🌿🏌️‍♂️ Did You Know: Colonial Country Club and Charles Schwab Challenge Moment 🏌️‍♀️🌿

As we move into the final two days of the tournament, we thought you might be interested in these updates to our beloved Colonial Country Club as they host the Charles Schwab Challenge.

Renowned architects Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner have embarked on the most significant renovation in the course’s history.

Since its opening in 1936, Colonial has seen many changes, but this modernization project--ready just in time for 2024--takes it to a whole new level.

From state-of-the-art irrigation to new bunkers, tees, and greens, this update addresses every aspect of the course.

Some highlights include:

The par three eighth hole has shifted to a north-to-south orientation with a creek on the left.

The 13th green has moved back and left, with new bunkers added in front.

"Barrancas" have been introduced throughout the course, enhancing natural beauty and drainage.

And did you know the precious bentgrass greens, introduced to the South by founder Marvin Leonard, will now thrive year-round thanks to a new hydronic water system that maintains ideal soil temperatures? 🌞

As we enjoy the final rounds of the tournament today and tomorrow, we celebrate the enduring legacy and exciting future of Colonial Country Club!

Swing by and witness the revitalized course in action! Tickets are still available!

🌿🌱 Lawn Care Tip 🌱🌿

As we all know, keeping our lawns green and lush as summer approaches can be quite the challenge. We've got a simple, eco-friendly tip that not only saves time but also helps your grass stay hydrated and healthy.

🍃 Leave the Grass Clippings on Your Lawn! 🍃

That's right – when you mow your lawn, consider leaving the clippings right where they fall. Here’s why:

Natural Mulch: Grass clippings act as a natural mulch, helping to retain moisture in the soil. This is crucial, especially on those hot, sunny days.

Nutrients Galore: As the clippings decompose, they return valuable nutrients to the soil, reducing the need for chemical fertilizers.

Save Time & Energy: Skipping the bagging saves you time and reduces the physical strain of lawn maintenance. Plus, it's environmentally friendly!

So, next time you're mowing, give it a try and let the clippings do the work for you. Your lawn will thank you with lush, vibrant grass that's better equipped to withstand the heat and less dependent on external watering.

Let's keep our lawns naturally beautiful and hydrated! 💧🌼

As the vibrant pink blossoms of the Peggy Martin Rose grace Fort Worth this season, their presence is more than a celebration; it's a narrative of resilience. Known as the 'Katrina Rose,' this indomitable climber endured the ravages of Hurricane Katrina, surviving against all odds,

Peggy Martin, a rose enthusiast from New Orleans, had a collection of over 400 varieties of roses in her garden. However, when Hurricane Katrina struck, her garden was submerged under 20 feet of salt water for over two weeks. Tragically, along with her garden, Peggy Martin also lost her parents to the storm's devastation.

Two of her rose plants managed to survive these extreme conditions. One of them was an unnamed pink climbing rose, which was later named the "Peggy Martin Rose" in her honor. This particular rose became a symbol of survival and hope. Its extraordinary ability to withstand the salty flood waters and flourish afterwards made it famous among gardeners and rose enthusiasts. As a testament to its toughness, it's now celebrated for being exceptionally hardy and nearly thornless, requiring minimal care, and not prone to disease.

The rose gained further popularity when Peggy Martin herself began to share cuttings, with the proceeds going to various gardening associations and to help fund the restoration of gardens damaged by the hurricane. The Peggy Martin Rose has since become an emblem of resilience and rebirth in the face of adversity, and it continues to inspire many with its lush, vibrant blooms and remarkable backstory.

Enjoy the gorgeous blooms around Fort Worth this season!

🌼 Quick Wins for Your Landscape Midweek

Wondering how to squeeze some garden care into your busy week? Don't worry, you don’t need to spend hours for your yard to look great. Here are some quick, effective tasks that deliver big results:

Water Wisely:

Time It Right: Water early in the morning or late in the evening to reduce evaporation. A quick, deep watering session will help strengthen the roots, which is exactly what your plants need to thrive in Texas heat. Prioritize new plantings or your most heat-stressed plants.

Spot Weeding:

Grab a handful of weeds while you're out enjoying your garden. Just 10 minutes of pulling weeds can make a huge difference and will help prevent them from taking over.

Deadheading Flowers:

Spend a few minutes cutting back spent blooms on your flowering plants. This encourages new growth and extends the flowering period, making your garden look instantly refreshed.

Quick Sweep:

A fast sweep or leaf blowing on your driveway, walkways, and front porch can significantly boost your home's curb appeal. This is especially useful if you’re expecting weekend guests.

Why Wednesday?

Tackling these tasks midweek balances the workload, so you can relax more on the weekend. You’ll notice immediate improvements which is motivating and gives you a sense of accomplishment.

🌱 Even during a busy week, a little time in the garden can be a huge stress reliever. Use these tips to make the most of your Wednesday gardening time, and enjoy a beautiful, lush landscape with minimal effort!

And if you want to leave the maintenance up to the pros, contact us and we will customize a yearly landscape program for your outdoor spaces. https://www.wforks.com/contact-us

5 Easy Steps to Perfect Flower Bed Prep

1. Clear the Area

Start fresh! Remove any weeds, grass, or debris from your flower bed area. This means pulling out the bad stuff by the roots and making sure you're starting with a clean slate.

2. Add Compost

Compost is like a superfood for your flowers. Spread a 2-3 inch layer of compost over your flower bed. It'll help improve soil structure, add essential nutrients, and increase moisture retention. Think of it as laying down a healthy foundation for your plants.

3. Mix in Lava Sand

Lava sand has some cool benefits. It helps with drainage and can add trace minerals back into the soil. Sprinkle a thin layer over your compost and mix it into the top 6-8 inches of soil. It's like giving your flowers a little extra boost.

4. Add Micronutrients

Flowers don't just live on water and sunshine; they need a balanced diet. Adding a micronutrient mix to your soil ensures your plants get all the vitamins they need to grow strong and bloom beautifully. Follow the instructions on the micronutrient mix to avoid overdoing it.

5. Top with Peat

Peat moss is great for retaining moisture in the soil, especially important during those hot summer days. Spread a thin layer of peat moss over your prepared soil. This step is like putting a protective blanket over your flower bed, helping to keep the moisture in and the soil healthy.

And there you have it, five simple steps to prep your flower bed for a season of gorgeous blooms! If this sounds awesome, but you're strapped for time, West Fork Landscaping can handle the seasonal prep and monthly maintenance.

Give us a shout and we will come out and assess your landscape.

Top 3 Tips for Beautiful Blooming Azaleas

1. Right Place, Right Plant
Azaleas love the spotlight, but not all day. For those gorgeous blooms, plant them where they'll bask in the morning sun but chill in the shade during the afternoon. This little trick helps prevent leaf scorch in the hot Texas sun while ensuring they get enough light to produce those stunning flowers. Remember, azaleas are a bit like Goldilocks; they prefer their spot not too sunny, not too dark, but just right!

2. Soil Matters
These beauties are picky about their soil. Azaleas thrive in well-drained, acidic soil (pH 4.5 to 6.0). If your garden soil isn't naturally acidic, don't sweat it! Mix in some organic material like composted pine bark or peat moss to increase acidity and improve drainage. A little effort goes a long way here, ensuring your azaleas have the perfect bed to sleep in.

3. Water Wisely & Feed Thoughtfully
Water is like gold for azaleas, especially during the first few years and in the heat of summer. But too much can lead to root rot, so let's keep it balanced. Aim for moist, not soggy. And when it comes to food, a light hand is key. Use a fertilizer designed for azaleas (acid-loving plant food) right after they bloom. This gives them the nutrients they need to set next year's buds without overwhelming them.

Reach out to us and we can assess your azaleas and create a monthly maintenance program that fits your landscape!

Azalea season is here! Let's talk about these gorgeous blooms that are painting our neighborhoods in vivid colors from late March through April. 🌺✨

Did you know...Azaleas come in many varieties, perfect for adding a pop of color to your garden. Whether you love the evergreen types for year-round greenery or the deciduous ones for their big, bold flowers, there's an azalea out there just waiting to brighten up your space.

Here’s a little secret for those of you dreaming of a garden full of azaleas: they love the morning sun but prefer a little shade in the afternoon. And remember, these beauties thrive in well-drained, acidic soil. A little mulch can go a long way in keeping their roots happy and hydrated, especially during our hot summers.

Planning on joining the azalea craze? Now’s the perfect time to start. Book a time to talk to use about landscape design or get started with our monthly maintenance program so we make sure your landscape is beautiful all year long.

Understanding Fertilizer Numbers: A Guide for North Texas Gardeners

As spring peeks around the corner, it's time to get our gardens ready for a season of blooming beauty. But before you dive into planting, let's talk about something crucial—fertilizers. Ever noticed those mysterious numbers on fertilizer bags? They're not there to confuse you; they're actually super helpful once you know what they mean. Let's break it down.

The N-P-K Ratio

Fertilizer numbers are all about the N-P-K ratio, which stands for Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), and Potassium (K). These three nutrients are the main food groups for your plants, each playing a unique role:

Nitrogen (N): Think of it as the leaf-maker. Nitrogen boosts green leafy growth, making it great for your lawn and leafy plants.

Phosphorus (P): This is the root-builder. Phosphorus helps develop strong root systems, essential for flowers and fruits.

Potassium (K): Consider it the plant's health doctor. Potassium aids in overall plant health, helping with disease resistance and water absorption.

Decoding the Numbers

On every fertilizer package, you'll see a series of three numbers, like 10-10-10 or 20-5-10. These numbers represent the percentage of each nutrient in the mix. A 10-10-10 fertilizer, for example, contains 10% nitrogen, 10% phosphorus, and 10% potassium. The rest is usually filler material that helps spread the nutrients evenly.

Choosing the Right Fertilizer for Your North Texas Garden

In North Texas, springtime means preparing for a variety of plants—from your lush lawn to vibrant flowers and hardy vegetables. Here's how to pick the right fertilizer for each:

Lawns: Look for a higher nitrogen content to encourage lush, green growth. A ratio like 20-5-10 is perfect for spring feeding.

Flowers: Go for a balanced fertilizer or one with a bit higher phosphorus to encourage bloom production. A 10-20-10 ratio would be ideal.

Vegetables: These guys need a bit of everything but focus on phosphorus for strong root development, especially at planting time. A 10-10-10 or a 10-20-10 formula works well.

Timing and Application

In North Texas, late February to early March is prime time for fertilizing your lawn and prepping your garden beds. Always follow the instructions on your fertilizer package for the best results, and avoid over-fertilizing, which can harm your plants and the environment.

A Few More Tips

Always test your soil first. This can save you a lot of guesswork by telling you exactly what your garden needs.

Consider the weather. Fertilize before a light rain if you can, to help dissolve the fertilizer into the soil, but avoid heavy downpours that might wash it all away.

Go slow-release. Slow-release fertilizers feed your plants over time, reducing the risk of over-fertilization and giving your garden a steady diet of nutrients.

Happy gardening, North Texas! With the right fertilizer in hand and a little know-how, you're set for a season of vibrant growth and blooming beauty.

03/06/2024

Hey there, green thumbs and garden newbies! Today, we're diving into the world of fertilization.

Whether you're looking to boost your lawn or give your flower beds that extra oomph, knowing when and where to apply fertilizer can make all the difference. Let's break it down, easy-peasy style.

Grass: The Lawn Game

Fertilizing your lawn is like giving it a super meal. It's all about timing and the right food. Spring and fall are your go-to seasons. Why? Well, in spring, your grass is waking up hungry and needs energy to grow. In fall, it's prepping for a cold nap and needs to stock up on nutrients.

Spring Fertilization: Aim for when your grass starts growing actively. This usually means when you've mowed a couple of times.

Flower Beds: Blooms That Boom

Flower beds are a bit different. They're like picky eaters with a taste for the finer things. They prefer a slow-release fertilizer that gives them a steady stream of nutrients. Timing? It's all about the early season.

Early Spring: This is when you should introduce a balanced, slow-release fertilizer. It sets the stage for those stunning blooms.

As Needed: Keep an eye on your flowers. If they seem a bit sluggish or their color is off, they might need a little extra. But, just like with grass, don't overfeed.

Location, Location, Location

Grass: Spread the fertilizer evenly across your lawn. A spreader can help you avoid "fertilizer burn" from dumping too much in one spot.

Flower Beds: Be a bit more careful here. Apply the fertilizer around the plants, not directly on them. You want to feed the soil, not the leaves.

Pro Tips

Water Wisely: After fertilizing, give your lawn or beds a good drink. It helps the nutrients soak in.

Safety First: Wear gloves and wash up after. Keeping it safe keeps it fun.

Read the Label: Fertilizers are not one-size-fits-all. Make sure you're using the right type for your grass or flowers.

And there you have it! Fertilizing doesn't have to be complicated. With the right timing and application, you'll be on your way to a lush lawn and vibrant flower beds in no time.

Happy gardening!
