While Dr Mehdi Ghajar treats cataract, glaucoma, and corneal blindness at home, he is also committed to treating needy patients across the globe. Since 2009, he has partnered with Corneagen, a US based eyebank, Surgical Eye Expeditions, and local ophthalmologists in the Central Asian nation of Tajikistan in reversing corneal blindness. He carried donated corneas from Corneagen on ice & performs these sight restoring surgeries upon arrival. Tissue needs to be transplanted at most 12-14 days after the death of the kind donor & Dr Ghajar makes sure that the most needy and viable candidate patients are given these tissues. Dr Ghajar says he owes the greatest gratitude to the corneal donors & his host ophthalmologist colleagues in Tajikistan as well as to his mentors who trained him. He also owes a world of gratitude to his family and in laws who have always supported his work in Tajikistan.
