Life changes. "Adapt. Persist. Thrive."
This has been the hallmark of our lives recently, and, if you think of it, this has always been the case.
Cape Cod MOVES will be ending as a company. The MOVES board voted on this today. It will be an end, but not the end. Here is the plan going forward:
1.) We will offer Falmouth in the Fall back to Don Facey, who was the loving Race Director for many years. If this does not happen then we will consult MOVES members who know and love the race and will find a good caretaker for the race going forward. We will announce this as we know more.
2.) We will be ending the Cape Cod MOVES "Y-Not" Trail Race. It was not going to be held in 2020 due to COVID.
3.) We will be maintaining Cape Cod MOVES as a "club." This will evolve as the days go forward. The general idea is to continue to keep people moving, to do volunteer work, to be grateful and positive in the world and to move forward. We will maintain a Face Book and email presence. We are not sure about a website presence yet, but would like to work to keep that going.
4.) MOVES has to do the legal things involved in disbanding the company which means selling off assets. We will be donating monies to some of the nonprofits who we have supported since we came together as Cape Cod MOVES. These will be specifically named we we go forward. The items for sale will be provided as we move forward.
What does this mean to you?
1.) If you want to stay on the email list you do not have to do anything. I intend to continue to provide motivation and to share positive things that are occurring in the world. If you want off, just tell me.
2.) Things like the Winter Warrior team will continue to be offered by me. Clean ups, volunteer activities, motion activities and more will be decided as things move forward by the individuals who have been or want to be involved. Due to COVID there are no track workouts or supported beginner workouts occurring anyway.
3.) MOVES coaches may be exploring the idea of offering coaching on their own. It is possible to get coaching insurance. This will be up to the individuals.
4.) MOVES members who paid dues for 2020 have two options. One would be to allow these monies to remain with MOVES and be donated out. If you would like a refund then a 50 percent refund will be available upon request. Please tell us if you would like a refund before June 30, 2020.
5.) MOVES members who have not received their annual shirts due to COVID can contact me. I am happy to meet you, or to have you pick it up from my office (West Barnstable) or my home (Hatchville) respecting social distancing.
6.) I intend to take the time to share many memories from the past as we move forward. I wish we could have a "get together" to celebrate. This is a celebration because so much positive has occurred.
Special thanks to Kelli Dottridge for her inspiration to continue MOVES as a club. This will enable us to use the logo and name as we move forward.
There are too many things to talk through in this note. I wanted you to know from me, rather than to hear this anecdotally. I can tell you that we all tried extremely hard to make Cape Cod MOVES a viable nonprofit. We learned a lot. We accomplished so much. The details of this will be shared as we move forward and can remember all of these wonderful things.
I am proud of so many people and so many things. There are just too many to name right now. Know that we are happy with the outcome.
We tried. We accomplished a great deal. More can continue that is positive. That is a good way to go through life.
With love and for blessings along the path...
Carl
The "Y-Not" Trail Race has been cancelled. Thank you for your support for all of the miles so far! We are sorry. We thought about the children at the event, the volunteers, the runners and did not feel we had a road map for making this a safe event at this time. Please keep MOVING and stay in touch with Cape Cod MOVES! We are hopeful that "Falmouth in the Fall" on November 1st will happen. It is not open for registration yet.
New ideas are percolating to keep going! IM Carl for details!
How about this? Wow!

It is almost Spring!
Tomorrow is Spring! Please join us starting tomorrow for the "Finding the Positive Challenge!"
Cost: Zero
Who Can Enter: Only positive people!
What do I do?
From when you start until May 1st...
1.) Every day MOVE.
a.) What can you count? Walking, running, hiking, biking, swimming, weightlifting, Pilates, yoga,...you get the message. You set the activity!
2.) You judge yourself on whether you had an Exercise Easy (Code EE), Exercise Moderate (Code EM) or Exercise Hard (Code EH). If you start the challenge at the Advanced level try to keep up that level of effort from yourself every day until May 1st! If you drop down to Moderate then try to sustain that level.
3.) You can substitute a day where you do something to HELP OTHERS as a day of activity. If you do a volunteer activity or thing you can put (Code V) for Volunteer.
What would count for volunteering? Anything! You know when you help someone or do something nice! Spend some time cleaning up a street, a beach or a park. Find positive things to email or write to people you know. Send a motivation to me to send around or post on one our Face Book page for this. It is called Message Board (more on this below). Anything positive that helps others or the Earth!
4.) If you do both in one day, exercise and volunteer then code EV (Exercise and Volunteer).
5.) If you are not moving and do not help anyone else for a day then you are out of the challenge.
You should try to start the next day and log your activities and get back on board! TRY to get another streak going and keep it going!
LOGGING:
Lindsay worked with Sandra for this Google Sheet. Use it to log your activities. If you cannot navigate this keep track of what you are doing and email it to me. I can do it for you until we get you squared away!

Today only...half off the Winter Challenge Registration fee! Code: BLACKFRIDAY. Please join our team: Ice Cold Cape MOVES when you register! We have a lot of fun all month! Exercise daily in January! Fight cancer. Get Healthy!
DIFFERENT LEVELS AVAILABLE TO CHALLENGE EVERYONE!
You can challenge yourself to any level, and can change your mind at anytime because you don’t have to indicate the level when signing up. You can start on a higher level, and drop down to a lower level if you can’t hit the daily mileage. But, if you miss a day, you’re out!
— Bronze: at least 1 mile/day
— Silver: at least 3 miles/day
— Gold: at least 5 miles/day
— Winter Warrior: at least 1 mile/day outdoors
For each level, you must run the minimum mileage every day, not just averaging that mileage. So if you run 5+ miles for 30 days, and 1 mile for 1 day, you will finish at the Bronze Level due to that 1 day of lower mileage. Each level is determined by your actual daily mileage, not your average daily mileage.
100% OF PROCEEDS TO CHARITY!

This is one of the speakers from the “Why I MOVE” Plant-Based dinner the night before the “Y-Not” race and expo. I am so grateful to know Ava.
She was also the race overall winner at the 5K!
Hello I’m Ava Bullock,
And I would like to share with you today why I like to move and how I got where I am today. I started running when I was seven and I wasn’t affiliated with any particular running club or group. Eventually, I started running with the Barnstable Rec program. That led to road races which were mostly 5Ks. I joined a running club called Riptide Running two years ago. Riptide Running practices took place over the summer. We did long and short runs. I have been swimming with Cape Cod Swim Club, which also helped with my athletic ability. In the fall of 2018 I qualified for Junior Olympics in Cross Country and made it all the way to the Nationals in Reno, Nevada.
A friend suggested that I could try triathlons. So I did. My first triathlon was Hyannis 1 at Craigville Beach. I loved the sprint triathlon so much that I participated in Kids Triathlon at MIT during the summer and competed in a very hilly Pilgrim Man in Plymouth in September.
I ran the Y-not Trail race last year and enjoyed it so much I came back to repeat it this year. I love to run because it puts me in a good physical and mental shape. Also, I enjoy the company of other runners because it creates my own positive community. I always like to be challenged and enjoy the competition element of running. As a result, I made a lot of good friends and met a lot of different, interesting people.
Here is Cape Cod MOVES next race...Falmouth in the Fall!
Thanks to sponsors:
Hanlon’s Shoes, Cape Cod Five (race sponsor), Hartel Real Estate (bib sponsor), Harborview Restaurant (eight gift cards of $25 each), the Island Queen (a round trip ticket for two) and Steve’s Pizza (a gift card for $20 and one for $30).
Male and Female Race Overall Winners will receive a free pair of running shoes from Hanlon’s! 2nd and 3rd place male and female winners will receive gift cards for $25 from Hanlon’s. The remainder of the gift cards will be given out, at random, to runners. You do not have to be present to win!
Hi Norm and Carl,
You and Carl and the whole crew made this one of the most friendly and welcoming race I’ve done. Carl reassuringly answered all of my first-timer questions this morning even in the midst of his busy morning. This was my first 50k, and it will not be my last! Aside from needing to take three long breaks to ice my knee, the race went well and I thoroughly enjoyed the day.
Thank you! Tara Driscoll
