At just 17 years old, Robert Vogeler was diagnosed with epilepsy and experiencing about 100 seizures per year.
Now at 35 years old, he was the very first patient to undergo RNS (Responsive Neurostimulation) surgery here in Fresno - an implanted device to help prevent seizures before they begin without the surgical removal of brain tissue.

In 2021, Gary Hill underwent surgery to have a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implanted. An LVAD is used to help the heart pump oxygenated blood to the body when the heart isn't healthy enough to do so.
There are a variety of reasons that a patient might have an LVAD implanted, but in special cases, the LVAD works as a bridge to recovery while the heart heals. Gary was part of the just 1-2% of cases where his heart healed itself enough to have his device removed in 2024.
To mark this special and rare occasion, our team - including Dr. Shamsuddin Khwaja, Dr. Rohit Sundrani, and Dr. Richard Kiel - presented Gary and his wife with the encased LVAD.
