Congratulations to Jordan Baumberger, one of sixteen greeted and congratulated on the Razorbug Diploma Tour, a traveling celebration around the state to highlight the accomplishments of students who studied online for a degree.

The presentation took place June 18 at the Entergy facility on the banks of Lake Dardanelle in front of the cooling tower of Arkansas Nuclear One. Arkansas Nuclear One supplies power to 730,000 customers in 63 counties in Arkansas.

Baumberger earned his mechanical engineering bachelor's degree from the U of A in 2009 and went to work for Entergy. He initially enrolled in the graduate certificate in project management offered online by the College of Engineering in 2018 because he wanted to make a change in his career path. He used the hours he took for the project management graduate certificate to fulfill classroom training requirements to receive a Project Management Professional certification from the Project Management Institute, an international credentialing body. He was promoted to senior project manager in 2020 with both the PMP certificate and the U of A certificate in hand.

Sandra Eksioglu, associate dean for research in the College of Engineering and Mary Savin, head of the horticulture department brought together faculty from both colleges, providing them with a platform to network, share research and form teams aimed at pursuing external funding. Next, they established the Engineering Applications in Agriculture program, an internal seed funding program, to support the newly formed teams.

Five winning teams in the first Engineering Applications in Agriculture program were awarded $25,000 each to carry out their projects. Over the next year, theyโ€™ll conduct research to put their ideas into action.

โ€œWhen the teams later submit their work to the National Science Foundation, or the U.S. Department of Agriculture, they will be better positioned to make a compelling case and have a higher chance of receiving funding,โ€ said Eksioglu.

Did you know that faculty from the College of Engineering and Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences recently met to discuss integrating engineering concepts into calculus classes?

With a shared goal of helping our students be more successful and keeping our 150 Forward strategic plan top-of-mind, Korth initiated the session by outlining two goals: fostering new collaborations and developing calculus problems with engineering applications.

โ€œWe aimed to create engaging assignments that resonate with students,โ€ Korth said. โ€œWhen students encounter relevant applications, the information becomes more meaningful and accessible, leading to greater achievement.โ€

NASA awarded an EPSCoR grant worth $750,000 to the "III-Nitride Ultraviolet Laser Diodes for Harsh Environments, Space-Based Communications, and Remote Sensing" project. The initiative focuses on enhancing high-data-rate communications between satellites and Earth, particularly for deep space missions.

Morgan Ware of University of Arkansas Electrical Engineering and Computer Science serves as the lead scientific investigator for the project.

The long-term focus is on advancing communications technology in advanced semiconductor research, which spans multiple scientific disciplines and industries.
If successful, the technology could greatly speed up satellite-to-satellite or deep space communications. According to Ware, "there is a growing need for high data transfer rates from very distant systems. Having the capability to watch pseudo-live video feed from the Mars rovers, for example, would make future explorations there significantly more productive."

Happy first day of summer!

06/19/2024

Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865 when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas to inform the slaves of their freedom, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
Although it was only recently recognized as a federal holiday by the U.S. government, this has been a day of celebration and reflection in communities across the world for over 100 years.
Today, we take time to honor the struggles, essential contributions, and diverse experiences of the African American community members.

Congratulations to Younghye Song, assistant professor of biomedical engineering in the U of A's College of Engineering! Song has recently been awarded a $2.5 million National Institutes of Health R37 grant from the National Cancer Institute to investigate the role of metabolic rewiring in breast tumor innervation.

"This R37 award allows my lab to dive deeper into understanding breast tumor innervation, which has been linked to worse prognosis with higher rates of metastasis," Song said. "We aim to use tissue engineering approaches and resources available at the Arkansas Integrative Metabolic Research Center (AIMRC) to understand better why more nerve fibers are seen in aggressive breast tumors, and how we can use this understanding to develop new therapeutic strategies to curb metastatic progression.
