Let's Talk Prevention: Module 3 – Cell Phone and Wireless Exposure 📱
This module was developed in partnership with Environmental Health Trust, and helps students to understand:
✔️Radiofrequency radiation exposure (RF) from cell phones and wireless devices
✔️The health impacts of daily RF exposure and ways to reduce one’s exposure
✔️Other forms of electromagnetic radiation
Reduce the Risk: Filter your drinking water with a system certified to remove PFAS to reduce ingestion.
Can PFAS be broken down?
Due to their carbon-fluorine bonds, PFAS cannot be broken down easily in the body.
Even within the environment, PFAS cannot be broken down and can persist in the environment for decades. This can create a huge environmental waste problem.
🚫 Avoid Stain-resistant furniture and carpets, as well as stain-resistant treatments and waterproofing sprays.
What are PFAS ❓
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a class of man-made chemicals used in the production of a wide range of consumer products such as stain-resistant carpets, non-stick pans, waterproof jackets, and grease-proof food packaging.
✔️They are man-made chemicals that have been used in a variety of consumer products.
✔️PFAS can be found in people, wildlife, fish and animals and may stay in people’s bodies for a long time.
✔️Due to the nature of their carbon-fluorine bonds, PFAS are very hard to break down naturally and have been classified as “forever chemicals.”
Let's Talk Prevention:Module 2 – Understanding Tap Water 🚰
This module was developed in partnership with PROTECT Center at Northeastern University and covers basics on drinking water sources, issues related to safe drinking water access, different sources of contamination, contaminants in drinking water and reflects on some current cases dealing with these issues such as lead in tap water in Flint, MI. The hands-on part of this module includes an introduction to some of the basic water quality parameters, analysis of tap water, data evaluation, and understanding the public water supplier’s annual report on water quality.
*Due to the nature of this module, MBCC recommends this activity be completed by middle and high school students in the classroom setting only.
The module is designed to help students:
✔️Understand the challenges of safe drinking water access and the systemic nature of the water issues.
✔️Learn about water contaminants and how it can affect your health (an example of lead).
✔️Learn to sample and test water with simple, cost-effective kits.
✔️Learn about water testing data reports and how to read and understand them.

Congratulations to our 2024 Team MBCC runners who participated in the 52nd Annual Falmouth Road Race on Sunday, August 18th! Your dedication and energy are making a difference in our mission towards breast cancer prevention. If you'd like to support their efforts, donations can still be made on the Team MBCC page. The link is in the comments.
“We have really enjoyed implementing the MBCC’s lessons in our Environmental Science and Chemistry classes at Boston Latin Academy. Boston Latin Academy is an inner-city public school serving 1,700 economically and culturally diverse students, grades 7 through 12, from Boston’s many neighborhoods. It is a vibrant and academically rigorous school, and we welcome the opportunity to provide our students with the interactive opportunity to learn how to reduce their toxic exposure.
The hands-on nature of the curriculum fully engages the students in discovery and awareness of the materials around, on, and within them. The programs we have experienced led to a variety of exciting discussions in class and further research outside of class—this is definitely something every citizen should participate in, especially our young adults. Some students even took the app home and got their families involved in learning about the different chemicals and ways to reduce exposure.
Overall it has been a great experience and we look forward to participating in the future!”
— Kara Stafford, teacher at Boston Latin Academy

MBCC is proud to stand with Governor Healey as we take a major step towards protecting our firefighters and communities from harmful PFAS chemicals! MBCC supporters attended the signing ceremony for Bill S2902, which bans PFAS and toxic chemicals in firefighting protective gear. We're excited to continue to advocate for a ban on PFAS across Massachusetts!

Let's Talk Prevention: Module 1 – Reducing Household Toxic Exposures
This module, developed in partnership with Silent Spring Institute helps students learn:
✔️Classes of chemicals that they are commonly exposed to in their homes and their sources.
✔️Existing evidence of harm from exposures, including how chemicals disrupt the endocrine system.
✔️About “windows of susceptibility”, or periods of development during adolescence where they are more vulnerable to the effects of toxic exposures.
✔️How chemicals are regulated in the U.S. and alternative models for protecting public health.
✔️How to reduce their toxic exposures.
✔️How to graph and interpret survey data and then synthesize in report-form.
The curriculum is hands-on and aligns with the importance that curriculum standards such as Next Generation Science Standards have placed on skills such as planning and carrying out investigations, analyzing and interpreting data, and communicating information.
🚫 Avoid teflon and other nonstick cookware.
✔️Use Cast iron, stainless steel, glass, or enamel cookware instead.
MBCC is proud to share that the Massachusetts legislature has passed a bill to ban PFAS in firefighting protective gear! This is one of many steps to protect our communities from these dangerous chemicals. Thank you to all our partners and supporters for getting this done! Together, we will work towards a healthier future.
🚫 Avoid Microwave popcorn and fast-food packaging. Eat fresh foods, reduce take-out and food delivery.

In 1991, a group of le****ns founded MBCC with a unique goal of focusing on the preventable causes of breast cancer. Since then, MBCC has been instrumental in numerous advances locally and nationally, beginning with efforts in 1991 which led Massachusetts to become the first state in the nation to officially recognize breast cancer as an epidemic.
Funds raised from the Dance help to support and expand our community education program Let’s Talk Prevention: Reducing Toxic Exposures, MBCC Webinar Series, and the student environmental health program, Let’s Talk Prevention: Actions You Can Take.
