Left untreated, childhood trauma can reverberate through adult relationships and make it difficult for your client to get close to other people.
But Terry Real, MSW, LICSW has a way of thinking about the psyche that can help clients understand the aftereffects of trauma . . .
. . and help practitioners retarget their interventions with clients who are struggling in their relationships.
We’ve created an infographic to lay out his 3-part model for you below. Have a look.

What would you tell someone new to brain injury?
Now in my thirteenth as a brain injury survivor, I wish I had someone tell me more about what to expect when I was a "Brain Injury Newbie."
I had no idea what I was in for.
And my doctors? Suffice to say, I was told all kinds of erroneous things, some absolutely laughable, some pathetic, and some things that were just plain wrong.
Here’s what I would tell someone new to brain injury:
Brain injury sucks. It is the hardest thing you will ever go through. You will lose friends and family. Your sense of self will be shattered. You will feel “less than” those uninjured. You will feel permanently broken. You will feel hopeless. You will feel like there are times that it’s just not worth it – that humanity would be better off without you. You may contemplate su***de, thinking yourself to be a burden to those you love.
I would tell someone new that you will feel confused and bewildered – wondering what the heck happened to the life you used to have.
You will feel like it will never get better.
But I would also tell someone new that “it” does get better, thought I have yet to figure out what ‘it” is. Life will again become meaningful, though it will never be the same.
Those friends you lost? Take the time you need to mourn the loss. You deserve it. But they will be replaced over time, sometimes over the course of many years, with new friends – friends who know your challenges, and who love you unconditionally.
That feeling of hopelessness that you live with every day will become less burdensome. You will being to understand that YOU REALLY CAN DO IT.
Over time, deep within your Soul, you will come to realize that you are one badass survivor. You’ll look back and realize that you lived through days that might have taken out those with less strength.
I would tell someone new that you will learn life lessons that you could learn no other way. Your strengths come in your understanding of those who still suffer.
You (Yes you..) will regain the ability to look the world in the eye, knowing that you have survived the fires of pain, and have emerged with wisdom, compassion, and strength that you never knew you had. You will see that every tough day passes, and with that understanding, tougher days become a bit easier.
And if no one told you that you are going to be okay, let me be the first: You are going to be okay, though okay will be different now than it was before your injury.
So, your turn.
What would you tell someone new to brain injury?

Having a Brain Injury (it never ends...) by Linda W. Arms, June 22, 2014What is a brain injury like? It’s not like a broken leg. It’s not like most other medical conditions or diseases. It’s not getting old and experienci
Our lives are very much like a kaleidoscope with bits and pieces of broken things. There is still beauty in our lives even with those "broken" parts.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Give gratitude for the good things in your life. Appreciate them and be thankful. Keep these as snapshots in your mind.
Acknowledge the bad and broken. These make those good things that much sweeter.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I love some things I recently read online in someone's response to a question on Quora:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- Life is like a voyage and you are the sailor of your ship. In this way the quality, adventure, even destination depends on you and you only.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- You are given a choice... to live and let live, to make every moment of your life either worthwhile or worthless, to touch lives, to make memories, to bring in a whole lot of difference, to create history, to be anything and everything you want to be, and the list goes on....
What does the kaleidoscope of your life look like, and what makes it beautiful?
