UCSF School of Medicine Dean Talmadge King presented the endowed chair plague. Dr. Sue has been a core faculty member in the Department since 2007. Dr. Sue’s focus areas include: general surgery, trauma, surgical critical care, medical education, trauma prevention, laparoscopy, tactical medicine and prehospital trauma care. James W. National Burn Awareness Week is a great time to introduce Dr. Sara Higginson as the new Director of the Leon S. Peters Burn Center.
Dr. Higginson earned a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences at UCLA. She then joined the United States Navy where she served as a helicopter pilot flying the mighty SH-60B. After time in the Navy, she had the opportunity to be an EMS helicopter pilot for Medflight of Ohio and discovered her love of medicine and specifically assisting trauma patients. She then attended the Ohio State University College of Medicine where she completed her Medical Doctorate and a Post Baccalaureate Program. Dr. Higginson is an alumna of the UCSF Fresno Surgery Residency program. Following residency, she completed a Burn Surgery Fellowship and a Critical Care Fellowship both at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Dr. Higginson leaves a faculty position at the University of California, San Diego to return home to her dream job at the UCSF Fresno Leon S Peters Burn Center. She currently serves on the EAST Burn committee, the EAST Injury Control and Violence Prevention Committees, as co-chair of the education committee, and is a member of the ABA, Quality and Burn Registry Committee.
Dr. Dominic and Dr. Higginson will work closely to ensure an optimal transition, and the continued development and growth of the Burn Center
The Department of Surgery would like to recognize and thank Dr. William Dominic for his outstanding tenure as Director of Burns. During this period, in addition to his burn, trauma, and critical care duties, Dr. Dominic served as Chairman of Quality Patient Safety Committee, the Sub-Specialty Chief of the CRMC Surgery Advisory Committee, member of the Multi-Specialty Peer Review Committee, and for seven years served on the board of directors of the Central California Blood Center. In addition to providing clinical training to fellows, residents, and medical students, for the last 15 years Dr. Dominic has also been actively involved with providing mentorship to high school students participating in the Doctors Academy and Volunteer Research programs. We will be forever grateful for Dr. Dominic’s passion to teach, his vision, and deep commitment to the Burns Center. After 30 years of dedication to the Burn Center, Dr. Dominic will transition to the position of Associate Director of Burns.
