Fantastic news! School music budget will not be cut. Mr. Karos and Mr. Hogan thank the community for their letters and support.
“I humbly ask that you please reconsider this decision," one parent said during the public comment period. The group included parents, students and educators.
“I found out that rockstars wasn’t the only path for someone in music," a FCPS 6th grader said. "I found something I was good at, I found something I was obsessed with.”

Frederick County Residents and Music Supports please read and help us advocate for Elementary Instrumental Music!!!
On Friday, this link will contain the public BoardDocs for May 15 budget cut considerations. https://go.boarddocs.com/mabe/fcps/Board.nsf/Public. Fourth grade instrumental music will be on this list. The only way to fight this cut is through parent and student advocacy and letting the Board hear the community voice. The following are suggested ways you can help:
The most important contribution is attendance at the May 15 BOE with your student(s) in your school band spirit wear/swag. Let’s show them the crowd that comes out to support music in our schools! Signs are helpful!
Consider public comment at the May 15 BOE meeting which is meeting live at Central Office.Information about public comment can be found here: https://www.fcps.org/boe/calendar/3684868/boe-meeting
Draft a personal email to the BOE using [email protected] before May 15.
Use the survey link to provide feedback: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/FY25BudgetCommInput
If your time is limited, use this email template to share your thoughts with the BOE via email ([email protected]). Consider adding a personal story or anecdote to the email below to personalize and strengthen your position. Board member emails
Dear BOE members Karen, Rae, Nancy, David, Mr. J, Sue, Dean, and Brooke,
I write to you today with a deep concern that the 4th grade instrumental music program in our Frederick County Public Schools is facing potential budget cuts. As a member of this community and a caregiver in this system, I urge you to reconsider any decisions that would diminish or eliminate this vital component of our curriculum.
This year, FCPS was awarded the “Best Communities for Music Education,” from the NAMM foundation for a variety of factors including the access to music education instruction in elementary school. We had more students audition and participate in middle school and high school Maryland All-State Music Ensembles than any year in the last decade. Eliminating 4th grade instrumental music could recalibrate the district’s success in a comprehensive 4-12 instrumental education. The quality of our middle and high school music programs will suffer tremendously from the loss of this pivotal entry year of small group instruction.
Students who are preparing for a future in music as a career and college pathway will be significantly disadvantaged in their future preparation. The Blueprint for Maryland’s Future Pillar 3: College Career Readiness specifically states Arts as a CTE pathway. Additionally, the AIB Comprehensive Implementation Plan specifically states, “The Blueprint for Maryland’s Future and the updated CCR standard are not intended to alter the need for high quality programs and content in fine arts, civics, physical education, and other areas that are necessary to provide a holistic education and enable every student to be well-rounded and meet the CCR standard.” (p. 103). I understand the difficult decisions you face in allocating limited resources, but I implore you to consider the long-term impact of any cuts to music education. Our children deserve access to a comprehensive education that includes the arts, and our community benefits immensely from a vibrant and robust music program. “Every child, every day,” means we are committed to providing the opportunities that set our students up for future success.
Thank you for your attention to this matter, and I hope you will stand with us in your commitment to music education in FCPS.
Sincerely,
[Your Name]
