ACE Academy continues to improve

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. –

The Fayetteville Regional Airport (FAY) held its third annual Aviation Career Education “Ace” Academy on Aug. 5 and 6. A North Carolina Department of Transportation grant
and donated time and materials from speakers, pilots, and tenants at FAY made this the most successful year of the program.

“This program continues to excel each year,” said Interim Airport Director Deontae Watson. “Bringing aviation to the next generation is not only rewarding, but also inspiring. We are in the presence of future private, commercial, and military pilots.”

Thirty-Five students from across the region, ranging in ages from 11 to 17 experienced “Discovery Flights” held by Cape Fear Aviation and Raleigh Professional Flight School. Some students were even able to fly the plane with guidance from a certified flight instructor. Their flight time was logged and will be counted as training hours to gain a pilot’s license.

The ACE students were also exposed to different facets of aviation, and potential career opportunities. Piedmont Airlines spoke with students about the pilot shortage impacting the country, and how they could gain their license to be a part of the next generation of pilots. Other institutions such as Civil Air Patrol, the NCDOT Division of Aviation, and the Sierra Nevada Company participated in the two-day program.

If awarded the NCDOT grant again in 2025, applications for the next ACE Academy would be projected to open on FlyFay.com in May of 2025.

‼️ What you need to know: City of Fayetteville Tropical Storm Debby - Aug. 8 Update ‼️

As Tropical Storm Debby moves over central North Carolina, the City of Fayetteville expects continued rain occurring overnight. Residents can expect continued flooding in some areas across the city.

Residents are urged to pay attention to alerts and to seek alternate shelter in the event of flooding in their area.

City Hall will remain open for regular business on Friday. Residents are encouraged to call ahead to determine if services can be completed online and avoid travel until conditions return to normal. Residents are also advised to call 910-600-7299 for non-emergency inquiries and transportation assistance to shelters.

For emergencies, call 911.

In response to the impending storm, the City of Fayetteville has been working closely with Cumberland County who opened several emergency shelters. The shelters include:
➡️ Westover Recreation Center (pet friendly)
➡️ Southview High School (pet friendly)
➡️ Pine Forest High School
➡️ Smith Recreation Center - Will close at 9 a.m. on Friday

Fayetteville Area System of Transit (FAST) will provide transportation to the shelters, ensuring that those in need within city limits can reach a safe place. FAST Services will open and operate on normal schedule tomorrow, Aug. 9. The following routes are still on detour as of Aug. 8:
➡️ Route 4
➡️ Route 18
➡️ Route 10
➡️ Route 19
All other routes have returned to normal service.

The Hay and Franklin Streets Parking Decks will be opened for city vehicle storage, with gates remaining open. Fees will resume at 10 a.m. on Friday.

On-street parking enforcement will resume at 10 a.m. on Friday.

The Cape Fear River water levels are expected to peak at 53.6 feet on Saturday morning according to https://fiman.nc.gov/. Swift water rescue teams are strategically positioned across the county to assist with water rescue calls. The public safety teams are ready to respond to any emergencies that may arise. NCDOT and the City have strategically placed barriers and sandbags in areas that have historically been impacted by flood waters.

Fayetteville’s Stormwater and Streets Divisions are closely monitoring road conditions across the City.

Avoid roads that are closed.

Barriers will be removed when it is determined that the roadway is no longer at risk of flooding. Drivers should avoid travel until the storm has safely passed. Please exercise caution, especially in areas known to flood. A flooded street might appear harmless but there is no way to tell how deep the water is. Turn around, don’t drown.

Drivers should be aware that there are still roads that have been impacted by downed power lines and fallen trees. Please report downed power lines, fallen trees, and other safety issues, to the non-emergency phone number at 910-600-7299. In the event of an emergency, please call 911.
