Five years ago today on 1/5/19, I tried to drink myself to death.
I didn’t know it then, but that last drinking binge would change my life. I’m grateful I didn’t succeed, and I’m grateful for my friends in recovery.♥️

What wishes do you have for the upcoming year?

We watched this movie again last night. I’ve seen it countless times, and still, by the end of the movie I cried so hard I couldn’t see the screen. I love the message of friendship it celebrates, and the connections we have to each other.

This movie has an added special place in my heart. I used to watch it on Christmas Eve … drunk, alone, and wishing I had a life like George Baileys … a life full of love and friendship.

I don’t think there’s a lonelier feeling than being drunk in the dark hours of Christmas Eve, watching “It’s a Wonderful Life”, and crying because you’ve pushed everyone away (again) due to your drinking. I’d look at the entire town singing in the Bailey’s living room, and the idea of people banding together to show how much they cared for “one of their own” seemed far away … like a planet I’d never get to.

Cut to today.

My life is overflowing. It sometimes doesn’t seem real. I often catch myself looking around, and I can’t stop smiling.

Friends? I have the best friends a guy could ask for. Love? I didn’t think this amount of love was possible to feel. Community? I see people everywhere I go that I feel a deep connection to.

Life is not good. Life is great.

But it didn’t just fall into my lap. I had to work for it. I still have to work at it, every day. To be loved, I need to love. To be connected, I need to connect. To receive joy, I need to give joy.

Please know, I’m not sharing this to brag about how awesome my life is.

I’m sharing this, because I know there’s people out there who are not having a happy holiday. I know someone reading this is feeling alone this Christmas. Someone might have even watched “It’s a Wonderful Life” alone last night, and cried - just like I used to - because they felt like nobody cared.

If that’s you … I posted this for you. I’ve been there. I get it.

I can’t tell you specifically how you’ll change your life and create one filled with love and friendship, but I do know it will involve stepping out of your comfort zone, reaching out to others, making yourself visible, and vulnerable. It will mean getting involved in the community around you.

In order for us to be connected we need to reach out. It always needs to start with us.

It also requires NOT giving up, when the world doesn’t respond right away. Building friendships and accumulating love takes time, but trust me, love is everywhere. It really is. I know because I feel it every day. If a formerly suicidal, drunk pr******te (yep, that was me too) can feel love - anyone can.

I get that it’s not easy. Even now, I don’t always want to show up and say “hello” to life. I still struggle with crippling self doubt. Very often, I’m showing up in SPITE of my fears.

This post is a great example of that.

I’m sharing from the heart, which should be enough, but I’m already bracing for negative responses that could EASILY appear in the comments. I’m sure there are people who hate the movie, or may hate my message of “not giving up” when we reach out to find love and friendship. There may be someone reading this who DID try “reaching out to others”, and they got hurt in the process. They might think my message is trite and simplistic.

I get it.

And maybe it is, but it’s my page, and this is my message. I can’t worry about how some people might take it. If I’m not sharing from the heart here, then what’s the point?

So, if you’re lonely this Christmas, my suggestion (and it’s just a suggestion) is to force yourself to call as many people as you can, and wish them a Merry Christmas. Do it, even if you don’t want to.

If you have nobody to call, maybe get out of the house and walk around. Try to see how many strangers you can wave to, and wish them a Merry Christmas. Maybe look to see if there’s any place you can volunteer this afternoon.

And if you’re trying to get sober - there are meetings, even on Christmas Day. If you can’t get to any, there’s meetings 24 hours a day on Zoom.

These are all things I’ve forced myself to do in the past. If I can do these things, anyone can.

Giving a zillion excuses why we can’t do these things is simply our fear trying to control the show. Don’t let it. Take back control. Only you can do that.

I didn’t mean for this post to go off the rails like this, but I’m not sorry. Somebody might need to read this, and maybe they’ll wind up having a better Christmas than they expected to.
