YOUNG PATRIOT, AIDEN, MAKES HIS MESSAGE CLEAR:
Vote Nov 6. Put COREY STEWART in the Senate. Put THOMAS OH and JEFF DOVE in the House. Don’t let the Democrats reverse the progress of President Trump’s “Promises Made Promises Kept.” Your vote has consequences. If you do not vote, that has consequences. Make Fairfax Great Again. Support the Red Tsunami in Virginia. Where does Young Patriot Aiden get his message out? At Mason Farmers Market grassroots, of course.

DO YOU KNOW “WHO REPRESENTS YOU?” – IT’S COREY STEWART FOR U.S. SENATE
The signs are clear at Mason’s Farmers Market in Annandale, and Young Patriot Aiden knows that with Corey Stewart in the U.S. Senate and Thomas Oh from the 8th District and Jeff Dove from the 11th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives, we ensure the realization of President Donald Trump’s intention to Make America Great Again. Lola LeCraw, coordinator of the market’s Republican volunteers, takes every opportunity to tout the President’s achievements and explain the advantages of having Corey Stewart, Thomas Oh and Jeff Dove in the Congress. Volunteers Mary Tanzer and Glen Scheirer remind the folks to know the candidates and vote in the mid-term elections that take place on November 6, 2018. Was Columbus a Republican?
Fairfax County Republican Committee
Fellow Fairfax Republicans:
On this day in 2014, I sent you an email about cities like Seattle and Berkeley that have renamed Columbus Day “Indigenous People’s Day.” I wrote then that the goal of the “progressive” left was not to enlighten with more accurate history, but to undermine our confidence in America by attacking our past.
Here we are, three years later, and the NYPD is guarding the statue of Christopher Columbus in Columbus Circle around the clock; five statues of the great explorer in our largest city have already been defaced. The “Revolutionary Abolitionist Movement” has called on antifa groups around the country to do the same. This might be a good day to be in the red paint business.
The Beach Boys didn’t know how right they were: Most Americans “don’t know much about history,” and more and more of what they learn in school is wrong. Just think of what things will be like when today’s school kids are able to vote.
Once you’ve been taught that Columbus is responsible for every ill deed committed by white people on this continent, it’s safe to say you’re not likely to be voting Republican. Once you learn that the purpose of the Constitution was to preserve slavery, how can you compromise with a party that rejects the idea that America is irredeemably corrupt?
You see, the many debates going on in our country today that we think are about discrete issues are not actually about statues, or the flag, or guns, or immigration. They are not about the First Amendment or the Second Amendment or anything else in the Constitution. They are not even about higher principles, like the value of free speech.
There is actually just one debate, and that one is about the soul of America: Does she deserve our love and respect? If we had a common understanding on that question, our other disputes would be healthy, civil, and productive.
But we have no common understanding, largely because the Democratic Party has been taken over by radicals who do not love this country. This bears repeating: Radical “progressives” may think they love an idealized image of humanity living in perpetual peace, but they do not love this country. They spin fairy tales of perfect equality and universal justice and the wondrous freedom of every human being to live unconstrained by any limits. There are many good, honest Americans who vote for Democrats – but they are being deceived. They are being deceived about our history, about reality, and about the nature of evil.
Our nation is imperfect, as all human institutions are and ever will be. So are our leaders, past and present. Yet we are still a great nation, and we have every right to love our country. We have the right to honor our past, and to honor those who had the vision and strength of character to mold the clay of reality to shape what we call America. We have that right not just because it is our country (although that’s not a bad reason), but because America remains “a light unto the nations.” (Why else do you think so many countries have put stars on their flags?)
As Republicans, we understand the nature of reality: it is cold, and hard, and unforgiving. We also know that this harshness is mitigated by love: the love of God, the love of family and friends, and the love of country. We know that if we cannot love our country, we cannot love each other as Americans.
In fact, it is only through an understanding of reality – the world as it is – that we can ever hope to improve ourselves as human beings and as a society. Since the first settlements at Jamestown and Plymouth, America has done just that. The ethic of self-improvement is the ethic of America. The American dream is to become not just better off, but just plain better. We Republicans understand that our economy, our educational system, our health care system, and much more about our country can be better. Our solutions are better, because they are grounded in the truth, not fantasy.
We Republicans don’t always get it right – just look across the river. Columbus didn’t either, since he never made it to India. But, like Columbus, we know where we came from, and we’re pointed in the right direction. The other guys are rowing in circles and punching holes in the bottom of the boat. And that’s on a good day.
Here in Virginia, we have an important choice to make. Twenty-nine days from today we will elect a new Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, and House of Delegates. Where will you stand?
Will you stand proudly with a party that still believes in America, works for practical and productive change based on a sound understanding of reality, and honors our past while looking ahead with clear eyes?
Or will you support a party that’s built on ethnic and social division, can’t see and won’t defend what’s best about our past, and doesn’t know the difference between a kaleidoscope and a telescope?
On November 7, please vote for Ed Gillespie, Jill Vogel, and John Adams. Vote Republican for the House of Delegates. Vote for a better America and a better Virginia.
Most Sincerely,
Matt Ames

How Long Must Parents Wait?
By Chris Braunlich
10/3/2017 -- In a recent news release, Governor Terry McAuliffe heralded the fact that 86 percent of Virginia schools were fully accredited - "a record high" for his administration and a five point improvement over last year.
He neglected to mention that 88 schools failed accreditation - a 203 percent increase in unaccredited schools over last year, and more unaccredited schools this year than in the previous ten years combined.
In a new poll by Christopher Newport's Wason Center, the most important issue most voters want the next Governor to work on is "improving K-12 education." Improving educational quality for the children in those 88 schools ought to be a top consideration.
Thirteen schools have failed accreditation for three years or more. Despite throwing hundreds of thousands of dollars in extra "Executive Leadership" funding at Petersburg, the students of Vernon Johns Middle School are attending an unaccredited school for the twelfth consecutive year. Despite a new $44.2 million school building, the child who entered first grade six years ago at Alexandria's Jefferson-Houston Elementary has now spent her entire school career in an unaccredited school.
If anything, this year's accreditation list points up two things -
First, the divide in education is growing. Good schools on the right track with the right leadership are getting better. Poorly performing schools without the right kind of leadership continue to decline. And continued geographic concentrations of poverty and wealth have all too often meant different tracks for the schools those children attend.
The second is that the state seems powerless to do anything to help the children in these schools. And while that may seem like an excuse, the reality is that the Virginia Constitution requires that "the supervision of schools in each school division shall be vested in a school board." Worse, past court decisions have given local school boards nearly unfettered control over buildings, budgets, curriculum, and personnel - even if they run it into the ground.
To its credit, the State Board of Education's proposed new regulations ratchet up the consequences for non-performing schools and school divisions, including the threat of withholding a limited amount of state funding. But the process is long, case by case and thin gruel compared with the dramatic and decisive action so badly needed. Besides which, "state takeovers" have a spotty track record -- partly because states rarely take the time to rebuild school culture.
One alternative is to authorize new quality public schools run by successful educators, but outside the traditional system. And there are such schools defying the "demography is destiny" mantra. The problem: They aren't in Virginia.
Today, 7,000 public charter schools serve 3 million students. While not a panacea, their track record with low-income children is striking: According to Stanford's Center for Research on Education Outcomes (CREDO), after four years in a charter school, urban students learn 50 percent more per year than demographically similar students in traditional public schools.
In New York, 95 percent of Success Academy's students are children of color whose families have an average income of $32,000 per year. In math, 95 percent of them passed the state exams and 84 percent passed reading, outperforming every school district in the state, including those with median family incomes of $290,000.
KIPP Academies educates 88,000 students in 209 schools - 95 percent of them black or Latino and 88 percent of them on Free and Reduced Meals subsidies. Eighty-one percent enter college and they graduate college at a pace four times the rate of their peers.
But these and other successful charter schools won't come to Virginia, citing the Commonwealth's "restrictive charter school law that limits autonomy and makes it impossible for high quality charter schools to fulfill their mission." And without alternatives, parents will never be able to send their children to a public charter school opening the doors of opportunity for Virginia's neediest students.
A measure earlier this year might have cracked that door a bit, had it been signed into law. It would have allowed the State Board of Education to authorize a new school board - an overlay of sorts - that could only target areas with one or more schools that repeatedly failed accreditation.
And while it would not have touched existing schools or local funding, it would have empowered the State Board to meet its own constitutional responsibility for the "supervision of the public school system," taken steps toward the constitutional aspiration of "an educational program of high quality," and helped several thousand low-income children who now have no quality choices.
Sadly, the bill was vetoed by Governor McAuliffe, shooting down educational justice for the children of places like Petersburg, Norfolk and Newport News.
As the voters who place a premium on K-12 education think about the issues, they should consider this: The parents of children in high-performing schools are rarely concerned about choices: They've already made theirs.
But how long must the parents of children in persistently low-performing schools wait to have better opportunities for their child? Four years? Six? A dozen years? How long?

By J.C. Hernandez
Hernandez is Virginia state director at Americans for Prosperity.
The U.S. Census Bureau just released its latest numbers on median household income, both nationally and across all 50 states. The news isn’t good for Virginia. In fact, it’s downright lousy.
From 2014 to 2016 — the first three years of Gov. Terry McAuliffe and Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam’s terms — the median household income increased nationally by $3,825 but declined by $1,459 in Virginia. Virginians are poorer — much poorer — than they were just a few years ago.
That’s bad enough, but this will make it sting a little more: In neighboring Tennessee, North Carolina, and Maryland the median household income increased by — are you ready for this? — $6,665, $6,019, and $2,299 respectively.
So over those few years the median household in Tennessee did more than $8,000 better than one in Virginia. $8,000! Just imagine the difference $8,000 a year could make in the lives of so many families in Virginia.
Even West Virginia, historically a weak economy, did better than us by essentially breaking even (median household income down $24). In fact, only a handful of states had bigger drops than Virginia – we were ranked 44.
It is time to face facts — our commonwealth is in a disturbing backward drift.
For many years before McAuliffe and Northam took office, Virginia was viewed as an economic leader nationally. Now we are headed in the wrong direction.
In 2013, the commonwealth was No. 1 on Forbes’ list of best places in America to do business. We’ve since slipped to No. 6, with North Carolina overtaking us. Forbes cites Virginia’s “higher business costs and a declining economic climate” for the drop. It’s not just Forbes. Chief Executive magazine dropped Virginia from No. 7 in 2013 to No. 15 now.
Given the growing negative perception of Virginia’s economic climate, it is no surprise we are losing ground to surrounding states on other important measures that get to the overall health of our commonwealth.
For example, Virginia lags behind our neighbors not just in income, but in job growth, too. We are adding jobs in Virginia at a slower rate than Tennessee, North Carolina, and Maryland. Equally worrisome is that more people are leaving Virginia for other states than are moving in.
And make no mistake, our neighbors aren’t standing still; they are changing policies to compete for businesses looking to relocate or entrepreneurs looking to get their start. Just look at what has happened in North Carolina, which in a decade went from the middle of the pack to one of the best places in America to do business, capturing the No. 2 spot in Forbes’ rankings.
The “Carolina Comeback” was accomplished by cutting taxes, reducing government spending, and curbing regulations. That’s the direction Virginia should be headed; but that’s not the agenda being pushed by Northam. His record of support for higher taxes and higher spending would continue moving Virginia backward — slower economic growth, a stagnant job market, lower incomes, and declining population.
Virginia needs bold leadership and a change of direction to lift us out of our slump. By his own admission, Northam represents the status quo. It’s time to try something different.

Virginia Legislators - It's Your Job. Do It!
"The government of the Commonwealth of Virginia and the city of Charlottesville failed miserably by any measure."
Often doing the right thing is the hardest thing to do. Especially for politicians.
However, the disastrous turn of events in Charlottesville on August 12th which ended in the death of a young Virginia resident, Heather Heyer, demands justice, regardless of the cost.
That justice for Ms. Heyer and the citizens of Virginia requires the facts, the truth.
Obviously, the court system in Charlottesville will determine the guilt or innocence of the Ohio man, James Fields, who was arrested and charged with the second degree murder with a motor vehicle of Ms. Heyer. But, that will be only a portion of justice for Ms. Heyer's life, and no justice at all for the citizens of Virginia.
Watching the process unfold so far, it is hard to see how the full, un-politicized facts of the complete breakdown of law and order can be forthcoming. The obviously poor management of the police force on hand, which evidently far exceeded the number of violent demonstrators, and the mismanagement and misjudgments of the responsible elected officials cannot be determined by those same individuals.
Quite the contrary, in the ongoing back and forth between the various parties involved, the Governor, and the sensationalized national media reporting, it seems unlikely that the truth can be salvaged unless the Virginia Legislature takes a bold and pre-emptive stand for the truth.
The facts as they now exist demand that the Virginia General Assembly, or the Virginia Senate, immediately establish a bipartisan committee to begin an immediate, targeted, narrowly focused investigation where sworn testimony and records can be subpoenaed from responsible state government officials up to and including Brian Moran, the Secretary of Public Safety, and including the leadership in the Virginia State Police from the Superintendent down to the on-site commanders and Troopers in Charlottesville; and the Mayor of Charlottesville, the Police Chief of the Charlottesville Police Department and commanding officers, and others who may have been involved in issuing permits for demonstrations that day.
Not only does this legislative committee need to be established and held immediately to protect records and secure the testimony of subordinate personnel in both Charlottesville and Richmond, but its hearings must be succinct and limited to days, and not allowed to stretch out into weeks or months, where ambiguity and self-protection replace truth-finding.
This type of open, short, focused inquiry is imperative so that the citizens of the Commonwealth can have restored faith that public safety and the rule of law is the governments most important responsibility and priority, and above politics.
This committee's investigative charge must be to establish the truth in as simple, straightforward and non-political manner as possible.
The committee should determine how the permitting procedure worked for the event, and which group or groups had what permits for what venue and for what times? Who specifically was involved in the permitting and what officials were involved in the approvals that were issued? Were there permits to any group for Waters Street, where Heather Heyer was killed Saturday afternoon?
In planning for the Charlottesville demonstration, since there was substantial lead time between the permitting and August 12th, what state and what local agencies were involved and who had primary responsibility? When was the final plan formalized? In the final plan, who was authorized to make command decisions in the field to insure public safety? What role did the Mayor and Police Chief of the Charlottesville PD have in the planning and subsequent approval of the planning? What role did the Governor or his designee have? Were there specific planning procedures that foresaw keeping protesters and possible counter-protesters separated? Were there plans in place for physical barriers and auto barriers and plans for the protection of foot traffic?
During the actual protest and the counter-protest, where was the Governor and the Secretary for Public Safety and when and how did they arrive in Charlottesville? How many Virginia State Troopers were in Charlottesville, and where specifically were they stationed or assembled, and who specifically had command over them and their deployment? When and who made the decision to declare the demonstration at Emancipation Park unlawful? Who was responsible for the method of crowd disbursement? What was the basis for that decision and what steps were taken to keep the demonstrators separated? After the crowds were ordered to leave, what steps were taken later in the afternoon to control the crowds still in the area, and who made the decision not to move or interfere with those counter-protesters in the immediate area?
The primary function of any government is the protection of individual liberties and safety of its citizens. The government of the Commonwealth of Virginia and the city of Charlottesville failed miserably by any measure. The Charlottesville Police and the State Police failed miserably. The political leadership failed miserably.
Instead of blowing this event off, or allowing it to be captured by interminable investigations by various nameless and faceless functionaries, the citizen's representatives in Richmond must make a bold, immediate, and clear example of good government in action.
Every concerned citizen in Virginia should be contacting their state delegate and State Senator, with a clear message:
Legislators, it's your job. Do it now!

Any such concerns should be directed to the appropriate school principal or other school official. Citizens are encouraged to write the School Board on any school-related topic.
• The meeting will conclude when all interested attendees have had a chance to speak.
Next Steps and Questions
Saturday, September 16, 2017, J.E.B. Stuart High School Cafeteria – VOTING – 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Voting is limited to residents of the J.E.B. Stuart High School attendance area as per Regulation 8170.7. Voting is open between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.
Voters will need to check in and provide identification to verify they are current residents of the attendance area. Similar to what is accepted when registering a student for school, FCPS will accept Virginia driver’s license, utility bill, payroll stub, official correspondence, lease, or student ID for students as proof of residence for voting.
Only one person per household in the attendance area is permitted to vote. Voters will be allowed one vote for the first choice name, one vote for the second choice name, and one vote for the third choice name from the list solicited at the September 9 meeting. Detailed and translated directions will be provided to all voters.
A weighted point system will be used to determine the top three choices. First choice will be awarded three points, second choice two points, and third choice one point.
Results will not be communicated to the public on September 16, but will be made public prior to the Superintendent’s recommendation to the School Board. Dr. Brabrand will use the results of the voting to make a recommendation consisting of one or more of the most popular choices to the School Board for consideration and action.
