At the end of my mothers life, I was very numb. It was as though I could acknowledge what was occurring but I could not feel it. I was commuting back and forth from Atlanta for 6 weeks, trying to keep my family together, constantly worrying about my baby girl, dealing with my father who was emotionally paralyzed and working with my demanding patients. As many of you know, treading the water with my father has always been a hard task for me but I knew that he was heartbroken and scared. I had to be the strong one and I was. Now that my baby girl is healthy, I am starting to dip my feet in the lake of reality. It is a scary lake, dark and without certainty but I know I must make the journey however slow it may be. I was unable to give my mother a proper eulogy last year so I will try now.

Dearest Amma, it has been one year since I felt your warm cheek against mine. One year since I heard your sweet voice. One year since I saw your sweet smile. Covid lockdown took you away from me the last two reasonably healthy years of your life. I wish that I had you with me. We would go to the craft store. We would plant flowers. Thank you for showing me the joy in these simple things.

You suffered from the prison which was your body for most of your life. There were many tumultuous times in your life but you were able to persist. I remember you telling me after you lost my brother that I was the reason for you to go on living. Now that I am a mother, I understand your drive. I will always fight hard to be around for my children regardless of my health. Your medical illnesses taught me humility. I am grateful for every healthy day I have.

Thank you for teaching me how to be kind. Thank you for listening to me when I babbled on about some silly boy even though you did not necessarily agree with the whole dating thing. Thank you for your hugs. I miss you so much.
