So beautifully said by The Rev. Tammy Lee in Beaufort, NC. As we are all heartbroken for the families of the souls lost in the crash including the Parks family here in Fayetteville.

So many in our city are affected by the deployments at Ft. Bragg as well and we are praying for the care of our soldiers and their families. "Almighty God, we commend to your gracious care and keeping all the men and women of our armed forces at home and abroad. Defend them day by day with your heavenly grace; strengthen them in their trials and temptations; give them courage to face the perils which beset them; and grant them a sense of your abiding presence wherever they may be; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen."

We also pray for all those affected by Covid. It has taken its toll on our shop these last two months as all of our volunteers have been infected after almost two years of carefully avoiding it.

We join Rev. Lee and pray that God will "'tend the sick, give rest to the weary, bless the dying, shield the suffering, pity the afflicted, and shield the joyous.' That it will all be done for love’s sake.". Amen

Our hearts are breaking this morning for those souls lost in the plane crash last night over Drum Inlet. The gift of our community is that there are indeed only a few degrees of separation between so many of us as we all watch and wait with the recovery efforts. We are particularly mindful of our students whose day at school is permeated by the loss of four of their classmates and friends. I am also aware of the increasing anxiety of men and women and their families awaiting deployment with the evolving world tensions in Ukraine. Others of you are awaiting biopsy results or tending to newly broken limbs. Others are fighting Covid.

But so too are people awaiting the birth of grandchildren. New jobs are starting. Many people will propose marriage today. Some of you are exploring other parts of the world with family and new found friends. Books are being read, houses painted, flowers planted.

The power of God coming into the world as one of us, into the human condition with all its changes and chances, is never more evident than now. Our vulnerability provides an open door to the peace that passes understanding. We are told by Jesus that we will never be left or forsaken. We are told that he will be with us always even unto the end of the ages. My prayer is that we, people of faith, will “ keep watch with those who work or watch or weep this day.” That God will “tend the sick, give rest to the weary, bless the dying, shield the suffering, pity the afflicted, and shield the joyous.” That it will all be done for love’s sake.

Advent can be a wonderful mix of emotions: joy, delight and anticipation. Sometimes, however, as we prepare to celebrate the miracle of Jesus’ birth, we may find ourselves consumed with too many details, and even worse, sorrows of years past.

So, in this time of joyous anticipation and somber reflection, what to do about those mixed emotions? Look to the women of the Bible, especially the strong, bold, outspoken women directly connected to Jesus’ birth: Hannah, Mary, Elizabeth and Anna. Collectively they dealt with the death of a son, the death of a spouse, harassment, infertility, fear, anxiety and grief. Think of them as your spiritual grandmothers, your guides in traversing difficult ground. If we ignore their stories, we miss out on a literal host of resources — and just perhaps, a richer Advent.

Volunteering at the Episcopal Shoppe is rewarding every day as we help people find books, calendars, palm crosses, etc. to use in their daily lives, for a current spiritual need or for a special celebration.

It is especially rewarding when we are able to use our proceeds to fund a grant. We are elated to have been able to support Trinity Center with a grant for a new "used" van, and we thank them for sending us this photo. Love the new wheels! 🚚

Working in the bookstore is very detail-oriented and can be hard physically. You will be on your feet most of the time and will sometimes need to haul books around the store and receive shipments. You may need to lift heavy boxes when receiving shipments or preparing outgoing shipments.

Regular duties include helping customers locate books and gifts in the store, answering customer calls, taking special orders, operating a point-of-sale computer register, giftwrapping when requested , shelving inventory, entering new inventory into software, shipping daily orders, rearranging shelves, designing displays, introducing authors at events, training and assisting volunteers, and writing reviews for our website.

Job description is varied and flexibility is required on everyone’s part. As you can see, we are very busy store which requires flexibility in regard to your duties and teamwork.

Please join us on Thursday, June 10 at 7PM EST for our EBA Author Zoom Conversation with The Rev. Dr. Michael Battle. The conversation will be moderated by David Crabtree, journalist and lead news anchor for WRAL-TV. They will discuss Battle's newest book, Desmond Tutu: A Spiritual Biography of South Africa's Confessor.

Battle's book explores the spirituality of Archbishop Desmond Tutu, a Chrsitian mystic. “Getting the oppressor to see God in common with the oppressed was Tutu’s greatest contribution,” Battle writes. “For the oppressor to confess that their god was ultimately diminished in the religion of apartheid is a miracle that we all need to replicate.”
