Laura Garcia for Calwa Park

My name is Laura Garcia and I am a board member for the Calwa Recreation and Park District. Calwa isn’t just a park to me and my family.

Born & Raised in Calwa: I am the daughter of farmworker immigrants who came to this country looking for better opportunities and the 1st in my family to graduate from college. As a lifelong resident of Calwa, I understand our history and the value Calwa Park brings to our families in Southeast Fresno. I am asking for your support to represent you on the Calwa Recreation and Park District Board. My

10 DAYS LEFT! Thankful to my friends (and baby Maria Victoria) for spending their Saturday morning with me ❤️ I could not have done this without your support and encouragement. Our communities are greatly impacted by local politics. Our families deserve safe, accessible, and renovated recreational spaces in their own neighborhoods.

For this reason, I’m running for the Calwa Recreation and Park District, so that our current and future generations have the same opportunities as other children across the City of Fresno. Make sure your voice is heard. Get out and vote!

¡Alza tu voz! ¡Salgamos y votemos!

This weekend, I bumped into a co-worker at City Hall, Rosa, who also lives in Calwa with her family. I also had the opportunity to speak with Silvia who’s lived in Calwa for over 30 years. They both agreed that Calwa is the most important park to our neighborhoods and have seen the deterioration of Calwa Park over the last decade.

My goals are straightforward, yet they’ll require all of your support: Increasing the transparency & accountability in our parks decisions, and improving & creating new amenities to help modernize Calwa Park. Parks are essential to building healthier and safer neighborhoods. Together, let’s help bring Calwa Park back to life.

Photo of my Kindergarten class at Aynesworth Elementary School. Today, I had the opportunity to walk around the neighborhood of Aynesworth Elementary. So many memories came to mind. I remembered my first crush 👀 and how fun our school’s field trips were! As kids during our field trips, we would often walk to Calwa Park to cool off in the swimming pool during our hot summer months.

Unfortunately, for over a decade now, our community pool at Calwa Park has been closed and in disrepair. Having had such fun & great memories of our field trips I can’t help but think how our children deserve better. Our community deserves better and we deserve to have access to the same amenities and resources as parks across the City of Fresno. Many of us hold near and dear memories of Calwa Park and as a board member, I’ll work hard to ensure every day that our children have the same opportunities I had growing up and work to help fix the community pool. This November 3rd, make sure to VOTE Laura Garcia for the Calwa Recreation and Park District!

Over the last couple of weeks I’ve walked nearly 1,000 homes across Calwa to inform residents of my candidacy for the Calwa Recreation and Park District Board of Directors. This weekend was special since I was accompanied by my childhood friend Guadalupe Arriaga who was also born and raised in Calwa.

We had the opportunity to speak with Maria on Sunday who’s lived in Calwa for over 30 years. While her children are all grown up, she’s witnessed the changes that have occurred at Calwa Park. We both agreed, we must ensure our park and it’s amenities are invested in to create a more prosperous park for our current and future generations. Together, we can bring Calwa Park back to life.

Evenings in Calwa ❤️ Had the opportunity to meet Mr. Harold Hale (93-years young) who served for 2 terms as the Board Chair for the Calwa Recreation and Park District.

He’s not a fan of photos, however, he was glad I stopped by personally to introduce myself and happy to see a new generation of leaders. Thank you Mr. Hale for your years of commitment and leadership to Calwa Park. Excited for what’s to come!

I Haven’t had much time to keep up on social media however I wanted you to know that I’ve been hard at work throughout the pandemic.

I’ve dropped off flyers around different neighborhoods notifying them about important resources coming to their community, I’ve volunteered to pass out hundreds of face masks, helped provide food to over 500 families in need, and helped with clean-up efforts to beautify our City.

On top of that, I’ve knocked on over 200 doors to introduce myself as your neighbor and explain why to you why I’m running for the Calwa Park. There hasn’t been a day I have not been working to improve our community and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Photos from Laura Garcia for Calwa Park's post 09/21/2020

A message of excitement and hope is what I’ve received from speaking to over 100 households introducing myself as your neighbor and candidate for the Calwa Recreation and Park District Board of Directors. I’ve gone door to door from morning to afternoon explaining why I’ve decided to run and how I’d like to bring a new perspective to the board.

As a lifelong resident of Calwa, graduate of Fresno State University, now working for the City of Fresno, I want to bring my experience and expertise back to my neighborhood. I’m not promising the world, however, I do commit to improving our parks amenities, having greater accountability and keeping you involved about decisions the board will make. Like many of you, Calwa remains that special place where memories were and will be made again. Let’s win this.

picture from 1st grade at Aynesworth Elementary School as we celebrate the 210th anniversary of Mexican Independence. I am proud of my heritage and upbringing that has helped shape much of who I am today.

It’s from my parents that I learned the value of hard work, perseverance, and discipline. That when we face challenges, hope is the last thing we lose.

Despite the barriers and hardships we face, we continue to rise!

My name is Laura Garcia and I’m running for the Calwa Recreation and Park District. As a lifelong Calwa resident, I humbly ask for your support as I run to represent my community and bring a sense of pride back to our park. My top priorities include creating a more prosperous park for everyone in Calwa to enjoy, investing in more park amenities and after school programs, ensuring accountability and increasing public safety.

Calwa’s not just a park to me and my family. Like many of you, for us it is the place where childhood and family memories were made. As a Director I will work every day to ensure that Calwa continues to be that special place where community comes together, and memories are made. Together, we can bring Calwa Park back to life.
