The courage to stop -
The courage to stop Hi My friend Dan Sullivan, author of 10x is Better Than 2x, says that the difference between courage and confidence is that courage is uncomfortable. He says that confidence feels good but only comes after a period of discomfort. Not the other way around. This is hitting home for me in a big ...
You won't leave a hole -
You won't leave a hole. Hi My friend "Think of it like pulling your finger out of a bucket of water; you won't leave a hole." This is a piece of advice that my dad once shared with me that I in turn shared during his celebration of life last weekend. You see, at the time, I was struggling with the idea of leaving ...
The fear of staying the same -
The fear of staying the same Hi My friend, I don't know if there's ever been a time in my life when I've been more acutely aware of my failings to challenge the status quo. I hear all kinds of weird stuff happen to you after the death of a loved one, and it would appear that I'm in the thick of bizarre stuff. (Am I having a s...
Handle the mess better -
Handle the mess better Hi My friend, Life is messy. It only takes a little effort to see just how messy it is. Wars, pollution, global warming, and political outrage. The mental health crisis, our physical health crisis, drugs, exploitation, inequality. Then there are our messes. Loss of every kind. Death, divo...
Finding the good in goodbye -
Finding the good in goodbye Hi My friend, Dad passed away last Thursday. Hospice let us know there wasn't much time left, so my sister and I did all we could to help. My stepmom Barbara, sister Charlotte, and I were by his side. It was a brutal and beautiful time. As much as I thought I was prepared, I was not. I'm not...
The truth sets you free but... -
The truth sets you free but... and feeling pi**ed off at the truth is normal Hi My friend. Gloria Steinem was on to something here, and I'm side-stepping politics to focus on how this quote might be helpful. Are you ready? OK. Think about the last time you heard some truth you didn't want to hear. I'll give you a few from ...
Unhelpful public speaking advice -
Unhelpful public speaking advice My friend One of the most popular and, in my opinion, unhelpful pieces of advice in public speaking is "Know your audience." Are you familiar with it? People say it, but exactly how one goes about it needs to be clarified. Do I memorize the attendees' LinkedIn profiles? Stage my version...
Practice enough-ness -
Practicing enoughness Hi My friend, Have you ever wondered what enough really means? We can look at the textbook definition, but let's dig a bit deeper, shall we? What does it mean to do, have, and, most importantly, be enough? There seems to be a lack of enoughness lately. We don't have to look far for eviden...
The new year is upon us and as expected, many are discussing resolutions.
New Year's resolutions have been around for a long time. The first recorded resolutions started roughly 4,000 years ago with the Ancient Babylonians. From there, people from all walks of life have been making and breaking their resolutions as part of an annual ritual.
A resolution is "a firm decision to do or not to do something." It's a reasonable way to approach change in the new year.
"What do I want to do/not do."
But as the new year approaches, I've been reflecting on a conversation with a client. He's been through a lot this year, more than his fair share. When I asked him how he's gotten through it, he said that he asks himself...
"Who do I want to be."
I was struck by the depth of the question because it shifts us away from the "good" vs. "bad" that resolutions create and focuses our attention on the values we want to display.
It's better than a resolution; it's an intention.
Where resolutions are firm, intentions are flexible, allowing us to face the challenges ahead gracefully. I don't know about you, but I could use more grace.
So, whether you set resolutions or not, I hope you'll take a few moments to reflect on who you want to be in 2024. And more importantly, I want you to be that person today.
Your front-row fan,
Alex

WHY MY SERVICES ARE SPECIAL
My services are special to those who want to show up as something other than the status quo. I believe every speaker has a unique style that makes all the difference when it comes to message delivery. Typical Public Speaking training demands that you fit into a box, with rules and robotic movements. When we work together you’ll throw that box out the window and show up as yourself. I offer high-touch, personalized training that’s designed to create YOUR speaking style as you want to be, and not how some dusty old book tells you it should be.
