“Although I certainty am proud of all I've achieved after enduring what no one should have to, it took me quite some time to be able to let the words come out of my mouth and tell people what I had been through.
It started when my mom married a man when I was 3 years old. soon after they were married, the s*xual abuse started. It started with him touching me and quickly led to him making me touch
him.
In no time he was making me perform oral s*x. What 5 year old should even know that oral s*x is a possibility? I was so young when all of it started, that I sadly thought this was what all step-fathers did.
It wasn't until I was in 4th grade, the secret finally came out. Years and years of silent suffering and he was finally arrested. It wasn't until I started college that I finally figured out that what I endured should only be embarrassing for him and not me. something inside me finally let myself off the hook and I can now openty express what I went through knowing it says nothing about me as a victim but it says everything about my abuser.”

We are a layer of defense against child s*xual abuse. We can break the silence by talking to our children. The American Academy of Pediatrics, has created an age-appropriate conversation guide (provided in our FREE Power of Prevention Guide), that begins as early as 18 months old. But remember, it is never too late to start the conversation!

Nearly 80% of CSA victims will initially deny the abuse or be hesitant about disclosing. One of the ways to stop s*xual abuse is to talk about it. Once children know that it is alright to tell, they may be able to stop the abuse sooner, or hopefully before it happens.

: Anthony
“To keep the abuse quiet, I never contacted anyone in my family. By doing this, I reasoned that I would not let it slip that the abuse had happened. Over time, I learned to compartmentalize the abuse, but I still avoided contact with my family. I went many many years and told no one, not even my spouse. It wasn’t until I attended a RAACE motorcycle rally that I even thought about saying something. Like I said, I learned to compartmentalize the abuse. Because of RAACE, I am now able to talk about my abuse, but more importantly, help protect our children from s*xual abuse.”

Contrary to popular belief, those who abuse children do not stand out. They usually are not “scary”, “creepy” or “weird”. In fact, over 90% of offenders are someone the child knows and trusts.
