This beautiful patient came in for a consultation to see what could be done about her deep forehead lines. She knew neurotoxin wasn’t the answer so she wasn’t surprised when I agreed with her. Laser resurfacing with Co2 along with medical grade skincare was the first thing we did to wipe the slate clean. After Co2 resurfacing, we proceeded with neurotoxin and recommended she keep up with this every 3-4 months from here on out for preventative measures.

We prefer to use neurotoxin treatments as a preventative treatment, not a corrective treatment. The earlier you start, the better. As you can see in these before and afters, the Co2 also removed a significant amount of sun damage. In the last picture, you can see her two-week neurotoxin results in comparison to no treatments at all. Her results are going to continue to improve as she is only 6 weeks out from deep Co2.

The cosmetic and beauty industry is continuously growing and evolving. Med spas around the world saw unprecedented upticks in sales and treatments performed following the COVID-19 pandemic. Social media can also be credited for more people now receiving these types of services.

With the current demand for aesthetic treatments and services, there has been a rise in non-medical, “lay” people, wanting to offer these services. I wanted to touch on a few red flags that should make you think twice before receiving injectable treatments.

🚩 No medical background

- In North Carolina, injectable treatments (anything injected into the face or body- ‘tox, filler, Kybella, PRP, etc.), can ONLY be administered by a licensed medical provider. At minimum in NC, the provider must be a registered nurse. Estheticians are not legally allowed to perform injections of any kind. Verify that your provider has a valid medical license before receiving any type of injectable treatment from them. I get asked a lot if I am an esthetician because I perform “beauty” treatments but I am in fact a board certified family nurse practitioner. Injectables are considered prescriptions and someone with out a medical license cannot legally “prescribe” injectables.

🚩 Huge price difference

- If someone is offering injectables for a significantly different price, walk away. As tempting as it may sound, this is a major red flag. If I charge $4500-6000 for a or BBL and someone else is asking less than $1000, this is 99.9% due to the fact that they are not using real products (see more below). If it sounds too good to be true, it is!
