Together, they collected a whopping 17 bags of trash, transforming that stretch of roadway into a cleaner, more beautiful space for everyone. 🚮 Combined with events from last year, the total bags of trash collected now stands at 64! 🌎

Special thanks to Sergeant Ryan Murphy from the Uwchlan Township Police Department, who ensured their safety amidst the busy traffic.

Want to get involved? The next clean-up is scheduled for April 14th, starting at 9:00 a.m. at Baird Park (715 N. Ship Rd, Exton). All ages are welcome! 💪

Over the weekend, eight volunteers helped to clean up litter in local catch basins.

Overall, 22 bags of trash were collected as well as old road signs.

Ironically, one of these was a “Litter Crews Ahead” sign that had been discarded! 🗑️🗑️🗑️

Special thanks to Officer Steve Scott from the Uwchlan Township Police Department for helping to keep us safe during the event.

Thank you to our volunteers for helping clean up our environment!♻️

Thank you to all the dedicated volunteers who came out in the rain today to help plant 100 trees!

Tree Planting October 14th -> TOMORROW 🙂

It looks like we will have a brief window in the morning before the rain rolls in. We will be there early if anyone wants to arrive at 8:30 to get started.

We completed a lot of site preparations today (including augering the planting holes) and would like to move forward with getting the trees in the ground before the rain comes. We will work until we get rained out.

Can’t wait to see you there!

A wonderful side project for our Heart of Uwchlan team at Uwchlan’s Rhondda Community. This project used dredged sediment from the pond to make a meadow for our local habitat and stormwater management. Great job and many thanks to Toni Gorkin, Kathy Tracy and our many volunteers!

Thanks to Katharina Henderson, Heart of Uwchlan Team member and Master Watershed Steward, for helping Toni Gorkin talk about native plants for Earth Day at the Lionville Y. We handed out lots of seeds, handouts, and information to encourage sustainable gardening with native plants.

EAC member Jim Warihay and his wife, Peggy, installed a new bluebird house at the Heart of Uwchlan Wetland Garden. Tree swallows moved in and have laid several eggs. Although not bluebirds, these are great occupants to have, as they consume mosquitoes and other insects.

🚧 Project Alert: Acker Park 🚧
The Acker Park Detention Basin Retrofit project is underway! Modifications to the existing stormwater management basin will incorporate native flowers, grasses and shallow collection areas to improve water quality within the watershed and reduce the rate of runoff being discharged downstream. Runoff carries pollutants such as sediment, fertilizer, pet waste, and oil and gas from vehicles. Upon completion, the basin will also provide a natural haven to support our pollinators, butterflies, and birds. The bulk of the work is anticipated to take approximately 3 to 4 weeks, weather permitting. Funding for this project was provided by a grant from the Department of Environmental Protection. The park will remain open during the construction.

The Environmental Advisory Council has adopted a one mile stretch of route 100 as part of PennDOTs' Adopt-A-Highway litter clean up program. The stretch starts at Gordon drive and goes to Sheree Blvd. The Adopt-A-Highway program requires that we perform at least two clean-ups per year. Volunteers for clean up events would be gratefully welcome. Keep an eye on the Uwchlan Township EAC website page for a schedule of litter clean up events this Spring. https://www.uwchlan.com/262/Environmental-Advisory-Council

The Heart of Uwchlan team and Pennsylvania Master Naturalists sowed native plant seeds in jugs for winter stratification in mid December. Seedlings from the jugs when opened in the spring will be used in the Heart of Uwchlan gardens, the Rhondda Pollinator garden, and made available for Uwchlan EAC events to share with gardeners in the area for their own gardens. More jugs will be sown in January. Seeds sown included swamp milkw**d, butterfly w**d, purple coneflower, blue vervain, several kinds of goldenrod and asters, wild bergamot, and other native plants that are valuable for pollinators.

See the plant lists and other helpful information, including how to do winter sowing in plastic jugs, on the Uwchlan Township website, links on the Environmental Advisory Council page:
