The Florida Department of Health is assisting IRSC with its Zika virus prevention efforts. Those efforts include providing information about the spread of the Zika virus and the Campus-wide distribution of mosquito repellant at no charge to the college community. The mosquito repellant is being shipped to us from the Florida Department of Health.
Zika virus-carrying mosquitoes are typically daytime biters, but also bite at night. A mosquito becomes infected when it bites a person already infected with Zika and then spreads the virus by biting others. Symptoms (fever, rash, joint pain, or red eyes) are usually mild. Most people who become infected never have symptoms. Unborn babies are most at risk from Zika virus complications. Research and testing are underway, but currently there is no vaccine to prevent Zika.
The best way to prevent the spread of Zika and to protect yourself and your family is:
• Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants.
• Stay in air conditioned locations. Windows and door should have screens. Cover sleeping areas with mosquito netting.
• Use EPA-registered insect repellents. When used as directed, they are safe and effective even for pregnant and breastfeeding women. Do not use on babies younger than 2 months old.
• Apply sunscreen and other lotions before applying insect repellents.
• Dispose of any source of standing water where you live.
Additional prevention efforts include the following:
• A notice on the IRSC Home Page.
• Detailed Zika information is available via the Health and Wellness Center website.
• Campus-wide distribution of posters and flyers in English, Spanish, and Creole A text message will be sent to all registered students with the message, “Protect yourself against the Zika virus”.
• Social Media will have the message: Stay Safe During Outdoor Activities – Protect Yourself Against the Zika Virus.
• There will also be a notice on RiverView TV.
Faculty members who are involved with high-risk students who spend extended time outside are asked to contact the Health and Wellness Center in order to facilitate the distribution of mosquito repellent ASAP.

The 2:00 PM game featuring IRSC against FSC-Jacksonville proved to be a tightly matched contest.
In the bottom of the first inning, Indian River opened up with two early runs. In the third, the Lady Pioneers added to that lead with another runner crossing the plate. With a 3-0 lead through four innings, FSCJ made a charge, scoring three in the top of the fifth to tie the game.
In what was a 'must win game' for both teams to advance, FSCJ scored three runs in the seventh inning to take command of the game with a 6-3 lead and only three outs for the Pioneers to close the gap.
IRSC opened the bottom of the seventh with a single up the middle. However, FSCJ quickly turned the tide by turning a double play and putting IRSC on the brink of elimination. The final out came on a long fly to left field, ending the Pioneer's season.
The team ends with a 46-9 record and the 2016 Southern Conference Championship.
In what has been an event with ups and downs, the 2016 FCSAA State Softball Tournament just saw the #1 ranked team in the nation, College of Central Florida, get eliminated with their second loss of the weekend.
Indian River closed out their first game of the day with an 8-0 win, sending Miami Dade home and ending their season. The Lady Pioneers continue to fight their way through the bottom side of the bracket and will face Florida State College of Jacksonville at 2:00 PM.
