Math tools! Each student has a pencil bag of math tools. I allow them to use their tools anytime they are working on an assignment. I love seeing the tools each student tends to use most.
During our first week of school each class is required to write a mission statement.
We started with reading Our Class is a Family on Monday.
Tuesday, we reread the story and created a circle map brainstorming ideas on what our class mission would be.
Wednesday, students worked in teams to each write one sentence using one of the key words we brainstormed the day before. That night I typed up some of their sentences, print and cut them out.
Thursday, teams organized those sentences in the order they thought our mission statement should read.
Friday, I shared the mission statement and all students signed. They came up with a great mission statement!

Working on your February plans? Add this story to your literacy unit! Freedom on the Menu: The Greensboro Sit-Ins by Carole Boston Weatherford is a fabulous mentor text and a wonderful example of Historical Fiction. This excellent text has a powerful message and is a wonderful picture book to use when teaching about segregation, civil rights movement, and events for Black History Month. Grab my literacy pack of activities and resources that will engage your students and get them to dig deeper into the text.
