π Meet Demario Moore, a BBA in General Business (MyPath) student and a proud PepsiCo employee. He started his program in April, completed over 75 credits, and is set to finish his program this month! MyPath is UMass Global's Competency-Based Education program, which allows you to work through your coursework on your schedule without set deadlines. Read on for his CBE program experience.
"I think this program is perfect for older working adults. As someone who has dropped out of multiple colleges, this was the first time I could see the finish line from the start. I couldn't even imagine returning to sitting in a classroom at 40.
My job situation might not be the normβI start work at 3 AM and return home by 9 AM. But I believe I'd be just as successful in this program if I worked a 9-5. In traditional college settings, it's easy to feel overwhelmed with weekly deadlines and mandatory seminars. One failed class can make it feel like you'll never graduate.
The best thing about this program is that it allows you to work at your own pace. The more effort you put in, the faster you get to that degree."
β We're so proud of Demario's journey! Celebrate his accomplishments by throwing confetti in the comments! π

The Speechβ¬οΈ
According to Merriam-Webster, adversity is a word that comes from the Middle English word "adversite," which means opposition, hostility, misfortune, or hardship. In simpler terms, it refers to a problematic or unlucky situation or event. Conversely, perseverance means the continued effort to achieve something despite difficulties, failure, or opposition. It refers to someone who persists in reaching their goals, even when it is challenging or takes a long time. This class embodies these two concepts.
Like many of my fellow graduates, I am not your traditional college student. My journey to this day began almost two decades ago, and I was never sure it would come. My story is similar to many of you sitting here today β parents and spouses who faced enormous challenges and setbacks while striving to succeed. My story started when I became a mother at just eighteen. Today, that "baby" is eighteen herself and in the stands to cheer me on.
My road to a bachelor's degree began in 2006. However, the expectations of raising a baby as an eighteen-year-old single mother and attending college did not align. I chose to put being a mother first. Later, I married, had another child, and returned to that same university, but my troubled personal life bled into my education. I made choices I wished I could take back and faced academic consequences that still follow me today.
After struggling so profoundly, I almost accepted that completing a degree would never happen. I became a single mother again, trying to do the best for my two young children. Any parent here knows we make mistakes on that journey. It was the lowest I had ever been, and I felt like a failure on all accounts. In 2017, my family's lives would change forever. As I had given up on just about everything except my children, I met the man I now proudly call my husband, who is also in the stands today. Our story is similar to many military couples β a whirlwind of a love story all in ten months. During the summer of 2018, we moved to San Diego, and nothing has been the same.
For the majority of my life, I went undiagnosed with mental illness. It was not until moving to San Diego in my thirties that a diagnosis and treatment began. For anyone in the crowd today struggling with mental illness or trying to support a loved one with mental illness, you are not alone. Even in 2024, there is still a stigma around mental health, and there is too little help. Undoubtedly, I would not be here today without the support of my mother, my husband, my oldest son, and my oldest daughter, along with the treatment from some of the most amazing doctors and therapists in San Diego. Receiving treatment led me to this very day, and it brought me a love of Psychology I never had before. It is strange how life can be a revolving door. Where I started in 2006 turned into where I ended up because of the people in my life and my drive to help others.
I received an Associate's in Psychology from Southwestern College in Chula Vista, CA, in May 2022. Today, I stand before you as a graduate of UMass Global with a Bachelor's in Psychology. I will enter graduate school in the fall at Loyola University Chicago for a Master's in Social Work. I hope to work with our military community β active duty, veterans, and their families β as they navigate the challenging world of the military and everything that comes with it. My main goal is to provide support and compassion in a judgment-free environment for everyone to embrace who they are and who they love and ask for help when needed.
To UMass Global: Thank you for helping me achieve my dream of standing on a stage to get a bachelor's degree. Thank you for not seeing just a number on a GPA scale; thank you for trusting that I would make this university proud for accepting me. Thank you for having top-notch professors who take their time to get to know their students β especially in an online forum β and support them when needed. I am a better writer because of the UMass liberal arts curriculum. I will be a better counselor because UMass provided an outstanding degree plan with appropriate courses to set me up for success.
In closing, there is always time to become who you want to be. In the moment, it may feel dark and lonely and maybe even scary. However, one day, someone gives you a chance. Someone believes in you. And before you know it, you are standing on top of the world, which is how I feel right now. Persevere in the face of adversity. Never, ever give up. Thank you to all the friends and family here today supporting us in our journeys β no matter how short or long that journey was. And thank you, UMass Global, for paving the road and giving us a chance to prove that we belonged. Congratulations, class of 2024!
Have a safe and enjoyable 4th of July. Offices closed July 4 and 5.

The Grad β‘οΈ Dr. Christina LeAnn Gfell, Ed.D in Organizational Leadership
The Speech β¬οΈ
Dear graduates, faculty members, and honored guests,
I have waited four years to say this⦠HELLO DOCTORS!
Today is a significant milestone in our lives as we come together to celebrate the culmination of years of hard work, dedication, and perseverance. As we stand on the brink of a new chapter in our lives, we cannot help but feel a sense of pride and accomplishment for earning our doctoral degrees.
This journey has not been easy. We have faced countless challenges, setbacks, and obstacles along the way. But we have also experienced moments of joy, success, and personal growth that have shaped us into the individuals we are today.
When we first met our fellow cohort members, we were all strangers embarking on this winding path of the doctoral program. There were several hurdles right out from the gate, navigating Blackboard, CAGβs, and EDOL 750, Oh My! I personally remember thinking, how hard can 300 words be with 5 references? Not a problem, you got this, Christina. (pause) I have never cried like I did on that first paper. It was one of the hardest papers I have written, but it led to the bond of our cohort becoming a family. We relied on each other to get through those first classes, confided in one another, and formed a family in the three years we were together. To my Goonie family, thank you. Each of you brought your own personal strengths, and we found our stride together. I will forever be grateful for each one of you.
As we reflect on our time here, we must acknowledge the support and guidance of our mentors, advisors, and loved ones who have stood by us through thick and thin. Their wisdom, encouragement, and belief in us have been instrumental in helping us reach this point. The countless βtherapy sessionsβ from my cohort mentor Dr. Giokaris, kept me focused, determined, and allowed me to cry when I needed to and laugh at the little things. And Dr. Ainsworth, my chair, thank you for never giving up on me. Your kindness and encouragement led to the success of my dissertation.
Mom and Dad, thank you for believing in me, loving me, and supporting me. My sons sacrificed time with me, three summers of no trips, lots of dinners without me, but as a single mom, they supported me more than they could ever know. I love you, Rylan and Caed, thank you. My grandma encouraged me and was so proud of me for working towards this degree. My biggest goal was to have her here to watch me graduate. She may not be here in person, but I know she is here, so proud at this moment. I did it, grandma!
But today is not just about looking back on the past; it is also about looking ahead to the future. As we move forward into the next phase of our lives, we have the opportunity to make a difference in the world, to contribute our knowledge and skills to our fields of study, and to inspire others to achieve their own dreams.
So let us go forth with courage, determination, and a sense of purpose. Let us continue to push the boundaries of knowledge, to ask the tough questions, and to seek solutions to the complex problems facing our world.
Congratulations, graduates. We have earned the right to be called doctors. Let us embrace this title with humility, gratitude, and a commitment to excellence in all that we do. Thank you, and may we continue to strive for greatness in all our future endeavors.

Meet LaShanda & Sapphire Cabasug, two incredible women with a shared passion for making a difference in the world. π
π What inspired you to pursue a master's degree?
LaShanda dreamed of getting her master's at UMass Global. The same month the MSW accreditation happened, her mother passed away. "In our last conversation, she told me how proud she was of me for wanting to become a social worker. Her words inspired me to pursue my dream in her memory."
π What was it like attending UMass Global together?
Attending UMass Global with a significant other was an incredible journey! They balanced planning their wedding with their studies. "We made sacrifices and missed out on things because we were committed to bettering ourselves" And their future together. Both experienced the foster system and deeply love working with children. "We want to give back and be the voice for those who feel unheard."
π What societal issues are you both most passionate about addressing through your work?

UMass Global pays tribute to Juneteenth, which celebrates African Americans' emancipation several years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863. Enslaved people living in Texas learned of slavery's defeat on June 19, 1865, and in the years after that, freed people established the tradition of singling out June 19 to celebrate emancipation.
Being aware of history is necessary to foster a spirit of reconciliation and healing that motivates us to strive for a better nation for all people.
Juneteenth events are planned for several communities where UMass Global has important relationships with students and colleagues. Several events are listed below, and readers may learn of additional events via community message boards, local news sources, or social media.
