Is it still “Yoga” if it looks different?
I didn’t used to think so ... When I first started teaching yoga over 15 years ago , I thought it had to LOOK a certain way... (Even if that certain way could potentially injure me or my students... )
I blame no one but myself for ignoring what I knew from nearly 20 years of personal training experience at the time ( Now over 30 years 🎉💪🏋🏻♂️)
It took me a couple years to embrace MY TRUTH as a yoga teacher. FEAR held me back at first. (I didn’t want to be judged because I was doing things differently)
Now I stand STRONG and proudly teach what may not look anything like what many might think of as “yoga“
I practice and teach what I call “FUNCTIONAL yoga”. (No big surprise since in the gym I teach functional fitness )
There is not a movement I instruct that does not serve a functional purpose. Every pose I teach focuses on two primary things. Posture and breath.
Yes, we STRETCH.. . YES we STRENGTHEN using most of the traditional yoga poses, YES it is MINDFUL practice.
HOWEVER we stretch or strengthen only to the extent that these postures serve a functional purpose
