Today is a bittersweet day for the PhysioShop. This is the final week of Kameron Harder’s time with The Physio Shop. We are so grateful for all of Kameron’s service to The Shop and all the patients he has had an impact on over his years here. Kameron will be missed, but we wish him the best on all future endeavors. Tell him bye if you see him today and wish him good luck. We love him a lot.

BLOOD FLOW RESTRICTION RESEARCH

The research on blood flow restriction is continuing to accelerate at a rapid, near exponential rate because it is not only EFFECTIVE at what it's supposed to do (increase muscle mass/strength with light loads in less time), but we're also learning other areas where it is looking to be extremely effective such as improving cardiovascular endurance at very low intensities (Park, 2014), producing significant post-exercise hypoalgesia (pain relief) (Hughes, 2020,2021), similar morphological tendon changes as heavy load strength training (Centner, 2019, 2021), and even preserving post-surgical bone mass following ACL reconstruction where traditional approaches have FAILED to do so (Day, 2022).

It just so happens that the indications for blood flow restriction include an inability to load heavier or the presence of significant muscle/joint pain (Rolnick, 2021) - two huge areas that perfectly align within the scope of practice of physical therapists - something that the APTA recognized in 2018.

Since 2018, hundreds of more papers have been produced that have now expanded the findings to clinical populations...all of which have been extremely well tolerated even in very at risk populations such as those with chronic kidney disease (Rolnick, 2022). In fact, multiple publications have been produced to help the clinician reduce the potential for adverse events with BFR training (Patterson, 2019; Rolnick, 2021; Nascimento, 2022).

So when someone tells you that physical therapists should not be allowed to do blood flow restriction - I ask - then who is better positioned to take on this modality to get people back to the activities they love as quickly as possible? Via

It’s the holiday season and it’s time to start giving! Each year we try to collect toys to help parents and kids receive gifts they otherwise may not have. We have a large list of kids that would love to unwrap gifts this holiday season. If you are interested in giving, please stop by the shop at the front desk and you can choose a name and purchase gifts for that kid. It would mean a lot to us and even more to them if you participate!

Happy Friday and enjoy the weekend! 😄

It’s been a busy couple weeks for the shop. This past weekend Kam and Ben ran the Soulstice race! They placed first and second in their age group! The weekend before the shop was hanging out at the Flagstaff Marathon and had the chance to give all those great runners some recovery! We love getting to be involved in this community!

One of our favorite things here at The Physio Shop is getting interns from all over. Yesterday was Maudie’s last day and now she is headed back to Tallahassee for another cross country and track season at Florida State University. Hump day! Balancing the middle of week here in the clinic. Goodbye Jason! 👋

As of today, our fearless leader Dr. Jason Dorsch is leaving The Physio Shop! It’s a sad day for us here, but we are very happy for him and excited for this new chapter in his life. Starting next week, Jason will be pursing his lifelong dream as an assistant manger at a small paper distributing company in Arcosanti, AZ. Being the small community it is, he will be using his free time to take up some of his favorite hobbies, such as kite flying, bird watching, and creating floral arrangements.

This day, April 1st, will be remembered for hours, perhaps even a day here at the shop.

Interview with Neida, the friendly smile under the mask that greets you when you walk in. 😊 😷

As a Flagstaff local (born and raised) what’s your all around favorite restaurant in Flag?

Easy, is my go to for breakfast. The chilaquiles are the best around!

You have been involved in dance nearly your whole life, what was your first memory of this?

When I was 4, I was dressed up as a bark beetle in a play and I had to dance around the trees, which were older people in costumes. 🤷‍♀️

What superpower would you choose and why?

Probably to fly. I want to travel a lot and this would definitely make it easier. I’ve been to 4 other countries but want to add a lot more to that list. I’m thinking the Mediterranean as my first trip when I finally learn to fly.

What do you think about when you are alone in your car?

Food, usually. 🍟

What is something you want to use your life to accomplish?

I’d love to use my skills and experience to teach dance and arts to younger Native American individuals. It’s a great experience and various tribes have little access to these resources, so I’d love to incorporate that into my life in the future.

What’s your favorite exercise? 🏋️‍♀️

At the shop, we LOVE deadlifts, and there are a lot of reasons why. Everybody get them — patients, members, old, young, athletic, sedentary, it’s an all around great movement and the benefits are endless.

The deadlift is a functional movement that allows us to train the action of bending and lifting from the floor while adding significant strength to our posterior chain. This means the deadlift helps to strengthen the low back, the hips, and the hamstrings (even the calves, upper back, shoulders and hands) all with one movement.

Whether someone is coming to see us for low back pain, foot pain, or trying to improve their global functional capacity, the deadlift is a must, and list of benefits is long.

Definitely add this one to your routine like Diane (pictured above) has and you’ll see some great results.

Meet Brett, SPT

Brett is another current student physical therapist with us for the next 12 weeks. Brett graduated with his bachelors degree from the University of Wisconsin La Crosse in Exercise and Sports Science. From there, he attended the UW Doctor of Physical Therapy program and is in the final stages of his education. Brett is interested in pursuing travel physical therapy in a multitude of settings following his graduation.

Brett enjoys snowboarding, playing volleyball and basketball, playing his guitar, and playing Settlers of Catan (best board game out there).

Fun fact: Despite being pretty bad at it, Brett loves to dance! 🕺🏻

Meet Casey, SPT

Casey has just joined us this week as one of our new student physical therapists and will be with us for the next 12 weeks! Casey is in her final internship within the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at Alvernia University based out of Redding, Pennsylvania. She is very interested in pursuing an outpatient orthopedic career once graduated from PT school.

Casey likes to hike, disc golf, snowboard and run (fits in well here!). She is also a proud dog mom of 2, played D2 soccer in college, and is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist. Oh, she also can and does change her own oil. 🚗 💪

We love teaching here at the shop and love to be the influencers in a new generation of DPTs.
