I’m totally trashed after supporting a team in the Baja 1,000.
It’s one thing to sit through a lecture about the effects of stress hormones and sleep deprivation but it’s another thing to experience it!
Statistically speaking, I’m more likely to get sick now than during the event because my immune system is run down. If you are done with an event it’s important to stay away from sick people (especially if you got injured ), take a 20 minute nap in afternoon , go for a walk or bicycle ride and try to get some vitamin C in you. Gentle lower trunk rotations are one of my favorite exercises for my back.

Recovery is an important part of preparing for the next race !

Baja 1,000 is an amazing experience . So honored to support Terry Webb and team Baja Bound.

Baja Night shift

It’s 10:07PM, bikes are about 1,000 miles into it, and I am monitoring radios, SCORE international and giving updates to the teams. Terry Webb will get the bike sometime tomorrow if all goes well.
It’s hard for the guys waiting to ride because they need to rest but it’s so easy to get caught up in watching the race .
Steve Hatch told me to make sure they rest up or else when it’s their turn they will be exhausted .
I’ve learned so much and it’s been awesome to support these riders.

Packing up and heading towards the race with Terry Webb.

11/15/2023

Seeing Terry take off into the darkness and all we can do is hope we see him at the designated stop. We waited a long time for him to show but we were happy to see him come in. He had some gates to open (and close) then rip it through deep silt but he made it. Then a three hour drive back to home base. We learned a lot about the equipment and the track. Terry is feeling good about the race.

It takes motivation in order to have the discipline to take care of the body. Riding is my motivation for taking care of myself.

Wingman and wingnut (Terry Webb) are headed to Baja baby! Terry has been training hard, getting sponsors , working insane hours at power plant, and doing a ton of bike suspensions for his business TBT Suspensions. I’m so proud to support this team ! I’m going as head medic, head chef, assistant bike mechanic and chase truck driver !

Are you getting ready for Baja? And I don’t mean vacation ….

After meeting with Steve Hatch and Terry Webb I have an under rated tip that can make a big difference on your performance at the Baja 1,000. Welcome to the Tip of the Day.

😴 Sleep. With all the excitement and crazy amount of things to do leading up to the race it’s easy to discount sleep. Most research states men have to have about 7 hours of sleep, women need about 8 to 9 hours. It will make your reactions faster, better decision making, and improve your endurance. Why spend so much time and money preparing the bike etc just to blow it due to poor sleep?

Come back tomorrow for another great tip. See you out there!

Riding is a key component of how I stay healthy mentally. We all have experiences in life that change us: whether that be the loss of a job, the loss of a loved one, or a dream that crashed and burned. I do have my faith and many people that I love. But nothing makes me feel the way I do as when I ride. If you ride then I don’t have to explain it. If you don’t ride then maybe it’s time to get lessons and go try it. But if you don’t understand, please don’t call the cops just to complain about the noise. That rider might be doing the only thing that keeps them sane….

One of my favorite muscles are the adductor magnus. The name is cool and they work with other hip adductor muscles to provide an incredible amount of force that brings our legs together.
What do they have to do with arm pump, bike stability, and riding longevity?
Everything.
When you train these muscles to grip instead of hanging on with your hands, it's a total game changer.
It's one of the main reasons why Ryan Wells does not get arm pump, he can ride better than most people with one hand, and he is able to ride long trips like Baja with minimal fatigue.

The trick is learning how to grip the bike correctly with your feet.
But that's for a different lesson.

I hope this helps!

See you out there!

Here is one of the most effective ways of strengthening the small spinal muscles that give us stability with riding (and everything else). I have riders perform these on the dirt bike for training specificity.
Here I am explaining how to do these in acceleration position. I also recommend doing them in ready position and breaking position.
Most people fatigue after about 10 to 12 reps. If you shake or lose the position you need to take a break.

I hope this helps.

Dear Riding Family
These are the MOST IMPORTANT performance pieces you could ever invest in, they are your paraspinal muscles. These little dudes support your frame. If they fatigue you sit down. If you sit down well, you know what happens to your riding quality. If they aren’t strong enough to hold your spine in place then your back hurts.
Please consider making these your number one priority in any conditioning program.
I hope this helps

Hi
I am building up an email list for our business Wingman Physical Therapy. Our business serves the dirt bike riding community. I will do my best to include information about helping riders perform better, recover from injuries, and answer common questions. I have spent a lot of time doing research about riding as well. The purpose of the newsletter is to share some of this information and to let people know what’s going on with Wingman PT.
Please send me your email address to [email protected] if you are interested in receiving the newsletter.
I hope you are all doing well!

On this Father’s Day month, I would like to take a moment to honor a man and a family that made a big impact on me. Jason Baxter was a man that touched a lot of people’s lives. I know that he touched my life as well. When I first met Jason he was in a recliner with nothing on but a sheet and a smile. Normally this would make someone a little uncomfortable, but I have worked in hospitals for so long that it didn’t bother me at all. Jason was recovering from a broken pelvis which required rods to hold it in place; so it was difficult to wear clothing. Jason seemed to make the best of it and at times even made jokes about how it looked with a large item ‘poking’ up under the sheet. This was Jason, always making light of things and making the best of things. Where others would have complained, made a big deal out of it, or given me a 1,000 reasons why they couldn’t do anything, it just didn’t seem to phase him. Of course as a physical therapist, this was a dream patient to work with. What was even more amazing was his wife, son, daughter, and close friends; that all seemed to find a solution to what seemed like an impossible situation. In all my years of being a physical therapist, I had never seen a fractured pelvis where a person could not bear any weight on it. This would prove to be a very challenging patient for a hospital, yet his family had adapted to caring for him at home. My favorite moment was when I watched his son grab the blanket Jason was laying on, tilt his recliner completely backwards, and slide Jason from the recliner into the wheelchair. I was never taught this way of moving a patient, yet this family had found a way.

When I evaluated Jason, I was amazed that even with his injuries, he had a great prognosis. He had fractured bones, but no other serious injuries. I made a treatment plan titled, “Wheelchair to dirt bike’. It had several different stages based on his healing and I presented it to Jason and his family. I could see, and they could see, a pathway to his recovery. We started immediately. We worked with exercise bands in his wheelchair and recliner. We even tried a pedal exerciser for a little while. Robin took videos of me doing Kung Fu movements for his wrist motion while Jason made funny faces in the background. We made progress, we got to know each other, and we laughed a lot.

Over the years I have had many conversations with patients. It’s one of the great things (and sometimes not so great
things) about being a PT. But, talking to Jason, I realized that we had so much in common. My father is a retired electrician, I came from a musical family, I was just starting a business, and I love the Lord. Jason had so much to offer on every topic. Jason had his own electrical business, had been a music teacher, and he had been a part of the church for a long time. What I admired most about Jason was how much his wife loved him, what great ‘kids’ he had, and how many friends Jason had.

This world we are told as men that we are successful based on the size of our house, the amount of money in our account, and the kind of car we drive. However, in God’s Kingdom, it’s the number of lives we impact ‘in a positive way’. When I went to the celebration of life for Jason. I had a hard time finding a parking space. I had to walk several blocks and there were so many people at the church that I sat in the overflow area. I also noticed that there were many people from diverse backgrounds. One thing they all had in common was an acknowledgment of how Jason had impacted them, and how they would miss him. I could see that Jason had done much for the Kingdom. He was indeed a positive force for the Lord, and a great role model for me.

I mourn the loss of what would have been a great friendship. I mourn the loss of seeing him ride again, because I am confident he would have. Jason, and his family, did everything right. But God called him home. I had to write this, because he and his family deserve the recognition for all the great work they did, and for what an amazing experience they gave me. They are heroes in many ways, though you will never hear them say it. I will go on, we will all go on, because we have to, but we will carry him in our souls. We are all better people for having him in our lives.
I dedicate this to the memory of a great friend, husband, and father; Jason Baxter.

Being a physical therapist, I am trained to evaluate, make a plan and work with people to help them meet their goals. I met Jason, I evaluated him, made a plan, and we worked hard to make those goals happen. Jason never gave up. He listened to me, asked me questions, embraced the plan, and worked hard to execute whatever needed to happen. In all aspects, Jason and his family were 100% successful.
Sometimes God has other plans when we’re making ours.
I learned this when my sister passed and I learned it again through miscarriages.
I learned something really important from Jason and that is a new definition for success. David was going to walk again, stand to hug his loved ones, and he was going to ride again. He was successful at never giving up. He never quit. His spirit and smile, continue to encourage me to never give up.
Funny how I cam into his life to teach, but he ended up teaching me.

04/09/2023

Happy Easter from our family to yours!

I just wanted to let you guys know that WingmanPT is certified to sell CTI Knee braces. We’re in the process of doing some on boarding and will have more information in the following days.

Walk it off.
I heard that a lot growing up playing football.
And as a physical therapist I can honestly say that it’s good advice. The Romans would put their injured soldiers on horses and walk them around.
In my time working with dirt bike riders I have often seen them get back on the bike immediately after an injury. I can see how in the vast majority of cases this is a good thing.
It’s important to get back on the bike for confidence and to learn from the experience.
It’s important to keep doing something you love.
It’s important for the body to move in order for it to heal.
The only problem is that sometimes it’s difficult to separate dangerous symptoms from just another injury.
I have been amazed at the number of times an xray doesn’t show a fracture or an MRI fails to pick up the issue. In PT school they told us to evaluate the patient before reading the imaging. I thought it was crazy until I saw it happen where my evaluation matched what the patient was telling me but their imaging didn’t show it.
That’s why I think it’s so important to talk to someone and to not ignore what you are experiencing even if the imaging doesn’t show anything. A quick trip to the ER really isn’t the end all be all of recovery.
Sadly that’s what I see a lot of riders doing.
I want to encourage you to talk about things with someone that knows the body. Physical therapists know a lot about the body and usually have more time to talk to you than a medical doctor.
I just think for the money they are a great value.
I hope this helps!

New bikes are out, did you get a new body?
As exciting as new bikes are, we frequently think we have to settle for our ‘old bodies’. In my years as a physical therapist, I am amazed at the number of people that think pain is normal or that they can’t improve because of age, size, injuries, or….
I love challenging conventional thinking especially when the science proves the body can do amazing things when trained correctly. Reach out to find out how I can help or just keep doing the same things expecting the same …..

Why did I take riding lessons from Ryan Wells?
First of all, being a healthcare provider I know the importance of education and training. When I decided to serve the riding community I knew I needed training. My buddy ‘teaching’ me how to ride wasn’t going to cut it. I knew I had to have a foundation in riding technique and I also needed to understand what challenges the riding community faced. I am so glad I invested the money and time working with Ryan. I know the things he taught me will help me serve riders and me!

Ever have to change a tool so it would fit what you were working on? Either the job was going to take forever, or it just wasn’t going to work unless you changed what you were doing.
I changed proven exercise training programs and adapted them for dirt bike riders. It looks different than traditional fitness programs, but then again, riding a dirt bike is different than other sports.

Train with a fitness pro that actually knows what Hard Enduro is. For a limited time I will have three different levels of coaching. If you’re interested message me or book a call wingmanpt.com.
