Contact information, map and directions, contact form, opening hours, services, ratings, photos, videos and announcements from Willow Bend Environmental Education Center, Nonprofit Organization, 703 E Sawmill Road, Flagstaff, AZ.
Willow Bend Environmental Education Center's mission is to provide educational outreach services that build environmental awareness and an ethic of responsible stewardship of our natural and cultural resources.
We’re thrilled to have started the school year by visiting Flagstaff Junior Academy to engage with their Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders. Our team member, Melissa, had the pleasure of teaching these young students about the importance of recycling and how they can make a positive impact on the environment.
Through interactive lessons and hands-on activities, such as sorting through a bag of recyclable and non-recyclables items, the students explored the journey of waste and learned how their actions can contribute to a cleaner, healthier planet.
Thank you FJA for having us, and for & for making these program possible!
Thank you Mike Dechter for leading another outstanding Mushroom Identification Workshop at Willow Bend! We are fortunate to have your continued support and expertise in our programming.

Learn all about red wigglers as we explore their anatomy, ecology, and diet, and learn the process of creating vermicompost. Participants will receive guidance on building and maintaining their own worm compost bin, with the option to take home their new worm farm to start composting food scraps. One bin will be provided per family.
This program is free to the public, generously sponsored by the City of Flagstaff Sustainability Office. Spots are limited, registration is required.

We extend our deepest gratitude to the Arizona Community Foundation of Flagstaff, W.L. Gore and Associates Inc., the Burton Family Foundation, and the Molly and Joseph Herman Foundation for this year’s grant award.

Your support goes a long way in helping us foster environmental stewardship within our community, and we are incredibly excited to carry forward this important work!
A big THANK YOU to Flagstaff Unified School District () for welcoming us at Tuesday night’s board meeting! We’re thrilled to have had the opportunity to share Willow Bend’s impact in our schools.
We’re especially grateful for the board’s decision to fund our Picture Canyon field trips again this year! The support from FUSD and City of Flagstaff’s PROSE division () allows us to continue inspiring young minds and fostering a deep connection with the natural and cultural history of this area.

Participants learned fun recipes and got a taste of (pun intended!) the cultural and nutritional value of insects found in traditional diets of many indigenous communities here in the Southwest. In times of hardship, insects such as cicadas, grasshoppers, and crickets were crucial in preventing starvation and utilizing the yearly swarms that are part of our beautiful environment.
Swipe to see some of the yummy creations! ➡️
Thank you Chef Somana for facilitating this event, and to all the participants for coming out!

As we bid farewell to one of our long-standing board members, we can’t help but think, how can we possibly express our gratitude for all that you’ve done for Willow Bend, Neil?
For nearly a decade, your unwavering dedication, countless volunteer hours, and passion as a board member at Willow Bend have profoundly impacted our community in positive ways. Your leadership and expertise has brought environmental education to life through memorable Picture Canyon field trips, engaging Science Saturdays, thought provoking community tours, fan-favorite Beale Wagon Road trips and so much more!
You’ve inspired countless individuals over the years. Thank you, Neil, for your contributions and steadfast commitment. We are endlessly grateful for everything you’ve done!
We had so much fun this past weekend at our Science Saturday: The Five C’s of Arizona!
Participants mined for copper, practiced their cattle roping skills, ate citrus, weaved cotton on a loom, learned about Arizona’s sunny climate with cyanotype paper and more!
It also wouldn’t be a Science Saturday without some experimentation! Our first couple of trials with the cyanotype paper didn’t come out as clear as we’d hoped, so, as scientists do, we changed one variable at a time and watched our results change. Despite the instructions stating to leave the paper in the sun for 5-15 minutes, we learned that less time is better. Two minutes in the sun seemed to be the sweet spot. We also learned the images come out more clear when putting the paper under running water vs. in a bucket of water. This allows the chemicals to wash off completely and stops the developing process. Swipe to see the results of our sun prints!
Mark your calendars for next month, August 3rd, to learn all about waste and recycling!
