September is Hunger Action Month!!

This September, every action―big or small―is one step closer to an America where no one is hungry. Your voice, your actions and your commitment are critical in the movement to end hunger. When people are fed, futures are nourished. With access to nutritious foods, we can all reach our full potential.

Together we raise awareness about hunger in our community and inspire action.

You can help by donating to our local food pantry with your time and offer support.

https://www.floresvillefoodpantry.org/
Every Thursday at 8am devoted volunteers help feed our community with food distributions.

The San Antonio Food Bank has also helped our community during times of need. This organization continues to offer support and resources to our county.

If you have a few non perishable items to donate, consider taking them to the Lodi Park to place in the Community First Food Pantry.

Together we can fight hunger and feed our neighbors.

Today is the start of National Hispanic Heritage Month. Starting on September 15 – October 15, the U.S. government celebrates the countless contributions of more than 60 million Hispanic Americans, Latinos, Latinas, and Latinx-identifying people to our culture and society. Hispanic Americans are the largest minority group in the United States today, and generations of Hispanic Americans have consistently helped make our country strong and prosperous. They contribute to our Nation and community beyond description.

Hispanic Americans embody the best of our American values, including commitment to faith, family, and country. The Hispanic-American community has left an indelible mark on our government, culture, and economy.

During National Hispanic Heritage Month, we recognize the contributions and the important presence of Hispanic and Latin Americans in our Floresville community.

Labor Day, a federal holiday in the United States, is celebrated every year on the first Monday of September. This year, the Labor Day in US will be observed on 4 September 2023. The day is dedicated to pay tribute and honor to the American laborers or workers for their social and economic achievements. I pay tribute to all of you, who work hard day in and day out.

Have you ever been in a situation where you are really happy about a personal achievement, but find that the people around you are belittling it?
While it’s wonderful to believe that the people around us only want us to succeed in our endeavors, there will be times when you’ll encounter a phenomenon that people call the “crabs in a bucket” mentality (or simply the “crab” mentality)

If you put one crab in a bucket, it can claw its way up and out, and return to the wild. But something interesting happens if you put a bunch of crabs in a bucket. If one of them tries to climb out, the rest pull it back into the bucket.

Further, if the crab tries to climb out a second time, the other crabs gang up on the crab again, and may actually begin to break its claws to completely hinder its progress. This means that none of the crabs end up escaping because they are all working against each other.

Unfortunately, this type of mentality is often translated into human behavior. The crab mentality is a metaphor for how humans respond when they see someone else around them achieving some kind of self-improvement that they can't achieve themselves.

This phrase is typically used when observing toxic people giving grief to someone else. People who are miserable want those around them to be miserable as well. Therefore, when they see someone getting ahead, they want to pull them back down.

Last night it was shown to me what I had assumed but am now sure, I am surrounded by crabs.

I was elected to council in 2018. In 2019 I was voted by peers from other municipalities to represent our city on the Board of Directors for the Texas Municipal League. I have represented our city at the state level, taking a seat at the table with other elected officials from large cities ensuring we have a voice. From other board members, it was recommended I throw my name in for the nominations committee to consider me for the President-elect position of TML. You serve for one year as president elect then the following year, you serve as President of the Texas Municipal League. In order to apply for this, I have to submit my application with my curriculum vitae and a resolution passed by my council in support of my application.

Last night I put this on the agenda. You see, I have done this process before and the council unanamiously voted in support. I rescinded my application since the current Mayor Cissy, David Johns, Nick Nissan, Paul Sack sued the city. We were in litigation and I had no answers for the nominating committee as to when it would end so I rescinded my application. (which by the way, the city was not in the wrong, you can request open records on that if you’d like). Now that it is over, I had planned to submit my application.

I was questioned by all council members which I graciously answered. This gave them more insight to how involved I’ve been since I’ve been on the board of directors. I’ve served on the budget committee, constitutional assembly committee, legislative committee, etc. I’ve participated in the TML conferences since I was a member of FEDC. Why did I want to throw my name in to serve as president? For the recognition, no not my name, for the name of Floresville. For our city. I said in the last meeting when you go places and meet with other elected officials from across the state, and you say Floresville, they say Councilwoman Marissa Ximenez. Because I represent this city anywhere I go and with whomever I speak to. The other council members with the exception of Ms. Rodriguez-Green said I “put them down” by commenting at the last meeting.

Just in case you didn’t see the last meeting Ed Villereal made a disrespectful comment towards me insinuating I don’t give my time to the city. I may have not been in person for a lot of the special meetings they called so my reminder to them of what I do on the board was not to put them down, but so people know why. But council took this as directed towards them and voted against me. So all with the exception of councilwoman Rodriguez-Green did not vote to support my application. There were also comments from Ed coming out of left field regarding TML and financials. TML is a very reputable association, they rely on membership and sponsorship to host their annual conference and events throughout the year. Since they did not vote to support my application, my application will be incomplete, therefore not meeting qualifications.

It is unfortunate the council has shown me they do not value Our City to the extent to have representation at the highest level. To put Floresville on the map by having the first Latina President of TML representing the state and our great city.
I was told “try again next year” by Councilwoman Rolland. :sigh: You have to take your chances when you can. Tomorrow is not promised for anyone. I will continue to represent you and my city on this board, but not as president-elect, just a board members as I have been.

I normally do not post like this but if you watch the video, you may not know the significance of the decision made last night. I just wanted you to know.
Thank you to those who continue to support me.
I represent everyone with honor and am here for you always.
