This day in history โ โColonelโ Edwin Drake struck oil with his revolutionary well in 1859 near Titusville, Pennsylvania, prompting the first oil boom in North America.
In the late 1850s, American businessman and former railroad conductor Edwin Drake began a bold venture in Pennsylvania that would revolutionize the energy industry. Drake partnered with William "Uncle Billy" Smith, a salted well driller and blacksmith, to drill for oil in the manner of salted well drillers in hopes of yielding more oil than by conventional digging.
Drake and Smith drilled for months using various new techniques and a steam engine to power the drill, but their efforts were unsuccessful for several months. The project became known as โDrakeโs Follyโ and investors would pull out. However, Drake persevered and personally took out a $500 loan to keep the project alive.
On Aug. 27, 1859, Drakeโs drill bit reached its max depth of 69.5 feet, hitting a crevice. The next morning, Smith was delighted and surprised to see crude oil rising up. The duo would initially collect the oil in a bathtub!
The well would eventually produce 12 to 20 barrels a day, however, after the price of oil plummeted caused by the resulting boom, it was never profitable. The well has since been reconstructed and can be visited at the Drake Well Museum & Park.
HAPPY NATIONAL PETROLEUM DAY from the Independent Petroleum Association of America, AAPL America's Landmen, NAPE Expo, AAPG, Society of Exploration Geophysicists, International Right of Way Association and all other industry allies! Aug. 27 is a great day to commemorate Drake and Smithโs achievement as well as all of the great things American petroleum has helped accomplish since!

To be chosen by our membership to serve as your president is an honor and fills me with gratitude. I am grateful to those who have come before me, to the previous Executive Committee and to our super-fantastic staff.
As we approach our seventh decade as an organization, we have a rich and vibrant history for which we are thankful and a future full of possibilities. The future holds for each of us the possibility of steadfastness to our mission and resilience and renewal. Our definition of landwork embodies the ideas of what the energy future will bring to us โ oil and gas, wind, solar, lithium from brine and a multitude of other resources. The vastness of the resources before us โ our human resources, our energy resources โ calls upon each of us to participate, shoulder to shoulder, in the endeavor to ensure our association is sustainable far into the future.
It will require us to have conversations important to each of us as members and to listen. What is it we desire? How do we bring all our different voices together to find what we are good at and what is necessary? What member services must we aim to make better? What member services are requisite for landmen to improve and grow? These are calls to each of us.
As your president, I pledge to you to focus on a strategic path forward with an awareness of both our challenges and opportunities, to listen, and to serve you and the organization with my whole self, so that at the end of the day, we can all say we did our best for our beloved AAPL.
As the poet Amanda Gorman writes: โI challenge you to heed this call, I dare you to shape our fate.โ
May it be so.

AAPLโs Advocacy continues to raise the bar this vital election year. In fact, our team has just crushed its own record for the number of bills tracked in a single year, and itโs only August!
As of this writing, AAPL is tracking 613 total bills that could affect our members โ 176 on the federal level and 437 on the state level. Over 37 states currently have bills being closely monitored by AAPL.
It should be noted that Nevada, Texas, Utah and Wyoming aren't in session in 2024! While this election year has been supercharged, 2025 is sure to be just as busy with industry-related activity coming from these key states.
Special shoutout to Doug Schmidt, RPL, Governmental Affairs Committee chair, Russell Cohen, AAPL director of government affairs, and the entire Governmental Affairs Committee as well as those who have supported AAPLโs legislative efforts.
We simply could not monitor important bills and advocate for the land profession without the strong backing of our members. If you are not a member or have not renewed yet, please do so to help support AAPL, the land profession and the entire energy industry! https://bit.ly/3Pbu2Pd
