In August 2009, LARCS was nominated to receive the 1st Annual Achievement Award, presented by the City of Fresno, DISABILITY ADVISORY COMMISSION.

The qualifications were:
Do you know of an individual, nonprofit organization or business that has significantly improved the quality of life for residents or visitors with disabilities in the City of Fresno? Do you feel they serve recognition for excellence in representing, collaborating with or serving people with disabilities?

Last night, LARCS CELEBRATED 65 Years. Quoting LARCS President Jan Zoller, " I wonder in 1957, if the eight passionate women dreamed the organization they were forming, LARCS, would celebrate 65 years of service and over $2,000,000.00 in donation to the community. That DREAM is a REALITY!!"

LARC Members, past and present, shared many memories, reminisced, cried and laughed.

65 Years of Enhancing the lives of individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities in our Fresno County Community.

Many of us here in Alabama know the story of Jake and Grace.
It's a beautiful story about grit and determination and love.
And now, another beautiful picture comes our way that illustrates their love for one another.

It was last night- on a glorious Friday evening- that Jake Pratt excitedly headed to Auburn University.
His girlfriend Grace Davis waited anxiously, as her sorority, AOII was holding its annual formal (months ago Grace was invited to be in the sorority as a full-fledged and active member).

Jake looked handsome in his silk shirt and pocket square.
Grace's perfect matching dress was resplendent.

And there they were, these natives of Vestavia Hills, Alabama.
Two beautiful young people in love, both with Down syndrome.

Grace is enjoying her time in the Eagles program at Auburn.
Jake is working at UPS in Homewood, AL after graduating from Life College at Clemson.

Two people with special needs graduating from high school, going to college, changing lives, dancing the night away.
Two people who could be poster models for what young people with special needs can become.

Is there an engagement in the future?
No word on that front yet, but keep it here.

Many of us here in Alabama know the story of Jake and Grace.

Let's let the world know, too.

*Thanks to Kathy Pratt for the picture.
