The Birth - Kindergarten faculty and the Jean Tyson Child Development Study Center had a great time hosting students from Springdale High School last week! These high schoolers got to hear from Dr. Laura Herold about the Birth - Kindergarten major, including opportunities for scholarships and our 2+2 advising agreement with NWACC. They got to tour the JTCDSC and learn about high quality early childhood education - and how our lab school functions as a place for observation, practicums, and research. Then, they got to engage in hands-on experiences with the materials and environments at the center, guided by JTCDSC administrative staff and educators. It was lots of fun watching these high schoolers remember how to make forts with boxes, build ramps to move a ball from one place to another, and tinker and play with loose parts.
Our graduate students will be presenting their research today at the International Connections Lounge 12-2 p.m. Come on by!
Congratulations to our seniors who will graduate next month with the Birth through Kindergarten/Special Education teaching license and are accepting teaching positions!
Here is a little more about one graduating senior, Dorothy Collier.
"Hi, my name is Dorothy Collier and my major is Birth through Kindergarten/Special Education integrated with a double minor in Spanish and Human Development and Family Sciences. I chose the Birth through Kindergarten program because I absolutely love children! Since I was in elementary school, I knew that I wanted to be a teacher and I knew I gravitated toward younger children. I absolutely love caring for them, teaching them, and aiding them in building the foundational skills they need for their future. I am elated to have accepted a Preschool teaching position at a school in my hometown, Frisco, Texas.
"I absolutely loved every second of the B-K program! Building relationships with the children at the Jean Tyson Child Development Study Center and the children at the schools where I interned were some of my favorite memories of the program. I particularly loved creating and implementing developmentally appropriate lesson plans. I owe it to the B-K program and professors such as Dr. Herold, Dr. Speight, and Senior Instructor Donia Timby for my knowledge and love for early childhood development. I hope to continue learning every day. My experience here at Arkansas has laid the foundation for me to be the best teacher I can be for my future students."

Construction began last week on a major playground upgrade at the Jean Tyson Child Development Study Center on the U of A campus.
Funded primarily through several grants written by Shelley McNally, clinical associate professor and executive director of education programs at the JTCDSC, the development of the project began two years ago.
Initiated with a child's intense conversation with McNally regarding "problems on the playground," JTCDSC educators challenged children to design a playground featuring "something to do."
