Reparenting for Self-Love
When those closest to us in proximity growing up (typically our parents) make us feel unloved either by saying or doing hurtful things, an attachment wound is created.
Attachment wounds wire our brains for uncertainty, insecurity, mistrust, and abandonment.
As we grow up we subconsciously come to believe that WE are the problem and it’s our fault as to why our mental, emotional, or physical needs can’t or won’t be met.
Because of this, we may find ourselves constantly doing for others, trying to prove our worthiness or at least gain enough acceptance to be in relationship with others.
And while this effort and attention can be a tremendous skill that allows others to feel so loved and cared for, it can also lead to unhealthy or unbalanced relationships patterns.
Even if we are lucky enough to find someone who is healthy, we may find ourselves self-sabotaging the relationship, engaging in conflict, pushing people away, or even running away ourselves.
Reparenting your inner child can help rewrire the nervous system for self-love.
You can start small by carrying a picture of yourself as a child and envisioning saying kind and loving statements to them.
Other ways to do inner child healing can be to engage in activities you would have liked as a child, giving self-hugs, and possibly therapy with an attachment focused therapist.
You can build a more loving and secure attachment within yourself and others.
Happy healing,
Lisa 🤍

Dismantling Toxic Family Behavior

One of the most common ways trauma is perpetuated is in toxic family behavior like secret keeping, denying, blaming, gaslighting, etc. This creates such pain and disconnection for us from not only our families but our own realities, wants, and needs as well.

BUT you can begin to recognize how trauma has been passed to you, start to free yourself from it, and help prevent perpetuating the cycle for the next generation.

Somatic Tool For Dissociative Clients in Therapy

Dissociation comes up in trauma therapy. It’s an automatic defense mechanism of the nervous system that has helped clients survive unimaginable suffering at times.

That said, part of healing is helping clients experience safety in the present and staying connected to themselves and their bodies.

One way to help clients stay oriented to the present can be using physical sensations.

This causes the brain to be “working” in a sense continuously picking up on what’s going on and thus staying in the present.

I want to be clear, there are many forms and degrees of dissociation so what resources help will vary from person to person.

The key is to find what works!

This can be such a relief in itself sometimes for clients to reduce the frequency, intensity, or duration of dissociative symptoms but also plays such a huge role in making it possible for desensitization and reprocessing of traumatic material to take place so they can heal!

Repressed memories in Trauma Therapy

Some common limiting beliefs are:

I'm not good enough
I'm not smart
I'm powerless
I can't stand up for myself
I can't get what I want
I should have done more
I can't show my feelings
I can't trust my judgment
I can't handle it

Limiting beleifs are just that, BELIEFS.
Just because we have them does NOT make them true.
These thoughts might have been planted in us years ago from painful experiences we've encountered.
Experiences that said we were worth, capable, or deserving of more.
But what we often forget is that these stories were projections from those around us who might have felt that way themselves.
And yes, I know, the beleifs can definitely FEEL true to our core sometimes.
But that doesn't mean we can't change them.
What are some beliefs you struggle with?

Stories we tell ourselves

We're all wired for connection but there are a lot of steps to creating safe and healthy relationships (this includes friendships too). I know it can be scary, but practicing these skills can help create a space for more trustworthy and close relationships.

Meditation and Complex Trauma

Some people may find meditation triggering.

This could be due to something called a Phobia of Internal Experiences which is an intense fear and avoidance of feelings or sensations within the body.

This can sometimes happen with folks who have experienced complex trauma as a means of self protection where they learned feelings can be overwhelming and unmanageable.

Part of trauma therapy can be gradually teaching the nervous system that it can tolerate emotion and even learn to work with it.

02/02/2022

So often I meet people who have experienced trauma and judge themselves so harshly for how they react to the world-as if they’re choosing to react the ways in which they do.
Yet, I can honestly say, I haven’t met one person that when I asked them if they want to respond this way has told me yes.
It’s not that they choose to be this way, it’s that their body reacts to their internal and external environments in ways that aren’t serving them out of fear (trauma responses).
A big first step is learning that this is the nervous system trying to help and this would be helpful if you were actually in danger in the moment.
Unfortunately, the brain has a hard time deciphering this after trauma and sort of gets stuck in the “on switch” labeling everything as dangerous.
Part of healing is learning to reset the system to discern actual from perceived threats and that it is possible to feel safe again.
What symptoms have you struggled with and what have you found helpful in feeling safe?
